I graduated from college with a 2.01 GPA, and now I want to get a Masters. What online schools will accept me?

I graduated from the University of Rhode Island and earned my BA in Economics. Now I'm looking to take some online courses to get my Masters Degree in Economics. However, all the popular online colleges (University of Phoenix, Kaplan University, etc.) all state on their website that a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required to enroll. So I need to know, can I really not get accepted to these programs with a 2.01 GPA? And if so, what accredited online universities will accept me with a 2.01 GPA? I would appreciate any information. Math rules, and everything else drools. Well maybe not everything, but the truth is that math really is the king of subjects to study. For ultimately every subject in school--indeed everything--revolves around math. Even subjects that you would never think. Like English, for example. How so? you say.

Well for instance, take poetry. Poetry has meter, which in essence is the way a poem is structured as to the flow of the syllables. The sonnet is a type of poem consisting of four stanzas: three of which contain four lines, and the last containing two lines. Indeed, math can be found in the sonnet as well as in many other least expected places.

You see the sonnet has a meter which is known as iambic pentameter. Pentameter refers to the number of feet a line contains, a foot being a number of syllables of words. Iambic refers to the number of syllables and the stress pattern associated with those syllables: the iamb is a foot of two syllables, an unstressed followed by a stressed. Thus a line of iambic pentameter contains ten syllables, and these are such that the pattern is unstressed followed by stressed. This is illustrated by the following: daDUM daDUM daDUM daDUM daDUM. An example of some lines of iambic pentameter would be the following taken from Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare:

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate.

So what the heck does poetry, iambic pentameter, or the like have to do with math? Before you go off and get ready to commit me, give me a chance to explain. The point of this article is to show that if we look (and admittedly we sometimes have to look hard, but often times we really don't), we will see relationships and tie-ins between an abstract discipline like mathematics and other seemingly unrelated fields--like poetry, to wit. You see, we can think of a line of iambic pentameter--the key meter of any sonnet--as being composed of a string of 0's and 1's, in which the 0's represent the unstressed syllables and the 1's represent the stressed syllables. Thus the daDUM's above become 01's, and a line of iambic pentameter becomes 01 01 01 01 01. For those of you who recognize this pattern, you notice that we have converted the meter of the sonnet into a binary pattern of digits. By converting the sonnet into this binary pattern, we can spot instantly whether each line of a sonnet fits rigorously into the iambic structure or not. For any line that does not alternate between 0's and 1's, with five of each in each line, would technically fall outside this structure.

Indeed many lines of many sonnets fall outside this structure. Just read the sonnets of Shakespeare or Emily Dickinson, for that matter. However, this structure is followed as a guiding principle. Deviations occur for the sake of expression and also because deviations sometimes...are good.

So here we have discovered a weird connection between binary digits and--of all things--poetry. Imagine how many other things we could discover if we just used a little imagination. For this reason, I say without reservation that math indeed rules and everything else, kind of drivels. And for those of you who realized while reading this that those binary digits are what form the foundation for computer technology--yes that's right, the computer would not be if man did not harness the power of those little seemingly insignificant 0's and 1's--take a bow.

Yes. Math rules. And by the way, why don't you chew on this binary digit stuff while you figure out a way how to make more money with Google's Adsense Program. Just a kidding thought. Till next time...

Introduction

In this critique of Women In The Middle Ages, I will identify the Gies' purpose in writing this book and discuss how well they fulfilled their purpose. Also I will evaluate the merits and shortcomings of this book in relation to the themes, sources used, and the authors' writing style.

Authors' Purpose

The Gies assert that researching and writing about women in the Middle Ages is difficult, due to the sources that are commonly used and which gives a misogynic view of women, such as the writings of Church fathers, contemporary law books, and literary works. The Gies attempt to describe the lives of women in the thousand years known as the early Middle Ages, Dark Ages, and High Middle Ages.

The first section of the book offers background information on the lives of women in the early Middle Ages, and the last section are individual portraits of specific women in the High Middle Ages. The Gies explore several elements that affect women's lives: childbirth, survival, marriage, property rights, legal rights, education, work, political roles, and religious roles.

