Do you want to start using stories in the preschool ESL classroom but don't know where to start? There are many great pre-k activities for ESL classrooms, including games, but it's also very important to not discount the power of stories. Whether you're reading a classic book, making up a story as you go along or designing a story specifically for a particular lesson, you'll want to be sure to include stories in the preschool ESL class every day.

One of the reasons why stories work so well in the ESL preschool classroom has to do with intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the theory that people are motivated by internal factors. Children of preschool age do not understand the external factors that might motivate an adult to decide to learn a second language, so as a teacher it's up to you to create a classroom that internally motivates them to participate in the activities and, ultimately, learn the language you are teaching.

Stories are perfect for teaching young ESL students because children already love stories and are already motivated at the thought of listening to one. In addition to that, when children listen to the stories, they are able to internalise the language structure and will eventually begin recognize words and phrases they hear in the stories. Besides, there are so many ways to use them in the classroom that the possibilities with stories are practically endless. Here are some possibilities on how you can use stories in your classroom:

Teach Vocabulary

Before you use a story in the ESL preschool classroom, you'll need to teach the students the key vocabulary words to they are able to follow the story. Thus the story can serve as a basis for drawing vocabulary words. It goes deeper than that, however. The students will not just "learn" the words, they will immediately see how the words are used and hear them in context of the language. This is so much more beneficial to the students than simply memorizing a list of words.

Vary Your Classroom Activities

Telling a story adds variety to your lessons in terms of content and pace. Preschoolers don't have a terribly long attention span, so you'll want to vary your activities throughout the class period. Changing your activities every five to ten minutes is appropriate for this age group - and that's a great length of time to spend telling a story. Furthermore, preschool students have a ton of energy, so you'll want to have some activities that allow them to burn this energy. To keep the class from getting out of control, use a story after a boisterous activity to allow everyone enough time to settle down before moving onto something else. Remember also that you can tell the same stories over and over again.

Be Creative

Whenever you tell a story allow your creativity show through. Have fun with it and go with the flow. Make animal sounds, change your voice, sing little songs and, most of all, use gestures. You might even be able to get some of your students to go along with you when it comes to animal sounds, songs and gestures.

Introduce Other Activities

Stories are a great jumping board for other activities. Here is just a sampling of activities you could do following a story:

* Give each student a picture that depicts the events of the story and have them line up in order of the events.

* Have the students come up with a title for the story. Allow as many titles as students who'd like to share one.

* Repeat quotes from the story and ask the students "Who said it?"

* Leave off the ending of the story and have the students predict what they think will happen. Then, read the ending of the story.

* Encourage the children to look for patterns in the story. Have them guess, for example, what the character will say if there is a pattern in what the character says.

* Teach them a song that goes along with the theme of the story.

* Teach them actions to go along with the songs.

* Let them act out parts of the story.

* Set up stations that allow them to dress up like characters in the story and do things the characters in the story did. So, if the characters in the story decorated cookies, give them some time to decorate cookies.

* Tell a story to introduce a new unit.

* Give the students three events in the story and ask them what came first.

* Have the students draw a picture about their favourite part of the story and then explain it to the class.

* Let the students tell about a similar experience they might have had.

Christians, do you think a preschooler should be homeschooled or in preschool?

I have a son who just turned four this week, they have vpk and I am looking into it. I live with my mother while I am getting my degree in elementary education, I have two more years to go. I have been with my son since he was born except for the occasional trip to the store, or my college to take a test or something like that. My mother works in the schools and insists that he needs to go to vpk from a teacher other than me to learn to take direction and socialize. I kind of agree, but he will be going four days a week if he goes, and for four hours a day. Isn't this alot to be away from his mother? He is only four, not fourteen. I feel like I will be letting him down and giving my motherly responsibilities to someone else, it is really making me sad. Should I just homeschool him and socialize through other supervised less time stressing activities? What is your opinion? We are Christian and I really want to do what is wanted by God.

That having been said, a Christian parent is to give their children an education in what the Bible teaches about Jesus regardless of whether they are going to a regular school or not.

Overseas Trained Teachers (OTT)

If you have qualified as a teacher in another country and you wish to continue a career in teaching in the UK, you will need to gain QTS (Qualified Teacher Status).

