Reporting Shift- Teacher Pay Cuts

Two popular practical subjects are home economics and woodwork - but they don't necessarily mean that you need to apply for a job in the food or woodworking industries. Read on to find out more.

Home economics is the area of study that deals with the economics and the management of the home and also the community. It covers many different areas such as; sewing, cooking, nutrition, hygiene, interior design and cleaning. Although the curriculum is constantly changing, home economics has remained a constant, hence showing that it is an important part of the curriculum.

In the UK it is most commonly taught during secondary school as a compulsory subject. It can also then be studied higher as a GCSE and as an A Level. Although many would think that this would be a subject commonly studied by girls, this is no longer true. As roles are being reversed in households more and more boys are also deciding that home economics is a positive choice for them.

By studying home economics it allows you to learn the basic skills that may not be taught at home any more, due to the parents being busy at work. It provides the basic cooking and cleaning skills so that children are able to do so for themselves at home.

It may also mean that students particularly enjoy one element of home economics and decide to study it further at university. For example, a student could decide to study interior design or a specific degree tailored to diet and nutrition.

It may also mean that a career choice is made after studying home economics. They may decide to train to become a chef or a fashion designer. It is a very good subject choice that can lead to many different careers and possibilities, not just within the food industry.

Furniture is all around us, it's something that is always there; be it in a school, hotel or our own homes. Years ago it was quite common for well made furniture to be passed down through generations, now however most people tend to buy their own expensive furniture. If you study further than what you are taught at school you may soon be able to produce your very own furniture for a fraction of the cost.

Woodwork is a topic that is taught in most secondary schools as part of a compulsory subject. Whilst studying this subject you will also study home economics and textiles. Each of these teaches you key skills that you can use throughout your life.

Being sufficiently competent at woodwork means that you will be able to confidently undertake all those DIY tasks in the home later in life with ease! You should also be able to build on your skills and maybe build or make objects of your own such as shelving or tables.

If you particularly enjoyed woodwork at school you could develop this skill further by undertaking a woodwork course offered by external providers. You may wish to pursue this as a career choice by becoming a carpenter. You may choose to also undertake this as a hobby, and several providers offer a range of courses you can complete whilst on a short break in a nice place in the country.

That's right. Barack Obama's hero, Abraham Lincoln, was a Republican. Lincoln wasn't just any ole Republican either. He was among the founders of the Republican Party and was the first Republican to be elected President.

The Republican Party was founded in 1854 in Ripon, Wisconsin. Its principal goal was to stop the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Lincoln had been involved with the Whig Party, which was disintegrating due, in large part, to sectional rivalries. Since Lincoln was personally opposed to slavery, he found the Republican Party platform much to his liking.

The first Republican to run for President was John C. Fremont, and that was in 1856. But Fremont's appeal was largely regional, and he was defeated by James Buchanan. By 1860, however, things would be different.

Before Lincoln ran for President in 1860, he campaigned in his home state of Illinois for the US Senate. Back then, senators were chosen by their state legislatures. Lincoln was the Republican nominee for Senate, but since the Republican Party was so new, he lost. Nevertheless, the series of debates Lincoln had with Democratic Party opponent Stephen Douglas aroused great interest in the country.

Lincoln followed by his Senate campaign with a series of pamphlets and speeches that captured the nation's attention. He became one of the leading voices against the expansion of slavery, and, in 1860, emerged as the Republican nominee for President.

While the appeal of the Republican Party was still regional (at the time, the Northeast), the entire nation was split regionally at this point. There were, in fact, four candidates for President that year, including Lincoln's former Senate campaign rival, Stephen Douglas. None of the candidates received a majority of the popular vote, but the population advantage in the Northeast gave Lincoln an Electoral College majority - making him the 16th President of the United States and the first President to be a Republican.

What sites are the most popular - most viewed - most read blogging sites on the internet and world wide web?
I think Google's "Blogger" is one of them and I think I know of another one or 2 that might be popular and heavily visited however I'm not completely sure of these. There is many deep issues I wish to discuss with people at these communities relating to economics, politics, health care, justice amongst other thingst things in a deeper context. Sometime in the 1980s, I read a book written by Manfred Kets de Vries who claimed to have found six types of corporate cultures. The most intriguing thesis of the book was that actually most organizations are not sick, but not entirely healthy: the so-called lingering organizations. The other five types of organizations are: the dramatic organization, the depressive organization, the paranoid organization, the coercive organization, and the schizophrenic organization.

The dramatic organization is hyperactive, impulsive, very adventurous and dangerously unrestrained. The decision-makers base their ideas on intuition and impressions instead of facts. The leaders use their charisma to concentrate all the power in the top. They can therefore undertake very risky operations. They do these things to create a completely different environment without really considering the existing business environment. Their goal is unlimited growth. The man in the top wants to be the center of everything. He wants to show what a good leader he is. Without really considering the reality, this kind of behavior can easily result in great disasters.

