The tragic events in Florida point up again the fact that adverse events, whether weather related or manmade are an unavoidable part of life for individuals and communities. However, it is through planning, preparation, practice and unfortunately experience that the communities of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County turn tragedy into triumph with their rapid response, their professional caring and their ability to keep needs from exceeding resources, in short, they diverted large scale disaster.

To be certain, the severe weather and tornadoes that ravaged Lake, Brevard and Volusia County were tragedies on an individual and even local basis. Lives were lost. Homes destroyed. Businesses leveled. On the other hand, Lake, Brevard and Volusia County are served by some of the best first responders, search and rescue, emergency management and disaster response professionals in the State of Florida and in the nation. Storms have struck in the wee early morning hours and caused large swathes of devastation, these were answered by professionals who were on the road before daylight even broke. Within hours, the overall damages had been assessed. Urban search and rescue was on the job before the fog had even fully burnt off and had been stood down, having completed their task by 4:00 p.m.

To be sure, there will be an ongoing recovery efforts in Florida, but it is through planning and preparation that this community, vulnerable at a higher degree than most, due to the large number of manufactured homes and its own beautiful lake dotted landscape, completed its recovery phase in such a short time.

The disaster lifecycle consists of four phases:

* Interphase

* The Adverse Event

* The Response Phase

* The Recovery Phase

The interphase is that period beginning at the end of the previous recovery and continuing until the next adverse event. It is during this phase that planning, preparation, practice and review occur. Resources are amassed and professional community education are advanced. It is during the interphase that the ability to respond to the next adverse event is determined.

The adverse event is a discreet moment in time, when adversity strikes, but Lake, Brevard and Volusia County when severe storms and tornadoes represented a discreet moment when disaster responses began and damages were mitigated, but the adverse event itself could not be prevented. New early detection equipment and the newest of Doppler radars have afforded the people of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County a small but expanded window of time to see shelter and begin and activate their disaster plans. Less than a decade ago, the warnings would have been measured in minutes, now they are measured in minutes to hours.

The response phase begins at the moment that the adverse event strikes and continues until needs no longer exceed resources. Thanks to the dedicated professionals of Lake, Brevard Volusia County, excellent disaster planning, extensive disaster preparedness, adequate practice and unfortunately hard earned experience, the response in Florida was short lived. By sundown on the first day, the majority of the response phase has been completed and recovery has actually begun. The usual community or countywide disaster lasts three to seven days, before the response is completely shutdown and certainly the response in Lake County and Volusia County will continue in earnest for at least that long. However, most experts agree that recovery cannot begin in the first three days, yet Lake County and Volusia County were already calling in recovery professionals by midday on the first day of their response. Their recovery plans were already in full swing by nightfall.

Recovery begins with good planning and certainly this is an exampled of just such a recovery.

The people of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County, Florida, are to be admired for the professionalism, the bravery and the strength in which they have faced their most recent tragedies. While they suffered personal disasters, they staved off countywide and regional disaster and even communitywide catastrophe. They insured that resources exceeded needs and that the ability to respond was never lost.

On official appeared on television, shortly after the tragic event of the morning and asked that those listening on the radio and watching on television remember the people of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County in their prayers. I would add that we not only extend prayer, but congratulations and admiration to two counties and multiple communities that have learned the lesson that we all must learn: Plan, Prepare, Educate, Respond and Recover to Save Lives and Livelihoods.

How to Get Your Child Ready for Preschool : Communicating with Your Preschoolers Teacher

One of the key characteristics that successful people have is a winning mindset. They have learned over time to program their mind for success. That's what gives them the edge in competitive situations. This mindset allows them to hit the winning shot at the buzzer,sink the crucial putt on the 18th hole to win the tournament, or even purchase or sell their home! The question is why do some people have it and others don't? How can you ensure that you acquire the winning mindset? Let me take you through the development of a winning mindset.

1. Record and replay the tape: Now, I don't mean that you have to record yourself on a recorder. You do need to write down on paper (and track) your victories. We all have a lot of victories daily, weekly, and monthly. We just have a hard time remembering them. If we record them, we can review them during the challenges we are facing. When we lose our self-confidence, we can build it through reviewing our past victories. A lot of our victories, we will find, come out of a very challenging problem or struggle we are having. This review will also show us the direct correlation between the challenges we face and the victories we have. The key is to review them regularly. Review them, so you can invest them to pay dividends today, and tomorrow.