Authors' Writing Style

Despite the difficulties in writing about medieval women, the Gies do an excellent job of providing the reader with an extended, if not complete, view of the lives of these women. They must necessarily fill in some blanks that history has left us, but the majority of their conclusions seem very logical and believable. For instance, the pervasive belief that women had few legal rights is shown to be not strictly true in the descriptions of the woman who disinherited her son in favor of a kinswoman (21) and other examples of women maintaining control over their own property.

The manner in which the Gies trace the fluctuating status of women in the Middle Ages is seen to be directly connected to politics, economics, and changing social structure. For example, the introduction of the feudal system in ninth century France and, subsequently, other European countries, traces how women's rights and status diminished due to the linking of land ownership to military service.

The Gies' style of writing is clear, informative, and extremely interesting. I enjoyed very much how they presented the age old myths surrounding women, and in some instances, modifying them to reflect their actual historical elements. For example, the chapter entitled "Eve and Mary" describes the tendency on the part of males that "simultaneously placed woman on a pedestal and reviled her as the incarnation of evil" (37). This is important because it still affects the modern world.

The Gies also present evidence that shows the conflicting attitudes towards women that men held. An early medieval churchman Tertullian thought of his wife as his "beloved companion in the Lord's service" while preaching to women that they were the "gate of the devil," "traitor of the tree," and the "first deserter of Divine Law" (38).

While most of the conclusions reached by the Gies seem valid and logical, there is one that I cannot agree with. Regarding Blanche of Castile, the Gies write that "Blanche had never really exhibited a taste for power" (119). I believe that Blanche, once having obtained power, was clearly determined to retain it. The evidence of her possessiveness towards her son King Louis and her attempts to reduce his wife's influence over him demonstrates that Blanche was endeavoring to hold on to her political authority she had held as her son's regent.

Authors' Sources

The Gies used primary sources for the most part in writing their book. These sources are principally "chronicles, tax rolls, legal and manorial records, private account books, diaries, and letters" (5). They did use a few secondary sources, such as works by Frederick Engles, Jill Tweedie, and Marc Bloch. They seemed to draw much of their material from religious works, such as the Bible, and works by St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, and St. Bernadine of Siena.

Conclusion

This was an excellent book to use for studying the lives of medieval women. Despite how much modern scholarship has advanced in presenting women, it still remains inadequate in traditional history texts. So therefore, supplements are necessary and this one provides an in-depth view of medieval women of all classes. I enjoyed this book very much and the primary reason is that it showed me just exactly how far women have advanced in modern society. Some of the evidence presented by the Gies was frankly shocking, such as the view that menstrual fluid was poisonous and that women were forced to walk the fields as a human insecticide.

Obviously, if you have children and you wish to move to Spain, then the schooling of your children will be your most important priority.

In fact, the overall welfare of your children will probably be the deciding factor as to whether any move to Spain is actually possible and their educational needs may define where you live. Certainly it is true to say that the happiness of your children in Spain will be critical to the success of your relocation. If children are unhappy then this can place tremendous stress upon the adults within a family - to the point at which it can strain a previously good working relationship.

Fortunately, education in Spain is good, albeit that (like the UK) considerable care is required if you are to obtain the best possible results. Of course, the big difference in Spain for a child is that they will be taught in Spanish (and sometimes in a regional dialect, such as Valenciano). As few North European children speak Spanish, it makes their entry into the Spanish schools system sensitive and it can mean that it takes a while for your child to settle. That said, it is extraordinary how fast children pick up a new language and I have only ever known one child unable to learn Spanish.

Of course, timing has a huge part to play when it comes to placing a child into normal (not international) Spanish schools. Without doubt, the younger a child the easier it is for them to assimilate Spanish and to therefore get to grips with education in Spain and the academic work itself. A far greater problem is faced by older children and experience has shown that there is an age at which children find it, to all intents and purposes, impossible to both learn a new language and deal with the demands of increasingly complicated academic work. In essence, the danger time for moving a child into Spanish schools (if they speak no Spanish) is when they are around 12 - 13 years old. Earlier than that and most children will easily learn the language and be able to catch up with the academic work. Older, and it will become difficult (to impossible), for them to keep up with their peers - and not to be able to do so will be demoralising and damaging during a vulnerable time of their lives.