The depressive organization is characterized by apathy, lack of self-confidence and conservatism. The communication climate is passive and aimless. The activities are implemented according to predetermined programs and routines. The employees are never asked to show initiative. In stable markets, long established companies can withstand many crises despite their depressive state. They can survive as long as the technology and the competitive pattern remain the same. The environment of these organizations is usually protected with trade agreements and fixed tariffs.

The paranoid organization is characterized by extreme suspicion at the top. This is mirrored by the extreme emphasis on procedures which are aimed to collect information and exert control. A complex information system is created to analyze all the dangers of the outside world. Procedures are written down in detailed manner and everybody is obliged to continuously write reports. This need to regulate everything and be alert all the time results in 'the institutionalization of suspicion'. There are a lot of meetings to collect the same information from different people. The advantage is that the leaders will get the right information, but the side effect is that mutual trust is diminishing. A lot of precious time and energy is lost while the morale is decreasing all the time.

The coercive organization is addicted to rituals. Every move is literally planned. The implementation of the plans is carefully monitored; all activities are usually routine activities. The emphasis is laid on correctness and completeness when the predetermined methods are used. Rituals have become norms. Just like in the paranoid organization, the coercive organization depends on formal control and information systems. There is, however, one important difference; coercive organizations are really meant for monitoring budgets and productivity. The paranoid organization on the other hand, is mainly interested in things which lie outside its span of control.

Like the depressed organization, the schizophrenic organization is suffering from lack of effective leadership. The leaders of a schizophrenic organization are not doing a good job. They are afraid to establish new contacts because they had bad experiences in the past. These leaders have reached a stage in their career in which they are not interested in leading anymore. If they are lucky, this problem is solved by the middle managers, but these middle managers are usually only interested in their own interests. The average middle manager will usually become servants who just want to win the favors of their directors. The directors are constantly in doubt, because they don't know which proposals to accept from their subordinates. A consequence is that plans are implemented half-heartedly and actions depend on the mood of the day. Lack of consistent and consequent leadership is the most important characteristic of the schizophrenic organization.

The lingering organizations, finally, usually have problems with the central values, norms, and beliefs. If the leaders are not trying to disseminate these aspects or are even against it, subcultures will be created which are not independent. Other characteristics of lingering organizations are: internal company politics is more important than efficiency, promises and deals are oftentimes neglected and the leaders are not really interested of their employees.

So, what are then the characteristics of truly healthy organizations? Here are ten parameters of good corporate culture:

1. Pride of the organization:

Employees defend their company against unjustified critique and they say that they like working for their company;

2. Orientation towards (top) achievements:

'In our company, everybody tries to do a better job' and 'our company is number one and that should stay so';

3. Teamwork and communication:

Employees listen well and try to understand the ideas/opinions of others and employees and managers really try to help each other;

4. Supervision and leadership:

Managers are really interested in the problems of others and it is customary to ask help when needed;

5. Profit orientation and cost awareness:

All expenditures are evaluated if they are effective or not and all members are strongly thinking about profit;

6. Employee relationships:

Employees are not trying to better themselves from the mistakes of other employees and new employees are accepted quickly;

7. Client and consumer relations:

Everything is oriented towards a better service for the customer;

8. Honesty and safety:

Safety rules are strictly implemented and everybody sees company properties as being sacred;

9. Education and development:

Everybody supports education and training programs and the company really tries to develop its employees

10. Innovation:

Systems and procedures are constantly being pursued and new ideas are always welcome.

This is an article about a craft in which I became interested by chance (if there is such a thing) and which changed the way I spent my leisure time ever afterwards. This craft showed me the way to many different offshoots, and eventually led me to set up my own business, selling my own designs.

Patchwork is often thought of as an American craft, but in fact the American pioneer women took their patchwork with them from their home countries, especially England. Much patchwork consists of geometric designs made up in cotton fabrics, but there are other types such as crazy patchwork, which is irregular shapes made up in satins, velvets and other fancy fabrics, and appliqué, which literally means applied work, where a shape, such as an apple or teddy bear made up of one fabric is applied or sewn to another fabric.

When I first became interested in patchwork and quilting some years ago, I didn't know much about it. Actually, I knew nothing. Even though I had been sewing most of my life, I had never tackled patchwork and quilting, or even thought about them. They were something that was done in America, I thought.

So when I was running a crèche which was attached to a Community House, I was merely interested when mothers collecting their children had half-finished quilts in their enormous bags. Apparently one of the classes being held was Patchwork and Quilting.

After I walked down the hall to take a look at the class, talked to participants, and - most of all - touched the quilts, I was hooked. As I was working in the crèche, I couldn't go to the class, so I went to the newsagents, bought a magazine and wanted to dive straight in. I've always been able to learn practical skills from reading about them.

