I have had several questions lately about the responsibilities of Boards of Directors and whether there are ways to assess and improve Board effectiveness. In fact, Board effectiveness is one of the most important best practices an organization can undertake; just because a group of people have come together with a common purpose, often with community involvement and altruism in their minds and hearts, does not mean a Board of Directors will automatically run smoothly. In fact, any time you bring human beings together as a team means there will be sticky issues and competing interests and attitudes. Just like the teams working in an organization, Boards of Directors must be nurtured if they are to run smoothly.

What is a Board of Directors?

Boards of Directors have many responsibilities and obligations. They are not typically part of an organization's daily management, but they are the highest management tier of an organization and oversee all activities from a governance standpoint. The chief purpose of a Board is to ensure that activities are conducted in the best interests of stakeholders, including the public and clients in not-for-profit organizations.

What does a Board do?

Although Boards can vary widely in their approach and policies around their responsibilities, they typically have 6 main functions, briefly:

1) Finance/Resource Management: Board responsibilities typically include overseeing the organization's financial situation including the budget, in order to ensure stability and viability. This can also include ensuring that the organization has adequate resources and ensuring effective resource management. And in not-for-profit organizations it can even mean actually engaging in fundraising and developing fundraising principles and strategies.

2) Organizational Culture and Effectiveness: A Board must ensure the organization is performing as effectively as it can. A Board must also keep a finger on the culture of the organization and ensure that it is kept in line with organizational values and ideals. This includes, but is even more broad than HR, succession planning, and talent management. It is tied to achieving the organization's mission and upholding its core values. Furthermore, Boards of Directors are typically governance-based as opposed to operations-based. This means that while they keep a finger on the culture of the organization, they do not 'interfere' in organizational operations unless it is specifically their mandate to do so (or their Executive Director/ CEO / President is unfortunately not doing this effectively).

3) Management of the CEO: Boards of Directors typically have an HR responsibility only in terms of the top executive, not other employees. This includes recruiting, hiring, and managing the CEO's performance. The Board of Directors employs the CEO and is responsible for his or her performance and development. The relationship between the Board and CEO is an important one, and the CEO is typically an ex officio member of the Board with slightly different voting privileges.

4) Strategic Planning and Growth: A Board of Directors must participate in, oversee, and to some extent drive strategic organizational development, whether this means growth or something else.

5) Stewardship and Advocacy: The Board is responsible for advocating for the organization and communicating with the public. This responsibility may be shared with others in the organization such as the CEO, but it is a major Board function.

6) Board Effectiveness: Often forgotten in descriptions of Board responsibilities, Boards of Directors must engage in self-management, actively building and maintaining an effective Board of Directors, something that may be implicit in its policies, but can be taken for granted. This means developing and maintaining a Board profile that is suitable to the organization, ensuring that Board members are meeting their obligations effectively, and conducting an annual Board performance evaluation, to name but a few details of this responsibility.

Each of these responsibilities will be elaborated in upcoming articles. But the major purpose of this article was to clarify what a Board of Directors does, and to generate thought about the Board of Directors as another part in the working machine of an effective organization. The Board of Directors is indeed another team that must be nurtured if it is to operate effectively.

Do you agree or disagree Aristotle's philosophy of friendship and why?

Aristotle's definition of friends are:
* each person has good will toward the other person.
* each person wishes good will toward the other person because of any one of the following three motives: usefulness, pleasure, or moral goodness (For aristotle, acting toward another person from anyone of these three motives is enough to produce a type of friendship)
* Each person knows that the other person has good will toward him or her.

I have to do an essay asking the question,"How do you know who your friends are?" and agree or disagree with Aristotle's philosophy of friendship. Can you give me some ideas for my essay?

I agree with Aristotle's philosophy, it's one of the rightest thoughts, but we have to admit there are a lot of exceptions. Actually, there are few examples that confirm the thoughts of this Ancient Greek philosopher, but these are very strong and can last forever. For your essay you can write about people helping each other, be there when you need them, help you, love you, sacrifice things for you, care for you, don't let you do things that can harm you and all these things come and go, you have to do them too if you are a good friend and all these stuff about friendship. It's an easy theme for an essay.