2. Understand the game you are playing: The highest peak performers understand the game they are playing- how to score and win. When I was younger, I played racquetball professionally. I always had a philosophy that if I finished second, it was the same as losing. I could have won all the other matches to the final, but losing the final was as bad as losing in the first round. For me, there was no second place. Business is the same way. Have you ever gotten paid for coming in second? Second place does not make the mortgage payment. Make sure you are playing to win. Understand the reality of the business that you are in. Develop the focus that you need to compete at the highest level.

3. The secret edge: Believe in yourself. The best of the best in life believe in themselves. Michael Jordan believed to his core that he was the best. His belief, and his sheer will to win, created the best basketball player ever. I read an article about a survey in which professional golfers were asked, "If you had one putt to win a major championship, who would you pick to putt it?" Almost all of them chose Jack Nickalaus. Why, because he knew he was the best and had the ability to will the ball into the hole. When I sold real estate, I truly believed I was the best Agent for the job. That belief extended beyond just my market place. The question is what do you believe? When your confidence goes up, your competence goes up at the same time. Program your mind, through affirmations, that you are the best. Say aloud daily: "I am a great business person", "I am the best that someone can hire to do the job", "I provide exceptional service to my clients." You must drive your belief deep. It truly is the secret weapon for all peak performers.

We must invest time daily to develop the winning mindset. Take the time to record your victories. Review them daily, weekly, and monthly. Work to improve your belief in yourself. We all came from the same creator. He didn't create any junk. You have it inside you to be exceptional. The secret edge is belief.

Norman Vincent Peale said, "Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities. Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful or happy. Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind . . . a mental picture of yourself succeeding. Hold the picture tenaciously; never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture."

Trust is the state of readiness for unguarded interaction with someone or something. Trust is built and maintained by many small actions over time. Trust is telling the truth, even when it is difficult, and being honest, authentic, and reliable in your dealings with customers and employees. Trust exists on many levels in an organization: with the direct manager, with the leadership, with the team and with the company.

Times are tough and you can't afford not to have it today, but you will find that it is harder than ever to build and maintain. Employees are increasingly skeptical and daily exposés about 'leaders' who clearly are not trustworthy only makes it tougher.

Individuals must have a capacity for trust based on his/her experiences (with the current manager and company as well as with previous employers). The experiences we each have develop or diminish the capacity and willingness to risk trusting others. In the current business environment, there is a continuing decline of trust in companies and leadership overall. Employees watch the news, hear stories and wonder constantly if "it" (being laid off, denied a promotion or raise, having their project stopped, shutting down the company, etc.) is going to happen to them.

Individuals must perceive and believe in the ability of others they work with to perform competently at whatever is needed. During tough times, this belief in others tends to erode especially when communications are lacking concerning how changes impact the organization and success. Couple that with the increasing amount of communication about all the problems in the economy and you quickly have a lopsided equation with the negative far outweighing the positive. Employees are deeply concerned about who is going to be the next company or 'leader' exposed in some sort of scandal or unethical behavior.

Lastly, but incredibly important to trust, is a belief that the actions, words, direction, mission, and/or decisions are motivated by mutually-serving rather than self-serving motives. Employees have to know you care about them and are considering their best interests as well as the company's. During tough times, there is an even greater likelihood that employees will fill in the blanks with negative intentions if they are not getting constant communication about what is going on, how the company will still win and what is in it for them to stay, work hard and remain productivity. In almost every breakroom around the country today, employees are wondering how some leaders and senior managers are asking for and getting multi-million dollar bonuses as they are laying off employees and their businesses are failing by every measure. What kind of beliefs does an individual have to justify that sort of behavior and why would you expect me to believe they will ever consider my interests?

There are critical leadership & management behaviors to build and grow trust in today's environment:

Act with integrity - Consistently conduct yourself in an honest and trustworthy manner; treat people with respect and dignity; keep your word; remain approachable; set an example for others to follow; protect the interest of all employees; do the right thing for the organization.

Be teamwork oriented - Demonstrate co-operation and trust with colleagues across organizational boundaries; establish strong working relationships to deliver positive results; help to create and maintain a strong feeling of belonging in the team; share expertise, successes, and relevant information with others; identify barriers to teamwork and work with others to overcome them.

Listen- Attend to and convey understanding of the comments and questions of others; remain genuinely interested in what others have to say; suspend your own assumptions and consider various beliefs; have patience to wait for people to finish.

