You are a new teacher in your class material is vast and the readings are many. You need a way to make sure all the material is covered while avoiding lecture and encouraging students to work together. Here is a technique: jigsaw, which allows you to accomplish all of these objectives in an interesting and exciting manner.

Imagine you have a classroom of 16 students with four readings and four primary topics. Imagine each reading would take the students 30 minutes to read and consider. They come to class with two or three comments for clarification or discussion. It would be asking a lot to have each student read all four readings and conduct the level of analysis that you want to do inside the classroom. Chances are no student will do all of the work.

It would be very difficult in a two-hour classroom session to listen to the detailed work that each student might have performed. Nothing will turn a student off more than having completed all that reading and then not get a chance to discuss their insights in the classroom. The jigsaw technique is designed to avoid those problems and encourage students to take active participation in their own education.

Here is the idea:

1. On the day before the class organize your 16 students into four groups of four.

2. Assign each group before one of the readings with a set of discussion questions that you want them to develop a group answer on in the class the next day.

3. They will be responsible for reaching consensus or agreeing to disagree in the first half-hour of the class. It's good if you have a whiteboard or butcher paper charts for them to record their small group discussion points.

4. At the end of the first 30 minutes each group has posted their notes on a whiteboard and have elected a spokesperson to present a 5 min summary of their discussions to the rest of the class. Therefore, in the first hour of class all four readings have been discussed at least in their own groups. The students have been engaged in for interesting conversations and they've had practice talking in a small group and to the group at large.

5. In the second hour the class gets to vote on which of the four discussion areas they want to pursue first.

6. Your job is the teacher now is simply to moderate the discussion and ensure that all four topic areas have an opportunity to be explored. You will reserve the last 10 minutes of class in order to provide a wrap up and provide some additional context for the students and the knowledge they have just created.

7. You have a set of teaching notes that identify the crucial points for each group so you can ensure the important material is addressed wither by the students or in your summary. You have a summary handout that is an excellent takeaway to ensure they have a set of crucial notes for further review and reference.

I have used this technique extensively in a variety of classes and with many different student demographics and discovered that it is a real winner here in the quality of discussion is enormous and students are willing to do their reading since they know they will have a chance to talk about it. They will also feel a responsibility to do the reading in order to share their work with others heard students will read for their friends as a motivation when they might not read just for themselves.

Give this technique a try and see if it works for you!

How can I improve my CV to help my chances of becoming a teacher?

I am 28 and previously worked in management positions in call centres. Prior to this, I completed a law degree at university.

I think they'll want to grab you for the teaching profession. I don't think you'll have any difficulty in persuading them to take you on. What you might consider doing is some kind of voluntary youth work locally (for which they're always crying out for volunteers). You would have to undergo a vetting process, which would be rather a bore, but it would show commitment to working with youngsters. Even though it is a natural process that we will all eventually face, aging is a mysterious phenomenon that can only be truly understood if its experienced. Because of the infinite organic changes that place in the body during aging, it's hard to pinpoint aging as one, unique event.

Like all organic substances, a shelf life is assigned to every living creature. Just like food can go bad overtime, so is the case of the human body. You can store cereal for over a year - its shelf life. Store it incorrectly however, and its shelf life will be reduced. Whether the cereal is stored properly or improperly, its taste and texture will change as time goes by. Why is this?

The cereal, like the human body can exist under specific conditions. After its shelf-life reaches a certain point, the cereal's composition changes. If it is not protected while in storage, it can turn foul before its assigned shelf-life is over.

The human body was deigned to endure over 100 years of life. Nevertheless, specific lifestyles can seriously modify the true life expectancy of a human being. Today, humans' life expectancy averages around 75 years of age. The difference lies in the effects of the world we live in today, which is filled with chemicals, pollutants, preservatives, and other synthetic products that alter our body's endurance and life span.

Aside from the detrimental effects of common environmental factors, aging is also ruled by genetic factors passed down by generations of family history. Hereditary traits play a crucial role in how an individual will age, and they are especially important after the age of 30, which is when the aging process beings to take place. At this time, hereditary traits are more likely to develop as the body's preparation is reduced. In air of reduced immune function, disorders can develop more readily.

To simplify the definition of aging, it's a phenomenon occurs in our bodies as soon as we stop developing, and it increases exponentially as time goes by. Aging consists mainly of the deterioration of body tissues as a result of wear and tear on the body throughout the years. While everyone ages differently, the effects of aging are the same in all of us. To best preserve our bodies, it's all about identifying how we are aging so as to tackle our aging weaknesses.