We keep hearing about how wonderful it will be when students can learn 24/7, thanks to the advent or at least the dissemination of virtual learning environments, learning platforms, or whatever other name you wish to give them.

But what does this really mean, and what pressures does it place on teachers?

What does 24/7 learning mean?

The answer, to be precise, is nothing at all, on the simple grounds that we always have learnt 24/7 from the moment we appeared on the planet. After all, even when you're sleeping, your brain is still doing data processing. In other words, the term is a misnomer: what it should really be is 24/7 access.

Now, you may think that this is unduly pedantic, but it is, I believe, an important point to make. I was one of the trainers on a course for headteachers (principals) recently, and one of the headteachers said something along the lines of: "Why should we expect children to learn 24/7? Aren't they allowed to be children?"

If you take the view that children are always learning in some form or other, the question ceases to have meaning, or at least the impression of systems being set up solely to ensure that children never have a break from formal schooling is dispelled.

The idea of being able to enjoy - and I do mean enjoy - 24/7 access is really an idea about choice. If you know that you can check what your homework is at 6 am or 10 pm (parents willing, or unknowing, of course!), then the idea of what we might call a personalised learning style starts to become a reality. This, too, is an important idea, and not merely clever wording. Educationalists often talk about individual learning styles, and personalised learning, but they do not put the two together. Having access 24/7 enables you to find, and then conform to, your on personalised learning style or, if you like, personalised learning pattern.

For example, I do my most creative work in the morning or late at night. The afternoon is my low point, and so to optimise the use of my time I reserve the afternoons for the things that don't require much creativity: shopping, paying bills, answering routine emails and so on. I am aided in this by the fact that I have 24/7 access to most of the resources I need in order to do my work.

The benefits of 24/7 access can - and should - be extended to parents also. Parents should be able to see what homework their child has been set, and how s/he is doing in tests, any time they like. We now live in an age where the fact that a parent or carer is working shift work, and can therefore rarely attend a parents' evening to meet his child's teachers to discuss her work, should not matter as much as it used to. In fact, the technology is there to enable parents 24/7 access to assignments and marks, and it is becoming harder and harder for schools to bury their heads in the sand and try to carry on business as usual as if nothing has changed. The fact that many parents do not want or cannot have 24/7 access is not in itself an excuse for not making the facility available.

However, there are always at least two sides to every issue, and in the case of 24/7 access there are several points that need to be addressed if teachers are not to feel under immense pressure to be available 24/7.

o	It should be axiomatic that 24/7 student access should not mean 24/7 teacher availability. Everyone knows this, but it isn't said - certainly not by those who have a vested interest in teachers being available 24/7 to meet students' and parents' demands!

o	If assignments, students' grades, lesson plans, worksheets and so on are to be placed on the web to be accessible 24/7, a system must first be put into place to make this happen that does not rely on teachers physically uploading the materials or data and fiddling with access rights. These jobs should be undertaken by administrative staff or network technicians. Certainly in the UK, teachers now have the right to refuse to undertake such work.

o	It's a good idea - in fact, virtually essential - for lesson plans and materials to be created and uploaded well in advance of when the teacher thinks they will be required. That really means right at the start of the school year. For that to happen, teachers must be given the time to do it. This could be achieved by teachers being given a week at the start of the term or semester before the students return to school after the summer break, ie have the students come in a week later. Alternatively, ask teachers to come in a week early - and pay them overtime to do so. And make sure that there is 24/7 access so that those teachers who prefer to work at 3 am on their materials can do so.

o	Students and parents need to have their expectations managed. To be specific, they need to know that the fact that they can submit their assignment at 2am on Sunday morning, or send a message to Mrs Jenkins at 8pm on Friday night, does not entitle them to a reply any faster than would have been the case had they done those things during normal school hours. In other words, the customer-focus nature of 24/7 access is to do with convenience for the customer; it does not bestow the right to insist on some version of a 24/7 call-out system. After all, education is important, but it hardly fits into the category of emergency service!

There is no doubt that 24/7 access has many benefits, but the underlying systems must be planned and managed properly, and customers' expectations managed wisely.

How do I increase my math knowledge?