What are the restrictions for you if you do not hold QTS?

The law allows you to teach in the UK without gaining QTS for a total of four years. This time starts from the very first day you start teaching in a UK school. This is often called 'the four year rule'. Although this is possible, and teachers from overseas make a very valuable contribution to UK schools in this way, it is important that you are aware of, and learn of the benefits of obtaining QTS. If you wish to continue teaching outside of these four years, you will need to obtain QTS.

What is QTS?

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is required in England and Wales to become, and continue being, a teacher of children in the state and special education sectors. Similar statuses exist in the rest of the United Kingdom (Scotland and Northern Ireland), but under different names. The set of standards is issued by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and The Teacher Development Agency (TDA) is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the QTS process and allocates each assessing organisation with a number of QTS places.

Teachers must meet this criteria in order to gain QTS and evidence must be shown in a portfolio, against the requirements.

Why gain QTS?

Three simple reasons:

If you want to teach in the UK after the four years has expired

If you want to return to the UK to teach at a later date

If you need an extension to your Work Permit, Holiday Visa or Working Visa.

How do I obtain QTS?

An employment based programme is the quickest and easiest way to obtain QTS. This allows you to work in a teaching job as well as studying. It is sometimes possible to be awarded QTS without undertaking extra training by assessment only but the type and length of training depends on your qualifications and previous experience as a teacher.

What should I do if I am an overseas trained teacher?

In order to get the best advice on how to obtain QTS, it is strongly recommended that either before you arrive in the UK, or shortly after your arrival you:

Primary Teaching Oppurtuntities in Canada?

My wife is primpary school teacher in england and she have got QTS and now doing part time MA in education. We want to move canada and we were wondering if teaching standards are same over ther or are different? Could someone guide us as how can she apply for as primary teacher in Canada and does she need to do any study in canada or would they consider UK qualification satisfactory to apply for jobs?

The most important thing to know is that teachers are certified separately in each Canadian province. So for example the British Columbia College of Teachers certifies teachers in that province. Getting certification is quite a complex process. You should contact the appropriate certification body directly if you know which province you will reside in. We keep hearing about how wonderful it will be when students can learn 24/7, thanks to the advent or at least the dissemination of virtual learning environments, learning platforms, or whatever other name you wish to give them.

But what does this really mean, and what pressures does it place on teachers?

What does 24/7 learning mean?

The answer, to be precise, is nothing at all, on the simple grounds that we always have learnt 24/7 from the moment we appeared on the planet. After all, even when you're sleeping, your brain is still doing data processing. In other words, the term is a misnomer: what it should really be is 24/7 access.

Now, you may think that this is unduly pedantic, but it is, I believe, an important point to make. I was one of the trainers on a course for headteachers (principals) recently, and one of the headteachers said something along the lines of: "Why should we expect children to learn 24/7? Aren't they allowed to be children?"

If you take the view that children are always learning in some form or other, the question ceases to have meaning, or at least the impression of systems being set up solely to ensure that children never have a break from formal schooling is dispelled.

The idea of being able to enjoy - and I do mean enjoy - 24/7 access is really an idea about choice. If you know that you can check what your homework is at 6 am or 10 pm (parents willing, or unknowing, of course!), then the idea of what we might call a personalised learning style starts to become a reality. This, too, is an important idea, and not merely clever wording. Educationalists often talk about individual learning styles, and personalised learning, but they do not put the two together. Having access 24/7 enables you to find, and then conform to, your on personalised learning style or, if you like, personalised learning pattern.

For example, I do my most creative work in the morning or late at night. The afternoon is my low point, and so to optimise the use of my time I reserve the afternoons for the things that don't require much creativity: shopping, paying bills, answering routine emails and so on. I am aided in this by the fact that I have 24/7 access to most of the resources I need in order to do my work.

