<p>Just like modern day roller-coasters can cause your heart to skip a beat when you think about getting on them, public speaking can appear scary. The reality though, is that it's fun and exciting. It gives you an adrenaline rush that leaves you feeling on top of the world.</p>
<p>2. It's easy to get started.</p>
<p>Pick a date. Pick a topic. Outline your ideas to include facts, figures, and examples. Contact your local adult education office, service organization (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.), or Chamber of Commerce to see if you can give your presentation. Show up and talk. It really is simple to get started.</p>
<p>3. It's a way to build stronger relationships with customers and potential customers.</p>
<p>When you present an informational seminar or instructional workshop to customers and potential customers they'll see you as the expert. They'll laugh when you tell them about the mistakes you've made and nod their heads in approval when you share your success stories. They'll see you as approachable when you talk with them one-on-one during a break or after the presentation. They'll share their ideas, concerns and questions (which you'll use to improve your services and/or product selections).</p>
<p>4. It will set you apart from your competition.</p>
<p>Public speaking is overwhelming and intimidating (okay, it's terrifying) to many people. But it also makes you visible. It allows you to offer information and assistance in a way that many of your competitors don't. At a workshop or seminar your customers know you are there to share information with them and answer their questions.</p>
<p>5. It's a change of pace from your everyday activities.</p>
<p>If you're like many small business owners or independent professionals you can easily get caught up in working in your business rather than on it. Developing and presenting workshops and seminars provides a change of pace. It allows you to focus your time and energy on meeting your customers' current and future needs while also building name recognition, expert status, and additional income streams.</p>
<p>6. It can provide additional income.</p>
<p>When you offer classes through your local adult education center you may get paid a small amount for each class. When you present your seminar at an association meeting you may earn a speaker's fee. When your workshop attendees need supplies, they can purchase them from you. When you have developed your speaking skills and your content is solid, you may even charge people to attend your seminars.</p>
<p>7. It can be the basis for creating information products (books, booklets, CDs, etc.).</p>
<p>As you prepare for your seminars and workshops you'll probably create handouts, worksheets, and resource lists that will help participants during the course. These items can be combined and retooled into booklets, books, and workbooks. You can record your presentation into audio or video format. These items will all help promote your business and produce additional income.</p>
<p>8. It will keep your knowledge current and your enthusiasm high.</p>
<p>When you offer informational seminars or instructional workshops you'll always be on the lookout for the latest improvements or advances in your field. You'll be aware of how current events impact your industry. You'll be on the cutting edge; but you'll also know when and why the old ways are the best ways.</p>
<p>9. It's a quick and easy way to create word-of-mouth buzz about your product or services.</p>
<p>People who attend your information packed seminars and workshops will talk about their experience before and after the event. They may invite friends with an interest in the subject matter to join them. When the topic arises in future conversations they'll talk about you and your workshop.</p>
<p>10. It's an important skill to develop for your personal and business' growth.</p>