I hate the fact that I'm 26 years old and can't do anything above simple multiplication. I've been looking online through google for some written tutorials on math, but I keep comming accross worksheets with no explanations of how to solve the problems. I work at crappy ass Kinko's and need to get far FAR away from this company, but I notice as I'm looking throgh job ads that alot of the positions require a slightly higher level of math skills than I posess. I have next to no free time so I'll have to take the hard road and try to teach myself as best as I can, so if you know any resources that would be to a very busy man's benefit please let me know. Oh, I also hate to pay for things lol!! so, if you know any FREE help please lit that first.
Thanks in advance.

You need to practice. Try going to your library and checking out some math textbooks. PreAlgebra, Algebra 1. Chances are, they will have examples, vocabulary, and a detailed lesson. Do some problems in the chapter review. If you're still unsure as to how to do it, you need to ask someone for a visual lesson.
Youtube is a great place to start! Type in what you wanna learn. Example: "Long Division Tutorial." You will find video lessons, and then after you get that, you can google for worksheets since you know how to do them, or you could message the creator of the video.

Good luck!

Human beings are the building blocks of society. The societies agglomerate to make states. And then the nations are formed. The economy of a nation is the indicator of its prosperity. What the economy affects primarily are the people of a country. The technique, which uses the concepts of macroeconomics to achieve social goals, has been christened as welfare economics. Economics with all the data, tables, graph etc. can seem to be a very strict and rigid field. But the economists have now attached the human touch to the economic sphere too. Broadly speaking this field essentially involves the distribution of wealth among all the people and hence providing them with the buying capacity.

The need for this approach to study economics arises because of the increasing index of poverty. The people normally do not pay heed to the poor and the needy. There are increasing numbers of people involved in minimum wage jobs. They are employed but yet poor. The wage jobs do not cover the medical insurance or education for the kids. Now in this situation the person prefers to fulfill the need of a square meal then to go for the education option.

In a democratic set up it is seen that the welfare takes a high position in the agenda of the governments. This is, for one, required to ensure the votes. And secondly democracy has an influence of socialism and communism in it, thus the psyche of the government is for the benefit of the masses. America is known for being one such democracy. There are enough people to work for such causes.

The gamut of social welfare is very wide and anything can be brought under it. In one way it is provision of safety to the country's citizens. Safety from poverty, hunger, disease and many other things a social worker can think of. Now a very thought-worthy question arose when Ralph Nadar brought forward the concept of corporate welfare to the forefront, in 1956. This involves giving tax holidays and other regulatory leverages to the corporations. The debatable issue is that the corporate firms in a capitalist structure cannot be expected to work for the social welfare. And at every step the interests of society and the corporate seem to clash. The design of the corporate structure of the country should be such that it can cater to the needs of themselves as well as those of the society. Corporate governance jurisprudence is probably stemmed out of such conflicts.

The core issue of this problem is probably the distribution of income. The dichotomy on this count arises when one school of thought suggests the governmental influence on income slabs and the other theorizes that government should not at all be involved but it should be the sole discretion of the employer to pay the employees. The actual game lies somewhere in the middle. The governmental regulations do influence the wage schemes. The need of the hour is however, to check the accumulation majority of the wealth among a few hands.

The economic reforms to boost the grass root level employees too have to be brought because it is they who really are at the hem of the economic growth. The new approach is good from the point of view of the low-income people but a balance has to be struck between their interests and the interests of business giants.

What font do the Dummy books use?

i.e (Google for Dummies, Computers for Dummies, Economics for Dummies etc.)
I am talking about the cover. The white text. I am making a photoshop picture and I want it to look real. I'm making Dummies for Dummies

Go to this page:

http://www.typenow.net/themed.htm

... and scroll down to font #255:

it's not the original. It is not Myriad.

I also like the TIMMAY answer.

If you're the owner of a small business, the thought of creating a company newsletter or ezine can be a little scary. If you have little or no graphics design experience you may not know what to do to create a professional looking ezine or newsletter, and not one that screams, "I DID THIS ALL BY MYSELF!"