The government's discovered that sometimes you can't give money away. After losing a series of tax decisions involving the federal 3% telecommunications excise tax, the IRS conceded defeat and agreed to refund over-collected telecommunications taxes. According to a Treasury Inspector General Report ("Report") issued on April 24, 2008, the telephone excise tax refund was the most wide-reaching tax refund in the history of the IRS, estimated to affect between 13.9 and 15.9 million business taxpayers.

Despite the enormity of the refund program and substantial outreach efforts by the IRS, the Report indicates that only 5.6% of eligible businesses participated and only 17.5% of the $5 billion in potential refunds were claimed by businesses. Put another way, of the $5 billion collected over $4 billion is still owed to businesses and 94% of businesses are still eligible for refunds.

While praising the IRS outreach efforts, the Report notes "we believe a significant amount of the telephone excise tax collected could go unrefunded, and many taxpayers might still be eligible to file a claim."

Even though the taxes collected relate to the period March, 2003 through July 2006 (41 months), the IRS developed a procedure to toll the normal statute of limitations, making calendar year taxpayers eligible for refunds 3 years from filing their 2006 income tax return. To request the excise tax refund, taxpayers were to file Form 8913 with their 2006 income tax return. For those who missed the credit or understated the credit, Form 8913 should be filed with an amended return to obtain a refund. Eligible taxpayers include corporations, S-corporations, partnerships and tax exempt entities.

Businesses may use either the actual or the estimation method. For business with 250 or fewer employees, the estimation method allows up to a 2% credit based on telecommunication expenses for the 41 month period. For businesses with more than 250 employees, the estimation method probably severely understates the refund amount by capping the credit at only 1% of telecommunication charges. The actual refund method is usually over 2.5% but requires more analysis of the underlying communication charges and taxes imposed by the specific telecommunication carriers. Communication charges are not limited by the manner of delivery so that in addition to land lines, cell phones, VoIP also qualify for refunds. Refunds are further increased by interest on the tax payments dating back to the time of payment over the 41 month period.

The Report noted that the IRS had competing objectives in administering the program: 1) minimize taxpayer and IRS burden with requesting, processing and paying the refunds; 2) minimize refunds in excess of taxes collected; and 3) discourage overstated refund requests. While the IRS encouraged taxpayers to file for refunds, it also warned against fraud and established screens to help identify refund claims that appeared to be overstated.

Attempting to explain the low level of business participation in filing refund claims, the Report noted several possible explanations, including: 1) perception that work and associated fees outweighed the amount of credit; 2) incorrect perception that telephone expense would have to be reversed from prior years adding additional tax preparation expense; 3) concern that they would not be able to provide the necessary records needed to support the credit claim; and, 4) businesses and many tax preparers were not aware of the credit.

The Report included recommendations to the IRS for improvement including improving the screening criteria to better identify potentially fraudulent claims and shifting resources for future programs to optimize the effectiveness of its mission. The most alarming recommendation of the Report asked that the IRS contact taxpayers and tax preparers who did not claim the credit to find out why the refunds were not claimed. The IRS agreed with this recommendation and indicated it would work with Treasury to better understand why the telecom excise refund tax wasn't being claimed.

Although counter intuitive, it's clear from the Report that the IRS is interested in businesses obtaining their telecom excise tax refund. The good news for businesses and the IRS is that with a three year statute of limitations for making the claims, both the IRS and businesses can still accomplish the telecom excise tax refund program goals.

Can I go to Harvard with no honors classes freshmen year?

I am going to be a Freshmen this coming September and my schedule is as follows

Yes, of course it is! This part is important though:
Do well in them (get all a's) and don't rely on non-honors courses to get you into a high level school. They WILL look at honors and ap (especially ap) courses in the next 3 years.

Just to warn you, I know you dont want to hear this because theres not much you can do about it, but you really should be in a higher level math class. I took geometry in 8th grade (and all the honors courses i could take the last 2 years), and I most likely wont get into harvard. Just warning you.

All in all, talk to someone from harvard. They will have information to help you on their website, so check them out there.

1. Enter the danger.

Be willing to take risks. Respond to situations directly, as opposed to avoiding them. Be bold when you least want to be bold. In layoffs, for example, state what you need to say directly and with compassion. If it's inevitable, don't put it off. Entering the danger can be as simple as taking the next logical step in the direction your company needs to go. Along with saying, "Yes, and...," principle number four, it's an invaluable tool for moving into the future.

