How will Gramm's resignation affect McCain's campaign?

Former Texas senator Phil Gramm, who messed up Republican John McCain's economic message last week with his remarks about America suffering a "mental recession" and turning into a "nation of whiners," has left his official post in McCain's campaign.

Gramm has been a co-chairman, a top economic adviser and a spokesman for McCain on economics. Conservative columnist Robert Novak reported today that the pair had "patched up their relationship" and Gramm would continue as an adviser and surrogate, setting off a new round of Democratic attacks.

Update at 8:25 p.m. ET: This from Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugnan: "The question for John McCain isn’t whether Phil Gramm will continue as chairman of his campaign, but whether he will continue to keep the economic plan that Gramm authored and that represents a continuation of the policies that have failed American families for the last eight years."

Too little, too late.

McCain should have demand that he resign at the time that he said it.

After Gramm called this nation a nation of whiners, he became a non-issue to me.