The benefits of 24/7 access can - and should - be extended to parents also. Parents should be able to see what homework their child has been set, and how s/he is doing in tests, any time they like. We now live in an age where the fact that a parent or carer is working shift work, and can therefore rarely attend a parents' evening to meet his child's teachers to discuss her work, should not matter as much as it used to. In fact, the technology is there to enable parents 24/7 access to assignments and marks, and it is becoming harder and harder for schools to bury their heads in the sand and try to carry on business as usual as if nothing has changed. The fact that many parents do not want or cannot have 24/7 access is not in itself an excuse for not making the facility available.

However, there are always at least two sides to every issue, and in the case of 24/7 access there are several points that need to be addressed if teachers are not to feel under immense pressure to be available 24/7.

o It should be axiomatic that 24/7 student access should not mean 24/7 teacher availability. Everyone knows this, but it isn't said - certainly not by those who have a vested interest in teachers being available 24/7 to meet students' and parents' demands!

o If assignments, students' grades, lesson plans, worksheets and so on are to be placed on the web to be accessible 24/7, a system must first be put into place to make this happen that does not rely on teachers physically uploading the materials or data and fiddling with access rights. These jobs should be undertaken by administrative staff or network technicians. Certainly in the UK, teachers now have the right to refuse to undertake such work.

o It's a good idea - in fact, virtually essential - for lesson plans and materials to be created and uploaded well in advance of when the teacher thinks they will be required. That really means right at the start of the school year. For that to happen, teachers must be given the time to do it. This could be achieved by teachers being given a week at the start of the term or semester before the students return to school after the summer break, ie have the students come in a week later. Alternatively, ask teachers to come in a week early - and pay them overtime to do so. And make sure that there is 24/7 access so that those teachers who prefer to work at 3 am on their materials can do so.

o Students and parents need to have their expectations managed. To be specific, they need to know that the fact that they can submit their assignment at 2am on Sunday morning, or send a message to Mrs Jenkins at 8pm on Friday night, does not entitle them to a reply any faster than would have been the case had they done those things during normal school hours. In other words, the customer-focus nature of 24/7 access is to do with convenience for the customer; it does not bestow the right to insist on some version of a 24/7 call-out system. After all, education is important, but it hardly fits into the category of emergency service!

There is no doubt that 24/7 access has many benefits, but the underlying systems must be planned and managed properly, and customers' expectations managed wisely.

How do I increase my math knowledge?

I hate the fact that I'm 26 years old and can't do anything above simple multiplication. I've been looking online through google for some written tutorials on math, but I keep comming accross worksheets with no explanations of how to solve the problems. I work at crappy ass Kinko's and need to get far FAR away from this company, but I notice as I'm looking throgh job ads that alot of the positions require a slightly higher level of math skills than I posess. I have next to no free time so I'll have to take the hard road and try to teach myself as best as I can, so if you know any resources that would be to a very busy man's benefit please let me know. Oh, I also hate to pay for things lol!! so, if you know any FREE help please lit that first.

You need to practice. Try going to your library and checking out some math textbooks. PreAlgebra, Algebra 1. Chances are, they will have examples, vocabulary, and a detailed lesson. Do some problems in the chapter review. If you're still unsure as to how to do it, you need to ask someone for a visual lesson.
Youtube is a great place to start! Type in what you wanna learn. Example: "Long Division Tutorial." You will find video lessons, and then after you get that, you can google for worksheets since you know how to do them, or you could message the creator of the video.

If you have little or no graphics design experience you may not know what to do to create a professional looking ezine or newsletter, and not one that screams, "I DID THIS ALL BY MYSELF!"

One way around this it to hire someone to create the newsletter for you. But not every small business owner has the funds for this. Still, a company newsletter is one of the best marketing tools you can create for your business. So try the following tips and develop a professional looking newsletter you'll be proud of:

1. Pick one font for headlines and subheads, another for text. A good combination is a bold sans serif headline font (like Futura ExtraBold Condensed or Helvetica Heavy or a modern-looking font like Meta, Moderna, or Officina San Serif) paired with a simple serif font (Times, Garamond or Garamond Condensed, Galliard, etc.) for text. Use a smaller italicized version of text font for photo captions.

2. ALL text should be the same size (12 point usually, or sometimes 10 or 11 point, depending on the font); use uniform sizes for heads and subheads--larger headlines for more important articles. Most page layout and word processing programs let you set up style sheets. Set up a style for text, headlines, subheads, captions, etc. This is a very easy way to lay out the newsletter, making sure all fonts and sizes are uniform.