<p>Booker T. Washington who had only managed to get a primary education that allowed his probationary admittance to Hampton Institute after his emancipation from slavery through the 1865 proclamation by Abraham Lincoln, proved such an exemplary student, teacher, and speaker that the principal and founder of Hampton Samuel C. Armstrong&nbsp; recommended him to Alabamans who were trying to establish a school for African Americans in their state to lead them in their effort.</p>
<p>But Washington preferred to&nbsp;become a teacher first in his home town in Tinkersville, West Virginia.&nbsp; He served there for&nbsp; three years. In 1878 he left to attend Wayland Seminary in Washington DC, but stayed on&nbsp;for only&nbsp;six months. In 1879 Armstrong asked him to return to Hampton Institute as a teacher. Washington did so.</p>
<p>In 1881, upon the&nbsp;recommendation of Hampton University founder Samuel C. Armstrong and Tuskegee's governing body, even though such positions had always been held by whites up until that time, he was hired as the first principal of a similar school being founded in Alabama,. the new normal school -teachers' college- in Alabama called Tuskegee Institute. It&nbsp;was founded under a charter from the Alabama legislature for the purpose of training teachers in Alabama.</p>
<p>They found the energetic and visionary leader they sought in Washington. Washington thus became the first principal of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. July 4, 1881,&nbsp; the first day of school at Tuskegee Institute, was a humble beginning, The new school was initially using space rented from a local church with two small buildings, no equipment, and very little money. The next year, Washington purchased a former plantation, which became the permanent site of the campus.&nbsp; He built it into a center of learning and industrial and agricultural training. in Tuskegee, Alabama. Tuskegee's program provided students with both academic and vocational training. The students, under Washington's direction, built their own buildings, produced their own food, and provided for most of their&nbsp; basic necessities. The Tuskegee faculty utilized each of these activities to teach the students basic skills that they could share with African American communities throughout the South.</p>
<p>Even though Tuskegee provided an academic education and instruction for teachers, it placed more emphasis on providing young black boys with practical skills such as carpentry and masonry.Under Washington's care both the school and Washington grew to be world famous, making lasting and profound contributions to the South and to the United States.</p>
<p>One of Booker Washingron's main problems was always finding enough money to keep the institution running. The support he received from the state was neither generous nor stable enough to build the kind of school he wanted. So he had to raise the money himself by going on speaking tours and soliciting donations. As head and founder of the&nbsp; Institute, he traveled the country unceasingly to raise funds from blacks and whites alike. Soon he became a well-known speaker. He received a lot of money from white northerners. For they were impressed with the work he was doing and his non-threatening racial views.He&nbsp;thus lured&nbsp;industrialists like Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller who would donate money on a regular basis.</p>
<p>Booker Washington spent the rest of his life improving the school so that when he died, in 1915 the Tuskegee Institute boasted 100 buildings, 1,500 students, a variety of programs and $2 million. By then Tuskegee's endowment had grown to over $1.5 million, compared to the initial $2,000 annual appropriation.</p>
<p>The institute illustrates Washington's aspirations for his race. For during his lifetime, many African Americans who were former slaves and who did not have an education were&nbsp; provided&nbsp; with opportunities to learn vocational skills and obtain an education. He thought former slaves would gain acceptance through education and financial independence. His theory was, that by providing these skills, African Americans would play their part in society thus gaining acceptance by white Americans. He believed that they would eventually gain full civil rights by showing themselves to be responsible, reliable American citizens.</p>
<p>In 1895, Washington was asked to speak at the opening of the Cotton States Exposition, an unprecedented honor for an African American. His Atlanta Compromise speech explained his major thesis, that blacks could secure their constitutional rights through their own economic and moral advancement rather than through legal and political changes. Although his conciliatory stand angered some blacks who feared it would encourage the foes of equal rights, whites approved of his views. Thus his major achievement was to win over diverse elements among southern whites, without whose support the programs he envisioned and brought into being would have been impossible.</p>
<p>Although not everyone agreed with Booker, he became a respected leader who helped many schools and institutions gain donations and support from the government and donors. From this position of leadership he rose into a nationally prominent role as spokesman for African Americans.</p>
<p>It was these non-threatening racial views that gave Washington the appellation "The Great Accomodater". He believed that blacks should not push to attain equal civil and political rights with whites. That it was best to concentrate on improving their economic skills and the quality of their character. The burden of improvement resting squarely on the shoulders of the black man. <p>Born and schooled in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Arthur Smith has taught English for over thirty years now at various Educational Institutions. He is now a Senior Lecturer of English at Fourah Bay College where he has been lecturing for the past eight years.</p>

<p>CTU courses are 300 dollars each, roughly, and it includes course materials, so basically it would be kind of like the cost of going to a   community college as a out-of-state student, which is my alternative.</p>

1.  Bachelor of Business.  Extra college classes to certify to teach.<br />
2.  I left retail.  I love kids and I now am on the same  schedule as my children.  No more nights, weekends etc trying to find child care.<br />
3.  Most: having kids who think they are dumb realize that they are smarter than they think.  Least: grading papers.<br />