But what was all this? I had to decide which type of quilt first. Pieced patchwork, crazy patchwork, appliqué. Wholecloth quilts. Geometric designs - scary, all that measuring; numbers have never been my strength. Applique - easier, more margin for error, but can I draw, or am I doomed to trace somebody else's designs, which are never quite what I want. Crazy patchwork - love the look, but all those raw edges - what if they fray.

The batting - which I'd never even heard of before - all these different types! Cotton, wool, polyester, innumerable blends of these - one book says natural only; another says use any - yes, I quickly resorted to the public library and took home a stack of books on all aspects of patchwork and quilting.

And the quilting itself - apparently you either had to quickly master tiny running stitches (running stitches, like we learned at our mother's knee - or was it in primary school) - sounds too simple, yet every book tells the same story here. Oh yes, or you can machine-quilt. Now we're back to choices. Use a walking foot (huh?) or a darning foot for free-motion quilting - sounds a bit professional for a beginner ...

Yes, you've guessed it. I eventually tackled everything I've mentioned and more besides. I'm better at some things than at others of course, but I'm quite good at most. It's taken some years of practice and a great deal of pleasure, but I can say that I'm a quilter ... amongst other textile crafts ... but that's another story.

Could you recommend a good tree nursery in southern Miami?

Hi, I moved to Miami with my 2 years and her husband, who work Miami Beach. I would like to find a rental apartment or a house near the daycare and preschools for our daughter ... but have not found yet a good school. I will work at home for me to travel a problem, but ideally we do not want a long journey for my husband not more. Can anyone help me with 1) finding quality child care (care to education through art and craft of music and preferably an organic / natural home farm / food) and 2) a good neighborhood for children and a growing family. In the quest to attract wealth, many people will have to undergo serious changes. After all, if we find ourselves in a less than desirable state financially, mentally, and spiritually, we are clearly doing something wrong and will need to change so our situations can change. The concepts of law of attraction, wealth consciousness, and deliberate intention are quite simple. The hard part is finding the discipline to change our woeful ways.

However, without discipline, we will remain exactly where we are. Though many people find themselves saying they want to change one thing or another about their circumstances or themselves, most people really do not take it much further than that. We look at our personality defects like they are as unchangeable as our skin color. We look at our circumstances and conclude that this is just how it is. We blame outside circumstances and everything else outside ourselves and this allows us to avoid responsibility. Everything I will ever write on these matters is based on my own personal experience and I can assure you that you can create whatever life you want for yourself and you can become whatever person you want to be. You can attract wealth and whatever else you want into your experience if you employ the discipline necessary to make the needed changes in your habits, beliefs, and actions.

This lack of discipline is a major reason why people never get the results they want or get them on severe delay. One might read a great book or hear a great lecture or CD with tons of great information that provides not only inspiration but practical steps to reach the goal. We get excited and feel great for a couple of days, feeling that we can finally liberate ourselves from our unhappy circumstances.

We vow to make our list of desires, meditate daily, make conscious effort to monitor our thoughts, stop generating negativity by gossiping and judging others and a whole host of other things that will help us make lasting and positive change in our lives. However, shortly after this epiphany, we are back to watching mindless television 8 hours a day, talking about how ugly our neighbor's haircut is, and letting our minds run on complete auto-pilot that is chock full of thoughts of worry, anxiety, doubt and fear.

I am not going to lie. The inner work needed to truly live as you desire can be quite challenging but I cannot think of a better goal to achieve in life than finding true prosperity and happiness. It is challenging because for most of our lives we are fed lots of information that is full of negativity, lack, limitation. In addition, we are given information about money that is very detrimental to our happiness.

Can money alone make you happy? Of course not. However, money can give options and freedom and in the hands of a right minded person, can do wonderful things in this world. You can be spiritual and rich. You can earn money honestly and by doing things you love. You can be nice and have money. It takes a lot of discipline to reprogram our beliefs about what is possible in life, money, and the power of the mind. If you are not willing to commit yourself to serious change, you will be doing yourself a great disservice. A better life is possible for anyone who is willing to commit to the journey. If you desire to attract wealth so you can live your life to the fullest, start now and promise yourself you will see it through. I promise that you will get everything you are looking for.

Should I get a master's or graduate degree-post?

I am interested in getting into public service. There are several programs Masters here in Toronto to provide an education in the field, but I also learned that Humber College offers a very convenient based on three semesters which enables graduates to become program officers, policy analysts, etc. I would like to become a political analyst of choice, but I would like some upward mobility at my disposal. Humber is very attractive, but maybe you should stick with a master? It's just a theory well and did a lot of theory in my student years. Should I continue Humber to improve job skills or pursue a master?