One way around this it to hire someone to create the newsletter for you. But not every small business owner has the funds for this. Still, a company newsletter is one of the best marketing tools you can create for your business. So try the following tips and develop a professional looking newsletter you'll be proud of:

1. Pick one font for headlines and subheads, another for text. A good combination is a bold sans serif headline font (like Futura ExtraBold Condensed or Helvetica Heavy or a modern-looking font like Meta, Moderna, or Officina San Serif) paired with a simple serif font (Times, Garamond or Garamond Condensed, Galliard, etc.) for text. Use a smaller italicized version of text font for photo captions.

2. ALL text should be the same size (12 point usually, or sometimes 10 or 11 point, depending on the font); use uniform sizes for heads and subheads--larger headlines for more important articles. Most page layout and word processing programs let you set up style sheets. Set up a style for text, headlines, subheads, captions, etc. This is a very easy way to lay out the newsletter, making sure all fonts and sizes are uniform.

3. Flush left/ragged right text looks best. Justified columns can leave weird looking spaces between words, and centered headlines, text, and ads tend to give the newsletter an amateur appearance.

4. Look at some newsletters. Find a design you really like; set your newsletter up the same way - same number of columns, same size margins, and same size sidebars on each page. Don't try to make each page have its own design. Pages should have a uniform look.

Follow these tips to create a short, simple newsletter at first. Over time, you can develop additional topics and columns for your newsletter. First, just learn the basics of creating a professional looking publication that can be used to help create a closer, ongoing relationship with your customers and clients.

McCain: "economy is strong" -- you think he has Alzheimer's?

the day the stock market nosedives almost as much as 9-11, huge banks are filing chapter 11 right and left, and mccain stands up and says the economy is 'strong'?!! i heard on the news last night he has said the economy is strong over 20 times just this year. Granted by his own admittance he is not good at economics but if you aren't good at something the safe thing to do is rattle off headlines, not say the exact opposite of the obvious. What could make him say something like this other than some kind of age-related mental thing?

Yes, the principles and fundamentals of our capitalistic society are strong! Checks and balances are normal. Bad decisions by corporate greed is sad but normal (been going on since the days of Rome). Unethical and unstable banks failing is normal (been going on for centuries).

However, to blame it all on Bush or to compare this to the S&L crisis of the 80's is economically immature and shows a great lack of business knowledge. I know Obama trys real hard and he wants to be a big boy at the presidential table but his inexperience is showing greatly. He can only get by so long on good looks and eloquent speeches.

The tragic events in Florida point up again the fact that adverse events, whether weather related or manmade are an unavoidable part of life for individuals and communities. However, it is through planning, preparation, practice and unfortunately experience that the communities of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County turn tragedy into triumph with their rapid response, their professional caring and their ability to keep needs from exceeding resources, in short, they diverted large scale disaster.

To be certain, the severe weather and tornadoes that ravaged Lake, Brevard and Volusia County were tragedies on an individual and even local basis. Lives were lost. Homes destroyed. Businesses leveled. On the other hand, Lake, Brevard and Volusia County are served by some of the best first responders, search and rescue, emergency management and disaster response professionals in the State of Florida and in the nation. Storms have struck in the wee early morning hours and caused large swathes of devastation, these were answered by professionals who were on the road before daylight even broke. Within hours, the overall damages had been assessed. Urban search and rescue was on the job before the fog had even fully burnt off and had been stood down, having completed their task by 4:00 p.m.

To be sure, there will be an ongoing recovery efforts in Florida, but it is through planning and preparation that this community, vulnerable at a higher degree than most, due to the large number of manufactured homes and its own beautiful lake dotted landscape, completed its recovery phase in such a short time.

The disaster lifecycle consists of four phases:

* Interphase

* The Adverse Event

* The Response Phase

* The Recovery Phase

The interphase is that period beginning at the end of the previous recovery and continuing until the next adverse event. It is during this phase that planning, preparation, practice and review occur. Resources are amassed and professional community education are advanced. It is during the interphase that the ability to respond to the next adverse event is determined.

The adverse event is a discreet moment in time, when adversity strikes, but Lake, Brevard and Volusia County when severe storms and tornadoes represented a discreet moment when disaster responses began and damages were mitigated, but the adverse event itself could not be prevented. New early detection equipment and the newest of Doppler radars have afforded the people of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County a small but expanded window of time to see shelter and begin and activate their disaster plans. Less than a decade ago, the warnings would have been measured in minutes, now they are measured in minutes to hours.