<p><b>Setting the Scene: </b>The first time I ever saw him present was in September, 1983. I had just completed my fifth year of teaching and was one of 200 or so teachers attending the Fall Physical Education Leadership Conference in Reidsville, North Carolina.</p>
<p>The last time I saw him present was 20 years later - the start of the 2003-2004 school year. This master teacher-presenter hadn't changed much in 20 years; he still possessed his hyperactive high energy levels, his inspiring way of communicating to teachers, and his love for physical education.</p>
<p>"What a wonderful start for our annual district-wide staff development day," I was thinking to myself. It seemed that almost nothing has changed in the past 20 years with him.</p>
<p>His contagious enthusiasm quickly spread to the 100 or so physical education teachers attending our school district's annual Staff Development Day. Everyone seemed "pumped" with excitement. Even the older, more reserved teachers didn't seem to mind doing the "heart-healthy" dances that were presented!</p>
<p>"How many of you have had a good time so far?" the 66-year-old PE teacher-presenter asked as he motioned with his hands for us to sit down. Instantly, numerous folks raised their hands! Spontaneously, one teacher began to clap, then another, and soon the entire gym was filled with applause. Another small group of teachers in the center of the gym started talking and stood up together facing the presenter. In unison, each teacher in the group made a large circle shape with their arms high above their heads. The rest of the teachers in the gym followed the group's lead, soon everyone was standing - each with their arms in a large circle shape - a "standing O-vation."</p>
<p><b>"A Standing O" - </b>It was something the presenter had talked about earlier in the morning as a simple and quick way to recognize outstanding effort. This "thank you" seemed to take him by surprise. You could tell this gesture had a special effect on him, or so it seemed. After a minute or so, everyone sat back down as the presenter regained his composure and started to speak.</p>
<p>"Thank you all very much," he said walking slowly across the gym floor. "But you know, it's really like..." his voice instantly tapered off as he grimaced, slightly dragging his right foot behind. Instantly, everyone in the gym sensed something was not quite right. What's wrong with his leg? He grimaced again. It was as if he had a huge weight shackled to his right leg. Then he stopped and stood silently.</p>
<p><b>The Chains of Tradition: </b>"You know," he said with a sly smile, "In physical education, we have been dragging heavy 'chains of tradition' for too long. These 'chains of tradition' keep us from moving forward, from changing our methods of teaching. They're heavy and difficult to get rid of. They make us throw up our hands and say 'things will never change, this is the way things have always been.'"</p>
<p>"And the people who are saying 'things will never change' are right! Things will never change as long as you and I continue to drag this 'chain of tradition' around with us."</p>
<p>He continued, "Now, before we break for lunch at 12:00, I would like each of you to get into groups of threes and discuss among yourselves what 'chains of tradition' you have been dragging around."</p>
<p>What happened that day was a revelation to me!</p>
<p>You see, I now had a way to explain why Physical Education still seems to cling to the traditional ways of doing business. As I looked around to find two other teachers, I knew exactly what my 'chain' was and still is -- it's "grading."</p>
<p><b>Why Today's PE Doesn't Make the Grade! </b>In my 35+ year career as a physical education teacher, state-level administrator, and local Central Office Supervisor, I have one major regret - "I have done little to change the way we grade students in physical education." For me, physical education will finally "make the grade" when we begin to do the following four items:</p>
<p>1. Transition from traditional grading practices (ex: dressing out) to a standards-based model.</p>
<p>2. Re-design individual state standards so that there are no more than 15 "core outcomes" per grade level.</p>
<p>3. In the re-design effort, create a K-12 scope and sequence that is sequential, easy-to-understand, and simple to articulate.</p>
<p>4. Involve higher education - the colleges and universities that are preparing the next generation of future teachers.</p>
<p><b>The Virtual PE Administrator: </b>Over the past 2-3 years, I have been fortunate enough to work with a number of progressive school districts in addressing the above items. From this collaboration, we have been able to develop and create a new web-based physical education assessment and tracking program called the Virtual PE Administrator. These school districts are now starting to implement a program that will track and monitor individual student progress aligned to 12 grade-by-grade "core outcomes" from the time they enter kindergarten to graduating high school.</p>

