Do you want to start using stories in the preschool ESL classroom but don't know where to start? There are many great pre-k activities for ESL classrooms, including games, but it's also very important to not discount the power of stories. Whether you're reading a classic book, making up a story as you go along or designing a story specifically for a particular lesson, you'll want to be sure to include stories in the preschool ESL class every day.

One of the reasons why stories work so well in the ESL preschool classroom has to do with intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the theory that people are motivated by internal factors. Children of preschool age do not understand the external factors that might motivate an adult to decide to learn a second language, so as a teacher it's up to you to create a classroom that internally motivates them to participate in the activities and, ultimately, learn the language you are teaching.

Stories are perfect for teaching young ESL students because children already love stories and are already motivated at the thought of listening to one. In addition to that, when children listen to the stories, they are able to internalise the language structure and will eventually begin recognize words and phrases they hear in the stories. Besides, there are so many ways to use them in the classroom that the possibilities with stories are practically endless. Here are some possibilities on how you can use stories in your classroom:

Teach Vocabulary

Before you use a story in the ESL preschool classroom, you'll need to teach the students the key vocabulary words to they are able to follow the story. Thus the story can serve as a basis for drawing vocabulary words. It goes deeper than that, however. The students will not just "learn" the words, they will immediately see how the words are used and hear them in context of the language. This is so much more beneficial to the students than simply memorizing a list of words.

Vary Your Classroom Activities

Telling a story adds variety to your lessons in terms of content and pace. Preschoolers don't have a terribly long attention span, so you'll want to vary your activities throughout the class period. Changing your activities every five to ten minutes is appropriate for this age group - and that's a great length of time to spend telling a story. Furthermore, preschool students have a ton of energy, so you'll want to have some activities that allow them to burn this energy. To keep the class from getting out of control, use a story after a boisterous activity to allow everyone enough time to settle down before moving onto something else. Remember also that you can tell the same stories over and over again.

Be Creative

Whenever you tell a story allow your creativity show through. Have fun with it and go with the flow. Make animal sounds, change your voice, sing little songs and, most of all, use gestures. You might even be able to get some of your students to go along with you when it comes to animal sounds, songs and gestures.

Introduce Other Activities

Stories are a great jumping board for other activities. Here is just a sampling of activities you could do following a story:

* Give each student a picture that depicts the events of the story and have them line up in order of the events.

* Have the students come up with a title for the story. Allow as many titles as students who'd like to share one.

* Repeat quotes from the story and ask the students "Who said it?"

* Leave off the ending of the story and have the students predict what they think will happen. Then, read the ending of the story.

* Encourage the children to look for patterns in the story. Have them guess, for example, what the character will say if there is a pattern in what the character says.

* Teach them a song that goes along with the theme of the story.

* Teach them actions to go along with the songs.

* Let them act out parts of the story.

* Set up stations that allow them to dress up like characters in the story and do things the characters in the story did. So, if the characters in the story decorated cookies, give them some time to decorate cookies.

* Tell a story to introduce a new unit.

* Give the students three events in the story and ask them what came first.

* Have the students draw a picture about their favourite part of the story and then explain it to the class.

* Let the students tell about a similar experience they might have had.

There are so many things you can do with stories in the ESL classroom. Just let your imagination go and soon so will the imaginations of your students! Christians, do you think a preschooler should be homeschooled or in preschool?

I have a son who just turned four this week, they have vpk and I am looking into it. I live with my mother while I am getting my degree in elementary education, I have two more years to go. I have been with my son since he was born except for the occasional trip to the store, or my college to take a test or something like that. My mother works in the schools and insists that he needs to go to vpk from a teacher other than me to learn to take direction and socialize. I kind of agree, but he will be going four days a week if he goes, and for four hours a day. Isn't this alot to be away from his mother? He is only four, not fourteen. I feel like I will be letting him down and giving my motherly responsibilities to someone else, it is really making me sad. Should I just homeschool him and socialize through other supervised less time stressing activities? What is your opinion? We are Christian and I really want to do what is wanted by God.

If you don't have the time to give your son a good pre-school education then a preschool is the second best option. That having been said, a Christian parent is to give their children an education in what the Bible teaches about Jesus regardless of whether they are going to a regular school or not.

What school has the best MBA program in England?

I am an American student currently attending an Ivy League undergraduate program, where I will most likely get a degree in economics. I am open to the option of going to an international location for my MBA, and as such I am focusing on the UK. Now I know there are many rankings online, but they do not reflect the personal experiences of the students. From what I know there are many great schools, including Imperial College and the London School of Economics. So what makes some of the schools stand apart from the others? Are any of them extremely difficult for an American to gain admission to? Any insight would help.

What's the best major to go along with philosophy?

I don't think philosophy actually teaches you things as much as it develops thinking skills, so I would like to double major in philosophy and something that is more geared to teaching you. I am interested in many of the humanities, English, Journalism, Communication, Sociology, Psychology, History, and less interested in economics and political science, but if those are good to along with philosophy then please tell. Which one of the studies listed would go great with philosophy in your opinion and why?
If this helps, after double majoring I either want to go into Law school or do a PhD. program in Psychology, but that doesn't mean that the double major has to be Philosophy and Psychology.