Provide ongoing feedback - Objectively observe, analyze, and share perceptions of other people's performance to reinforce or redirect behavior to improve performance and business results; provide feedback that is timely, specific, behavioral, balanced, and constructive; realign people/teams quickly; set clear and high expectations and act as if employees are capable of living up to them.

Strive for results - Hold yourself accountable for results and focus on instilling that same attitude and level of action in others; act to realize ever-increasing levels of excellence; seize opportunities as they arise; take ownership for resolving difficult situations; refrain from thinking it can't be done and focus on how to make it happen.

Focus & prioritize - Determine priorities and give full attention to what is most important; set trivial tasks aside; know what to accomplish on your own and when to involve and delegate to others.

Be self aware - Set high personal standards; know your own strengths and development needs; ask for ongoing feedback and coaching; be willing to admit to and learn from mistakes.

Motivate others positively - Create a climate where people want to do their best; let employees know how important they are to the business; empower others by sharing ownership and visibility; recognize and constantly communicate effectively with others on what it will take to get to the next stage.

Communicate effectively - Communicate constantly and cascade key messages throughout the organization. Communicating includes telling employees where they stand, how the business is doing and what future plans are. Other key messages should include what is staying the same (what can provide a sense of comfort) and why you will still win despite everything else going on in the world. The more transparent you can become, the better. With the increase in social media, transparency in business is expected. Secrecy breeds suspicion. Whenever information is kept close, both the intent and the actual content become open to misinterpretation. Provide as much information as you can comfortably divulge as soon as possible in any situation.

It won't be easy to recover and rebuild trust in many organizations. Great leaders and managers can do it, but employee skepticism is justifiably at all time high. Are you doing the right things?

Does anyone know how an adult with only a 7th grade education, enrolling in a free virtual school?

The Truth is he was removed from the public school system in Florida to be home-schooled my grade 8. It was a program offered by the school. In a way a staff member had accidentally deleted my files Rookie of my performance, she had never existed in this school. My mother tried to register again in the public school, but do not leave school with my statements notes have been removed. So I really only have a quality education seventh would go back to school ... preferably a virtual school on the center line of a species if there is no such thing. I am 28 and live in Georgia now, if makes a difference.

If you look online, with virtual schools in Ga, but I doubt that would be free at your age .. is generally free if your under 21 ... But I'm not sure ... you must face.

I'M COLOR BLIND! (5.3.10 - Day 368)

Having fun is the ultimate cherry on the pie - it makes everything, including language learning, an entirely different experience. You get the impression the materials are simpler, there's less effort involved, the productivity skyrockets, and time flies by at an otherworldly speed. So why not enjoy the magic process of gaining linguistic knowledge, starting today?

Here are 5 ideas to introduce fun to your language learning:

1. Set an intention to spend a day thinking in your target language.

If you're learning more than one foreign language, dedicate at least a day a month to think in each of them! It's like gifting yourself with a home-made total immersion program that will sharpen your awareness and re-enforce your linguistic self-confidence. It's an excellent exercise to enrich your vocabulary. And, you'll most probably realize you're perfectly able to express many more thoughts in your target language than you gave yourself credit for.

2. Master the vocabulary that's relevant to you.

There's no point to learn technical expressions from a field you're not even familiar with in your native tongue before mastering the vocabulary that's relevant and important to your life, business and any specific reason you're learning a foreign language in the first place. Focus on the most pressing linguistic needs, and you'll be able to start using your knowledge right away. Your motivation will reach new heights and you'll be newly energized to take on new linguistic challenges.

3. Play the »copy-paste-memorize« game.

If you're bored by the usual language learning methods, use some imagination and try something new. Gather some online and offline materials on topics that you enjoy reading about, and copy sentences, idioms, word phrases, words that catch your eye. Organize the new vocabulary in a creative way - it will be easier to memorize it - and add your own examples of its usage as well. With the help of dictionaries, figure out all the different ways to employ those expressions. It doesn't have to take long. If you're time-challenged, you can set a timer so you don't get carried away.

4. Get in a competition.

Feeling lonely in your language learning efforts? With too little accountability to really care about your immediate results? Think about pairing up with a friend in a similar situation, and start a »competition« that will stimulate you both to achieve more in less time. Since it's up to you two to set up the rules, you can make the game as fun as it can get. In this case, what would happen if there was a law requiring terminally sick people to be euthanized if they are suffering. Would you be happy living with such a law?