The response phase begins at the moment that the adverse event strikes and continues until needs no longer exceed resources. Thanks to the dedicated professionals of Lake, Brevard Volusia County, excellent disaster planning, extensive disaster preparedness, adequate practice and unfortunately hard earned experience, the response in Florida was short lived. By sundown on the first day, the majority of the response phase has been completed and recovery has actually begun. The usual community or countywide disaster lasts three to seven days, before the response is completely shutdown and certainly the response in Lake County and Volusia County will continue in earnest for at least that long. However, most experts agree that recovery cannot begin in the first three days, yet Lake County and Volusia County were already calling in recovery professionals by midday on the first day of their response. Their recovery plans were already in full swing by nightfall.

Recovery begins with good planning and certainly this is an exampled of just such a recovery.

The people of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County, Florida, are to be admired for the professionalism, the bravery and the strength in which they have faced their most recent tragedies. While they suffered personal disasters, they staved off countywide and regional disaster and even communitywide catastrophe. They insured that resources exceeded needs and that the ability to respond was never lost.

On official appeared on television, shortly after the tragic event of the morning and asked that those listening on the radio and watching on television remember the people of Lake, Brevard and Volusia County in their prayers. I would add that we not only extend prayer, but congratulations and admiration to two counties and multiple communities that have learned the lesson that we all must learn: Plan, Prepare, Educate, Respond and Recover to Save Lives and Livelihoods.

ucla adult education teaching credential

As you decide where to attend graduate or professional school, you cannot afford to be naive: Where you get your advanced degree and the grades you earn in your graduate program will determine the course of your professional career-where you will work, how much you will earn, and the special privileges you will enjoy. The more prestigious your degree and the better your grades, the more doors magically will swing open for you. Of course, at ivy-covered schools, you pay a fortune to earn a fortune. Instead, consider a graduate or professional school with Ivy League credentials, reputation, and prestige at a state-supported price. Consider UCLA for your degree in law or medicine or for your PhD.

Have no doubt that UCLA rivals Harvard, Yale, Stanford and other big-name spendy places: According to a survey by the National Research Council, eleven of 36 UCLA PhD. programs ranked in the nation's top 10, and 31 of the 36 ranked in the nation's top 20. Translation: post-doctoral opportunities or prestigious teaching jobs after graduation plus ample opportunities for publishing your dissertation as a book. The Princeton Review's annual survey of "College Hopes and Worries" named UCLA as the nation's number one "dream school." Just as importantly, more UCLA Law School graduates landed associate positions at the nation's high-powered law firms than any other school except Harvard, and more UCLA MD's earned residencies at America's Top 10 hospitals than graduates of any other university west of the Mississippi.

The quality-to-cost ratio definitely works in your favor. A California resident pays slightly more than $27,000(US) for a year in a UCLA graduate program-that includes housing, food, and incidentals as well as fees and books. A Harvard graduate student pays approximately $52,000(US) per year-nearly twice the UCLA price for a comparable education. Even if a UCLA graduate student must pay out-of-state tuition, the registration and instructional fees are barely 60% of what a Harvard student pays.

At UCLA, you enjoy the benefits of world-class faculty, brilliant classmates, a state-of-the-art curriculum, and exceptional research facilities...plus you are only a five-minute walk from Hollywood.

Did you know you can get a $10,000 scholarship for Moms just for registering? Apply right now for free: Scholarships for Moms

Philosophy For Dummies Free

One of the key characteristics that successful people have is a winning mindset. They have learned over time to program their mind for success. That's what gives them the edge in competitive situations. This mindset allows them to hit the winning shot at the buzzer, sink the crucial putt on the 18th hole to win the tournament, or even purchase or sell their home! The question is why do some people have it and others don't? How can you ensure that you acquire the winning mindset? Let me take you through the development of a winning mindset.