In my opinion, the best major would be History. In Philosophy, you are taught the ideals and perspectives of many historical figures. What is lacking, however, is the historical context that contributes to these perspectives. The two subjects complement each other, and you will have a more rounded education because of that. Also, history is a very good precursor to law school if you are not too keen on political science. History provides background to the many forms of government institutions and statutes that create the basis for the justice system today. Good luck in school

You have heard that smiling and laughing can help relief you from feelings of stress and depression. We are not so naive as to think that superficially simulated laughter or smiles can change our situation or provide us with the solution to the issues we are facing.

What smiling and laughing can do is to open up an avenue for us to step back from the intensely negative feelings (stress, anger, frustration, maybe even bitterness) that controls us so we are relaxed enough to reassess the situation and be in a more conducive state physiologically, mentally and emotionally to reframe our perspectives. "Facial feedback" works.

There was a time in my life when I was exhausted crying, wasted, de-motivated and could not find a reason to be happy. It was one huge disillusion after another, one big disappointment after another - after a decade of dedication and commitment. I did not feel that I had enough strength to pick myself up again to carry on. I was totally de-motivated, I do not want to do anything nor see anyone. Nothing could force a smile out of my miserable state. It would be insulting to ask me to laugh.

Way back then, I did not know about coaching. It took me a long long time to get out of my stagnant stage.

What helped? I took 2 months off work, took the plane and flew to the States. This was one month after 911, people were fearful of flying and I headed straight for US! I stayed with my sister and her family and spent time with my then tiny little baby niece. She was absolutely adorable.

Just looking at the baby, being with her and taking her out for walks made me happy. Things seemed lighter and smiles started appearing on my face - voluntarily. What is it about babies? Her joy, hope, smiles and giggles melted my numb heart, they are contagious. That was love, hope and laughter therapy in action.

Like I say the situation has not changed, but my perspective of them have. Since then I have applied humor theory to other disillusionments I face.

When I allow the "issues" to be big and paramount, they took up so much space in my life that I had not noticed other things that were going on. All I could see was the darkness and hopelessness that I focused on. What you focus on expands, remember?

But when I detached myself and made light the situation, I saw how silly I was.

It is when I could laugh at myself that the issue lost its grip on me. It no longer controlled me. I could stand above the situation and know that although I have paid very expensive tuition fees I can learn and benefit from life's lesson.

And I want to you to know that one or two unfortunate incidences along the journey of learning no matter how big need not control the rest of your life.

You are not defined by what happened to you.

There is still so much work waiting for you to do!

So whatever stress, anxiety or depression you are going through, find a way to smile and laugh. Lighten up the situation; blow it out of proportion so you see that it really is just one part of your life, not the whole entity. Then take a good laugh at yourself.

When you can laugh at yourself you have discounted the effect of the unpleasant situation. It was after all only one mistake that you were silly enough to fall into but clever enough to jump out of! "Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it" says Bill Crosby.

When I was working on a Masters degree back in the early 90s one of the papers I wrote was on the Kondratieff Wave.  It's a theory that says economies go through predictable cycles and that economic depressions occur on a predictable basis.

 

It just so happens we are due for one now.  Will this financial turmoil in fact turn out badly just as the Kondratieff Wave predicts?

  

"But what the Kondratieff wave is about is a study of long cycles of debt buildup and repudiation. It is not exclusively about price inflation and deflation periods. Deflation is caused in part by the debt collapse. It is also a generational thing as the next cycle of debt buildup and collapse is renewed every 2-3 generations as the previous generation that went through comparable periods dies off. The old adage that "this time it is different" means the circumstances are different, yes, but they fail to recognize that the previous period was the same in terms of excesses and therefore the end result is the same."

 

And what is the problem we have now?  Massive debt at all levels of government.  Massive debt in the private sector.  Not only debt, but leveraged debt.  Obligations in the Social Security and Medicare programs that appear to be so large they cannot possibly be paid in the coming years unless the government simply prints money and allows inflation to spiral out of control.

 

So the theory predicts this generation will have a buildup of debt and a depression will result in order to repudiate that debt.  It is a historical fact that the theory was right on the first part, i.e., excessive debt.  Now the question is whether it will be right on the second part, an economic depression.

 

Certainly we've already had a depression in a number of industries as they have been bankrupted.  Unemployment is rising fast too, but is still at relatively low levels.  Will the Obama plan to throw trillions of dollars at the problem save us from a severe economic downturn that can be defined as a depression or will it simply delay the inevitable and perhaps create additional problems, such as high inflation, before the cycle has completed?  Only time will tell.

Many of us in life's ways learn of prayer when very young; we learn it from parents, from school and Sunday school as it is called, or by many more and varied means. We know because we were instructed to know that it is a form of asking our God to keep those that we love safe from the hazards of this life and the one promised. Not really being able at such an early age, to grasp the philosophy of what God is or means, we just take it on board from our elders, who in all probability have never stopped to think or question the proposition for themselves.