2. Be interested, not interesting.

Listening to others is a great tool for leading on your feet. When you stop trying so hard, you're more open and available to quick thinking and innovative ideas. Being "over there" with the other person, helps free you from self-consciousness. Empty your mind when listening. Place your attention on what the other person is saying, instead of filling up your thoughts with how you intend to respond. Be interested, and people will open up to you.

3. Celebrate failure--mistakes are gifts.

Abraham Maslow, the father of Humanistic Psychology, said that if you don't fail at least 5 times a day, you aren't trying hard enough. Defeat is not falling down. Defeat is falling down and not getting up again. When you fail, don't try to hide it. Celebrate it. Look for the learning in each mistake. Discover the innovation in a mistake, like when 3M made the Post-it due to a mistake in their experiments on adhesives.

4. Say, "Yes, and...."

Use this tool for brainstorming and building ideas. You limit your ability to build innovation in your team if you don't invite suggestions. Elaborate on those ideas with the words, "yes, and...."Saying "yes" represents the acceptance of an idea; adding "and" takes the idea into the future, making it more robust and encompassing everyone's contributions. Collect people's ideas electronically during a brainstorming session and project them for all to see. Don't delete too early - say "yes, and..." before narrowing down options.

5. Get and give feedback.

Don't save the hard stuff for employee reviews. To build trust, keep communication and feedback as current as you can. This is important, and can easily become urgent if not addressed up front. Giving ongoing feedback is worth the time and effort it takes. Think of it as slowing down to speed up. It's also important to seek feedback from your employees. Find out what the unintended consequences of your attitudes, behaviors and decisions are on your team. This feedback will help you grow and identify blind spots.

FISH Philosophy Video and Vegetarian Rights in the Workplace?

Workplaces are supposed to respect religious beliefs of their workers, but what about other types of moral and ethical beliefs? If I am being forced to watch videos with 20 minutes of fish carcasses for my job, that offend my beliefs, do I have the right to be exempt? I work as a teacher in a school, not in a restaurant or anything. I brought it up with supervisors but wasn't taken seriously.

While I don't think it's fair that you are not listened to when you bring this up, I feel that if everyone had 'rights' when it came to their moral and ethical views that would start to be abused, people would use it as an excuse and invent new morals that suit them. However, vegetarianism is a wide-spread and socially acceptable dietary choice now and perhaps individual cases should be considered and listened to.

The Sports Psychology Model of Confidence

One of the most common hurdles facing coaches of competitive athletes is competition nerves. Why is it that some athletes appear to rise to an occasion yet others appear to fall apart? Excessive nerves can be the result of a lack of confidence but this is often over-looked when the athlete in question seems to be completely confident in training.

Sports psychology techniques can help coaches to spot the symptoms and develop effective coping strategies to make under-achieving in competition a thing of the past.

What is confidence?

• One dictionary definition is: the belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something.
• The sports psychology 2 definition is: confidence is a state of mind, it i all about how you are thinking and what you are focusing on.

If an athlete has confidence in their abilities, self-belief, they will perform confidently - even when the pressure is on. So how do you build that confidence?

A lack of confidence generally stems from a fear of some sort. In competitive sport, a lack of self-belief can simply be a fear of the unknown. As an athlete, you may find yourself standing on the start-line of an important race when the 'what ifs' strike: "What if I can't do this; what if I'm not ready?" or "What if I get left miles behind and look like an idiot?"

This sort of self-doubt will have a negative impact on performance so as a coach, it becomes an important part of your role to limit the potential for 'what ifs' to enter an athlete's mind. Sports psychology can introduce coaches to mental training tools that equip them with the skills to help athletes banish the 'what ifs' by developing greater self-confidence.

The Sports Psychology Model of Confidence

Skill Set

Based on the pillars of performance, developing equal strength in the four key skill areas - technical, tactical, physical, psychological - will give athletes a solid structure on which to build self-confidence.

Negative 'what ifs' become positive 'what I haves' giving athletes belief in their abilities.

Values or Philosophy

A coach with strong values and a clear coaching philosophy will inspire confidence in his athletes. Knowing what you believe and knowing what it is you are all about makes it much harder for the 'what ifs' to interrupt your thoughts.

Capabilities

Identifying where strengths and weaknesses lie allows you to build on strengths and develop weaknesses to match those strengths. Experiencing progress through training and practice builds confidence in the knowledge that change is always possible. With a growth mindset, there can be no limit to your capabilities.

With the help of sports psychology techniques, coaches can learn to identify the source of each athlete's 'fear' and turn unknowns into familiars. Positive experiences in training will boost confidence in competition. After all, an athlete is unlikely to under-achieve through fear of the familiar!