1. Record and replay the tape: Now, I don't mean that you have to record yourself on a recorder. You do need to write down on paper (and track) your victories. We all have a lot of victories daily, weekly, and monthly. We just have a hard time remembering them. If we record them, we can review them during the challenges we are facing. When we lose our self-confidence, we can build it through reviewing our past victories. A lot of our victories, we will find, come out of a very challenging problem or struggle we are having. This review will also show us the direct correlation between the challenges we face and the victories we have. The key is to review them regularly. Review them, so you can invest them to pay dividends today, and tomorrow.

2. Understand the game you are playing: The highest peak performers understand the game they are playing- how to score and win. When I was younger, I played racquetball professionally. I always had a philosophy that if I finished second, it was the same as losing. I could have won all the other matches to the final, but losing the final was as bad as losing in the first round. For me, there was no second place. Business is the same way. Have you ever gotten paid for coming in second? Second place does not make the mortgage payment. Make sure you are playing to win. Understand the reality of the business that you are in. Develop the focus that you need to compete at the highest level.

3. The secret edge: Believe in yourself. The best of the best in life believe in themselves. Michael Jordan believed to his core that he was the best. His belief, and his sheer will to win, created the best basketball player ever. I read an article about a survey in which professional golfers were asked, "If you had one putt to win a major championship, who would you pick to putt it?" Almost all of them chose Jack Nickalaus. Why, because he knew he was the best and had the ability to will the ball into the hole. When I sold real estate, I truly believed I was the best Agent for the job. That belief extended beyond just my market place. The question is what do you believe? When your confidence goes up, your competence goes up at the same time. Program your mind, through affirmations, that you are the best. Say aloud daily: "I am a great business person", "I am the best that someone can hire to do the job", "I provide exceptional service to my clients." You must drive your belief deep. It truly is the secret weapon for all peak performers.

We must invest time daily to develop the winning mindset. Take the time to record your victories. Review them daily, weekly, and monthly. Work to improve your belief in yourself. We all came from the same creator. He didn't create any junk. You have it inside you to be exceptional. The secret edge is belief.

Norman Vincent Peale said, "Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities. Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers, you cannot be successful or happy. Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind . . . a mental picture of yourself succeeding. Hold the picture tenaciously; never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture."

Parochial and private schools are educational institutions operated by religious or private groups which are funded in whole or in part by the students' tuition in contrast to public schools which are administered and financed by the local, state or national government. However, some parochial schools are also subsidized by government funds depending on the country or the institutions' affiliations. Private schools, on the other hand, are independent institutions that have their own programs and requirements in selecting students. However, they still follow the rules and regulations appropriated to them by the Department of Education.

Parochial schools in the United States were, in the past, non-public. In fact, Catholic elementary schools were often attached to local parish churches. But nowadays, parochial schools are no longer just Catholic parochial schools but also refer to schools operated by different religions. These include Protestant, Jewish and Muslim, among many others. Parochial schools are independently established and operated by a religious institution and run by lay trustees or the members of the religious order. These institutions may or may not operate under public school standards depending on the differences of laws which differ from state to state. Parochial schools include religious education into their curriculum that aim to teach students their beliefs, doctrines, rituals, customs, rites, and personal roles.

Private schools are independent schools which are not run by the local, state or national government. They have the right to choose their students and to design their own curriculum. They are funded in whole or in part by their students' tuition but can also be subsidized by a private company or institution. The tuition fee varies from school to school and whether the private school is boarding or day. Boarding schools in general are more expensive due to the board and lodging fees that are included with the tuition. The tuition also depends on the location of the school, the willingness of parents to pay, peer tuitions, and if the school is subsidized by another institution.

Parochial schools are subcategorized under private schools since they are privately financed and are also funded by the students' tuition fees. Both parochial and private schools design their own curriculum and regulations but often comply with the Department of Education's regulations related to the educational content of classes. Parochial schools often just add religious instruction to the curriculum provided in public schools while private schools can include special classes such as those related to languages, arts, and sciences among others. Both, however, provide better classroom conditions such as smaller number of students per class, low student to teacher ratio and facilities such as libraries, science laboratories, and computers, among many others.

What do you think?