When growing older, we do begin to ask questions, as we go along the many and varied routes to knowledge, seeking that which life has to offer us. Some are still connected to that same belief system that they were given when very young but many others have since moved on. Some now, not connecting to any one particular way or belief but exploring the possibilities, in the same way yet different, which now present themselves to an inquisitive mind, as people are freelance and the many now make up their own minds about such things.

It brings to this of our living world a bigger outlook, as this is discussed many times over by an increasing number of people who are deeply interested in that of religions and beliefs. We do not have to have a fixed religion of any one kind in order to believe if wanting in any one thing we wish, we can change when ever we want our thoughts upon the matter.

Many prayers are said in and by groups, they choose a time and a place in order to meet those of the same beliefs. Some prayers are repetitive as they have been passed down through the centuries from times when prayer was confused with penitence instead of being a pleasant and spiritual experience. This attitude largely being inherited from those that belonged as they say, to holy orders with their strict discipline and severe view of this God they worshiped and the demands he placed upon mankind.

Many church buildings are set aside for people to gather, to say prayers and to talk of such subjects as the good in life, this bringing together people of like mind and principles. Some people hide behind this mask, not wanting to be seen as an individual with thoughts of their own so they dismiss them and carry on as they have done for many a year, relinquishing progress of thought in favour of the perceived safety of the philosophy of blind and obedient faith.

One always has options in life's ways, what wanting to believe in and what one should be doing in this of the enlightenment of now knowing so much more about this strange yet wonderful existence of which we are a part. We cannot shut ourselves away from evolution, it comes like a thief in the night, we not really knowing of its presence until it comes to the forefront with such a shock. So this of prayer and its making is really an individual thing that we do for self, knowing what to say and when to say it.

We do wonder at times who or what this God is or could conceivably be, where such an unlikely being resides and the purpose within our lives. We know we are, or so we have been told, in need of faith so that we may know the reason behind this God who is allegedly one that can make all things right for us, but in reality it is up to us what our prayers may be all about, how and when we put it over or not at all.

There can be but one that can answer to our deeds and that is self alone, no matter how many prayers we say, we are still that one person saying them in the ways we want

When many of my clients start a home based business, they often ask similar questions. Two often asked questions are how they can keep the IRS from classifying a business as a hobby and whether they should incorporate or form an LLC for the business or just operate it as a sole proprietorship.

Preventing Classification as a Hobby:

If your business incurs a loss, that loss can generally be deducted against your other forms of income, including wages, interest, dividends, rents, retirement income and your spouse's income if you file a joint return. If you have greater business losses than income for the year, you can even carry that loss back or carry it forward to offset income in other years.

It is therefore very important to run your business as a business and not like a hobby. One myth that I hear often is that if you don't show a profit in at least three out of five years, it is a hobby. Wrong! What that myth is referring to is the "safe harbor" that if you show a profit in at least three years in a period of five consecutive years, the I.R.S. will presume that you are engaged in a business and not a hobby.

What if you don't meet the safe harbor and have losses in three or more of the five years and even losses beyond the initial five years? You need to have documentation to prove that you entered into the activity for profit, even if the chance of making a profit is small. You must show this intent at the time you started your business.

Some of the ways to show that your motive is to make a profit is to do the things that profitable business people normally do in similar businesses. Create a business plan and income projections. Create or purchase marketing materials and business cards. Maintain a separate checking account and maintain a bookkeeping system for your business. Prepare annual income statements and a balance sheet. If you do not have prior experience in your business, document your education efforts. Work your business regularly. Work an hour or two a day and keep a log of your activities to document your efforts. I will cover mileage logs in the future which help show your activity.

Should I incorporate or form an LLC for my business or just operate it as a sole proprietorship?

I am only going to address the tax aspects of this question. Consult an attorney for the legal considerations such as limiting personal liability. For tax purposes, an LLC can elect to be treated as a corporation or "S" corporation.

I usually suggest that clients initially operate as a sole proprietorship and not consider tax aspects of incorporating until they start to make an annual profit of around $20,000. That is an arbitrary number that will vary from client to client. My reason for starting there is because if a sole proprietorship is incorporated, the sole proprietor must become an employee of the corporation in most situations. Payroll tax returns and annual tax returns will be required for the corporation, which adds additional costs.

There are some tax advantages to incorporating once a business starts showing a good profit. Let's assume a sole proprietor will make a $50,000 next year. Not only will he pay income tax on that amount, he will also pay self-employment tax of about 15%. If he incorporates and elects to be treated as an "S" corporation and the corporation pays him a reasonable salary (let's assume $30,000), there will be no self-employment tax and only the salary will be subject to FICA tax at about 15%. The excess of the $50,000 profit over the $30,000 salary will not be subject to either tax which would save about $3,000 in tax.

There are also many ways to deduct fringe benefits in a corporate structure that I will not cover at this time. The deductible is limited in many cases for owners and highly compensated employees.