<p>When teachers collaborate, they do so with the goal of investigating additional ways to support their students' literacy development. It is even more helpful and beneficial to collaboration if each teacher brings information about their classroom success and needs to the dialogue once they've experimented with reflective learning logs. Teachers can use such journals to document students' progress, explore questions and issues related to meeting students' academic needs, evaluate what works with their students, and plan for further instruction and assessment. These reflective writings provide a rich foundation for effective collaboration to take place.</p>
<p>Reflective Learning Logs</p>
<p>Teachers add to their professional growth by observing and reflecting on what goes on in their classrooms, and can then share their insights with other teachers through the process of collaboration. This acquired knowledge enables teachers to be more informed and to incorporate working theories that potentially match the instructional needs of their ELLs. Typically, reflective writing is an ongoing process whereby teachers rethink what happened in class, what worked and didn't work to meet their instructional goals, and how their teaching behaviors can change or improve.</p>
<p>Reflective Writing Techniques Promote Successful Collaboration</p>
<p>Reflective writing journals help enhance the process of collaboration by providing unique perspectives for ESL and ELL teachers as they endeavor to close the gaps in their students' reading proficiency levels in both smaller and larger general educational settings.</p>
<p>As teachers document student performance and related factors, they then have information to further reflect and plan how to meet student needs. Reflective learning may take an inquiry-based format, in which teachers ask themselves questions and then seek answers through collaboration with other teachers or experimenting with various instructional strategies and methods. The process of journal writing is not intended for quick and easy solutions, but rather to explore a reflective process of thinking. Reflective writing also allows teachers to make connections between issues they observe in the classroom and what they have learned through various professional development opportunities, such as in-service sessions.</p>
<p>All teachers can start using reflective learning logs in order to ask questions and isolate the issues facing their struggling readers. Once ELL teachers know how the issues influence their instruction, they can then begin the process of adapting the curriculum to meet the needs of ELLs.</p>
<p>Reflective Journals Helps Teachers Learn what Works</p>
<p>As teachers use their reflective writing to pinpoint areas of success in their day-to-day teaching, they can then use the reflective learning process as they plan and develop subsequent instruction to help their students close the gaps in reading proficiency. Important areas such as planning and development slowly became clearer for us when we presented ourselves with questions that were specific and geared to a certain content or practical area which needed additional clarification.</p>
<p>Teachers need to reevaluate their instruction and assessment and spend some time after lessons thinking more deeper about how to adapt the curriculum to carefully suit the needs of their struggling ELLs. Using specific subjects to help guide them in their thinking, teachers can more effectively evaluate the quality of their teaching and assessment. As the center of the inquiry process, reflective learning works similarly to an action research concept. Using Wallace's practice model of professional education/development, reflective teaching "can have a specific and immediate outcome which can be directly related to practice in the teacher's own context" (bibliographic information: Wallace, M. 1991. <p>In this respect, all teachers can benefit using reflective learning logs in order to begin to ask questions and focus on the issues facing their struggling readers. Once ELL teachers know how these issues influence their instruction, they can then begin the process of adapting the curriculum to meet the needs of ELLs.</p>
<p>Teachers can ask themselves questions about key areas such as specific aspects of lesson planning which will result in effective teaching, classroom management, and assessment, and use their reflective learning logs as a foundation for identifying instructional objectives and establishing goals.</p>

<p>Objective is where you can tick off the box that a person has achieved a skill or knowledge, for example, knowing the10 times table.  They can be marked as knowing them or not.  It's also helpful for the student because they know what they are aiming to get out of a class.  Non-objective is more investigative and subjective.  These are more difficult to determine whether a child knows a topic or not but requires observational assessment.  This is usually subjective and scores may vary according to who is marking the student.</p>

<p>&nbsp;Students are often confused about how to interpret GRE Scores.&nbsp; Common questions include: "What is a good GRE Score?" and "What GRE Scores do colleges require?"&nbsp; To answer these questions, it is important to understand the different components of the GRE Test and how GRE test scores are calculated.</p>
<p>The GRE Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are scored on a scale of 200-800, with 10 point increments. The GRE Analytical Writing section is scored on a 0-6 scale with half-point increments.&nbsp; Your scores on the Verbal and Quantitative sections are based on your performance on the questions you were given and on the total number of questions answered in the time allotted.</p>
<p>The verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE Test are administered in a "computer-adaptive testing" (CAT) format.&nbsp; The CAT format adapts the difficulty of the questions based on how a user answers the questions.&nbsp; An average level question is given first, and then more difficult questions are given if the first question is answered correctly, or easier questions are given is the first question is missed.&nbsp; The intent of the CAT approach is to adapt the questions based on the user's aptitude. With the CAT approach, you are not allowed to go back and change answers to previous questions, and you must answer each question to proceed.</p>

<p>The best way to understand your GRE TestScores is by comparing them to other students and seeing what your preferred colleges require.