Some school curriculums around the world stress on the idea that the sciences, specifically, should be "analytical oriented" when taught. In other words, they concentrate on teaching students how to solve scientific problems analytically and logically rather than making the students memorize facts and information about scientific concepts, theories, and scientists. However, other school curriculums aim for the latter. They think that making a student memorize scientific concepts, theories, and scientists would enable the student to understand and grasp problem-solving skills and analysis at university better. So what do you think? Do you think that the sciences at schools should be analytical oriented or memory oriented? Please, explain why.
N.B: When I refer to schools, I mean High Schools where the sciences are chemistry, physics, and biology.

I think it should definitely be analytical. By the time people have finished their high school career, they'll have forgotten most of what they've memorized. But understanding can't be forgotten. That's the path to life time knowledge.
In today's world, there's no need for rote memorization. Need to know the molecular weight of an element? It's on the internet. Avogodro's number? Internet. Or in a book, that, if you're doing these problems, is probably somewhere near you.
Even not just looking at the modern world, analytical skills have always been more prized in the science world than memorized knowledge. My chemistry teacher has told us time and time again how he never had to memorize the periodic table - Not in high school, not in college, not while getting his master's. He knows a lot of it because he's used it on a near daily-basis for decades, but never had any of his professors or teachers provided a single student to memorize it. Another, albeit also anecdotal, example, my father is a retired engineer for P&G. When he retired he brought home a lot of his books. They list nearly every mathematical and scientific constant you could ever need! All the formulas, the meanings of symbols. And my father is not a young man. Memorization has never been that prized in the industry. Scientists and mathematicians have always been provided with the formulas, with the constants. What showed you were capable was your ability to apply them.

Great question by the way. And great to see a person who (maybe?) knows some Latin, with the NB for Nota Bene.

Getting a teaching job is more difficult than ever. Baby boomers simply are not retiring in the numbers previously expected, many people are switching careers to become teachers, and now soaring fuel costs and a tough economy have led school districts across the country to make massive budget cuts. In fact, some schools are cutting their budgets by so much that they are expected to actually lay off teachers. For example, in Manatee County, Florida, the school district is expecting to make close to 30 million dollars in budget cuts and may possibly lay off as many as 400 teachers.

Therefore, finding a teaching job is more difficult than ever before. And, the reality is, a new teacher may not find one the first go around.

Therefore, prospective teachers will have to do everything they can to get "their foot in the door" at local schools.

The question is, "What is the best way for teachers to get their foot in the door in a way that will best help them secure a teaching job down the road?"

The two obvious choices are substitute teaching or working as a teacher's aide.

There are pros and cons to both...

Substitute Teaching

Pros...

By substituting you get to know many schools and will know which one you would rather work at. You will get to know many administrators and teachers who can help you get a job either at their school or write recommendations and place phone calls to get you in at another school. You will also get to work with many different grade levels and therefore get to know which age group you like best.

Just remember, if you are going this route you must think of everyday as a job interview...dress the part, be professional, and MAKE CONTACTS.

Cons...

Substituting is not teaching. Most teachers will leave some type of busy work for the students when they have a substitute teacher...or a movie. The reason is that the teacher doesn't usually know who the sub is going to be and it is quite difficult to leave extensive lesson plans for a sub.

The other problem is discipline...substituting can be quite difficult in terms of classroom management. However, just because you are not a good substitute does not mean that you will not be a good teacher...unfortunately, if you are not a good substitute you may very likely get an undeserved bad reputation as a teacher who does not have good classroom management skills. Therefore, while you decided to substitute to help you get a job it may actually backfire. Likewise, I have seen many good substitutes NOT do well as classroom teachers.

Teacher's Aide

Pros...

You are getting valuable teaching experience. Aides have tendency to do much more "teaching" in their job. They are often working with individual students, learning from master teachers, and applying the teaching strategies learned in professional development courses. This will look much better when it comes to interviewing as you can discuss actual lesson plans and various strategies you have used in the classroom.

Another strong argument for going this route is that the contacts you make are much better. Since you are working with only a handful of teachers you get to know them well. Likewise, you have the opportunity to get to know your administrators better than a substitute and this can pay off big in the long run.

Cons...

The major downside to working as a teacher's aide is that you are only in one school and usually only one grade level/subject and therefore will not be able to make nearly as many contacts or see different schools, grade levels, subjects etc.