3. Flush left/ragged right text looks best. Justified columns can leave weird looking spaces between words, and centered headlines, text, and ads tend to give the newsletter an amateur appearance.

4. Look at some newsletters. Find a design you really like; set your newsletter up the same way - same number of columns, same size margins, and same size sidebars on each page. Don't try to make each page have its own design. Pages should have a uniform look.

Follow these tips to create a short, simple newsletter at first. Over time, you can develop additional topics and columns for your newsletter. First, just learn the basics of creating a professional looking publication that can be used to help create a closer, ongoing relationship with your customers and clients.

McCain: "economy is strong" -- you think he has Alzheimer's?

the day the stock market nosedives almost as much as 9-11, huge banks are filing chapter 11 right and left, and mccain stands up and says the economy is 'strong'?!! i heard on the news last night he has said the economy is strong over 20 times just this year. Granted by his own admittance he is not good at economics but if you aren't good at something the safe thing to do is rattle off headlines, not say the exact opposite of the obvious. What could make him say something like this other than some kind of age-related mental thing?

Yes, the principles and fundamentals of our capitalistic society are strong! Checks and balances are normal. Bad decisions by corporate greed is sad but normal (been going on since the days of Rome). Unethical and unstable banks failing is normal (been going on for centuries).

However, to blame it all on Bush or to compare this to the S&L crisis of the 80's is economically immature and shows a great lack of business knowledge. I know Obama trys real hard and he wants to be a big boy at the presidential table but his inexperience is showing greatly. He can only get by so long on good looks and eloquent speeches.

Other groups would even include in their program alternative therapies like massage, acupressure, aromatherapy, and imagery.

These support groups have formulated specific and realistic goals, and these goals are directed towards the client for the relief of his or her condition. The achievement of these goals, however, is not only the sole responsibility of the people behind the anxiety self help groups. The clients should understand that the success of the therapy also depends on the level of their participation.

One of the chief goals that most support groups have for their clients is enhancing behavior change. This is a specific goal that would greatly reduce the extremes in anxiety levels. In this goal, the activities included are the following:

How do I go about attaining my teacher's certification if I have a Bachelors in Biology?

First of all I am in New Jersey
I would like to become a Biology teacher (preferably for elementary school). In NJ, I have seen that it is possible to teach elementary science (without having to do all subjects).

There are several programs that help teachers. Try looking into Alternative Certification Programs or even Master's and Certification programs in your areas. Check what the requirements are for your specific state. If you teach fourth or fifth grade, i believe you can just teach science. I teach in Texas so it is a little different here. Here you have to be certified EC-4 to teach elementary. You also have to teach all subjects. I hope this helps.

i heard its really fun over there and the school work is really easy and there's no homework. i know you have to get into trouble to get there, but what kind of trouble do you have to get into to get there, without getting a ticket or anything else. And please don't reply something like "you dont want to go to that school. its bad" because i do wanna go to that school for like 30 days only.

LICENSING DESIGNATION

Florida first approved the Accredited Claims Adjuster designation in 2003. This designation provided the first and original exemption from the state licensing examination. The course became available as a distance learning course through Florida Insurance University in Partnership with the University of Central Florida in 2004. One out of four adjuster licenses in Florida have been approved using the ACA Designation.

Although other providers are now offering claim adjuster designations, over 250 insurance and adjusting companies use the ACA Designation for licensing resident and non-resident adjusters. The ACA Website may be located at http://www.ce.ucf.edu/insurance

The ACA Designation consists of a series of open-book, multiple choice tests and a written assignment. Students will learn to read and research policy questions, identify claim issues and, at the conclusion of the course, will received a University of Central Florida certificate of completion which will excuse them from the state licensing exam.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Every FL adjuster is required to complete 24 hours of CE every two years to retain licensure. The 24 hours must include state approved courses for 2 hours-Ethics; 10 hours-Law; 12-hours-Optional.

For most young people, university residences is essentially their first place, that is to themselves, well, normal except floor of a partner or two. I came with a list of seven items that will make your stay more comfortable.