Education in Spain for children is compulsory from the ages of 6 to 16, with primary education lasting 6 years - followed by four years of compulsory secondary education at the end of which a Certificate of Education is received. State Spanish schools are free and normally school uniform is not worn. However, the purchase of school books is the responsibility of parents and can be quite costly (around 300 Euros per child per year). After the age of 16, children can continue with their education in Spain and go to vocational institutes or study for the academically demanding (and highly regarded) Bachillerato. The latter takes two years and is needed should a child wish to attend university.

State schools tend to be as variable as in the UK and much depends upon the precise intake area. It is therefore always wise to check very carefully the reputation of what may become your local Spanish school. Of course, there are private Spanish schools which can often be a very wise choice. These can provide a superb education in Spain within environments that are controlled, safe and that have high aspirations for their students. They provide terrific value for money compared to the cost of their UK (for example) counterparts and, if you can afford it, are well worth using for your children. Fees (2008) vary considerably but can be around 350 euros per month (10 months).

Equally, Spain has a scattering of international schools which provide, in English, a British curriculum. Oddly enough, these Spanish schools frequently have a high proportion of Spanish children, as the wealthy Spanish have a strong urge to ensure that their children are completely fluent in Spanish. They are particularly pertinant if you wish to move to Spain and your children are over the age of 12. As a parent with two children, I have been very impressed by the standard of education in Spain - and my son now is attending university having passed the Bachillerato. This has been a tremendous success (he started Spanish schooling when he was 13) and proof that the existing system of education in Spain works for foreigners!

Writing is an activity that has a sequence of logically well constructed sentences dedicated towards representing in essence the viewpoint of an individual. There are many simple factors that are considered when choosing the appropriate topics for essay. The style and the structure of an essay depend on the specific type of essay that you are writing on but the basic construction of an essay remains the same almost everywhere. When choosing a topic for essay keep in mind that you consider your level of knowledge and experience on the topic.

* Identifying what exactly wastes your time: There are many things and ways that can waste your productive time, like loosing things, unnecessary chatting, repeated interruptions in the work, telephonic conversations, putting off things, real time crises, junk paperwork, distractions and an excessive urge for perfection. Once you identify what exactly causes you loosing your precious time, then it is possible to weed those factors off from your daily schedules.

Here are some questions that can be included in your questionnaire:

* What proportion or percentage of my tasks and items were planned?

* Was there any well defined schedule for my day?

* Did planned tasks and assignments take much longer than what was expected?

* Did I spend my precious time on low value jobs?

* Were there any interruptions to my work?

* What was the most productive phase of my day?

* Did I act as, if I was very busy?

* Did I have control over my time?

* How effective was me, for the day? On a grading scale, was my day OK?

Once you have prepared this questionnaire, you'll need to honestly answer them with out any delay. Time management self assessment will be practical and feasible only, if you're honest to yourself and to your self conscience. Write down answers to all the questions with out leaving or omitting anything.

Once you understand your drawbacks and weaknesses, now is the time to study and understand the basic fundamentals of time management. There are several great books and articles on time management techniques. Apart from these general resources, you can also choose to attend time management seminars and workshops. The biggest advantage of attending such seminars and workshops is that you can again create a time management self assessment list by, either listening to great speeches in person or though CD's.

This is a continuing process and it will never end. You can always improvise your time management techniques, as and when you hone your management techniques and skills. There are always plenty of opportunities and chances for further improvisation in your time management skills.

SPSS and questionnaire funneling?

Hi, I'm using SPSS to process some data for my research. The questionnaire I used employed funneling: depending on the answer to a question it would direct the respondent to different parts.

I think the standard practice in this kind of situation is to have (at least) two separate missing value codes, like "NA" for questions that are skipped via your funneling procedure and just "missing" for questions where they refused to answer or whatever.

There's no disadvantage to having everything in a single data file, because it's fairly easy to filter cases to temporarily break them down into groups if any situation were to come up where you really did want to look exclusively at respondents with valid answers to particular questions.