In the end, with teaching jobs becoming more difficult to secure, a prospective teacher will need to make the tough decision on which route to take in order to get their foot in the door.

Personally, when weighing the pros and cons I tend to lean towards working as a teacher's aide. While you will not make as many contacts, the contacts you do make can always help you get a teaching job at another school by simply writing a letter and placing a phone call on your behalf. Plus, there is simply no substitute for real classroom experience.

How did a young boy who walked from his tribal village of Tumbuka in Nyasaland (now Malawi) to Khartoum, Sudan, a distance of 3,200 kilometres, seeking opportunities for further education become a professor of political science at Cambridge University in England and a widely respected author?

Yes! Professor Legson Kayira completed a perilous 3,000-mile, two-year journey on foot with absolutely no money or resources except for a five-day supply of food, a Bible and The Pilgrim's Progress (his two most treasures), a blanket and a small axe for protection when he left his tribal village of Tumbuka in Nyasaland in October 1958. The truth is, because his parents were illiterate, they were not even sure the exact date that he left, but he should be sixteen or seventeen years old when he left for Cairo on foot in a bid to board a ship to America to get a college education.

Legson like many others in the village of Tumbuka believed that studying was a waste of time for a poor boy. So, he sometimes used his poverty as an excuse for not doing his best at school or for not accomplishing something with his life. Then on day he read in the books provided by missionaries about Abraham Lincoln and Booker T. Washington.

As such, Legson wanted to be like his hero, Abraham Lincoln, who had risen from poverty to become an American president and fought tirelessly to abolish slaves trade, thereby helped free the slaves. Yes! Legson wanted to be like his hero, Booker T. Washington, who was brought as a slave to America and had cast off the shackles of slavery to become a great American reformer and educator.

Therefore, being inspired by their stories, Legson like these great role models, wanted to serve mankind and to make a difference in the world. Hence, he realized that he needed an education to be able to see the fulfilment of his dream. And America was the best place for him to get this education. This was how Legson conceived the idea for his walk to Cairo where he would board a ship to America.

As he engaged in his perilous journey, most times he walked alone and at other times he walked with strangers. Oh! Many nights he slept under the stars. But at other times, he found work and shelter. Legson had this motor - " I will not stop until I reach America or until I die trying to reach my destination". Even when he became thin and weak due to feeding on wild fruits, berries and other edible plants, he never gave up his dream. When he ran out of food and water, when he had no money and when he was struck by fever and he became gravely ill, Legson was holding on to his motor.

I like to announce to you, Legson Kayira carrying his two most treasured books - The Bible and The Pilgrim's Progress arrived at Skagit Valley College in America on December 1960 after more than two years his journey began.

Today, Legson Kayira has become a professor of political science at Cambridge University in England and he is a widely respected author. His first book was the autobiographical I Will Try (1965), and he has written four novels: The Looming Shadow (1968), Jingala (1969), The Civil Servant (1971), and The Detainee (1974). I like to ask this question: what was his success secret?

Success is not a destination but an adventure; which is accessible to all who dare to venture. So, you can break every single limitations standing before you and your future. When you dare to venture, no limitations can contend it.

IT IS A CHOICE

The journey to your success is an individual's choice or will. Hear me,

"Success doesn't just 'happen' you set it in motion". - Dr Mike Muddock

It is your choice that is the compass that point to your destination. It is your will that provokes the strength in you to do what you could not have done. For instance, there is a story of a pregnant woman; who being chased by a mad dog jumped over a seven feet wall! The will to live infused a strange strength into her. Therefore, your choice to succeed is what generates in you the force to succeed. Likewise, the will to succeed drives you to break limitations in life.

Occasionally, tears are allowed in your eyes but don't allow it to tear you down. Once your choice to make it is in place, your enviable destiny is secure. Friends! All you need is to break your limitations into greatness by the power of the will.

Again, may I let you know? There is no such thing as a born-made person. Success is not a gift; it is a choice. Friends! You can't choose to succeed and lack the drive. The drive is inherent in the choice you make. It is this drive that will break every single limitations contending with your success. Do not just wish to succeed. For a wish is an idle thought to which no commitment is attached? It is a mere daydreaming.
