These days, children have become much more sedentary than previous generations. Some of the reasons for this have been the widespread availability of video games (ie Wii, PS3, etc), the Internet and even remote controls have all played a part in keeping kids from exercising. One of the best ways to get kids outside and KEEP them outside (besides locking the doors!) is to construct a playhouse for them, and the best choice is to build a wooden playhouse.

Now why would one choose wood as the material? The main reason is the durability wood has over materials like metal (which can rust over time) and plastic (can degrade in the sun if not UV protected). If properly protected, a wooden playhouse can last for decades! Do you have active kids with great imaginations? A wooden construction can easily withstand all the punishment kids can dish out over the years.

Another reason is the environmental one. If the wood eventually rots, it is merely returned to the soil, or it can be cut up and used for other purposes (firewood anyone?).

When assembling the playhouse, working with wood can be much easier than trying to drill through metal. Working with plastics can also be a bit messy. Wood also has the advantage that it can be easily cut to size. Although other materials can be cut as well, it is far easier to properly finish a piece of wood than a piece of plastic or metal

What if you move house? A wooden playhouse, if properly constructed, can be easily disassembled and reassembled numerous times. Being able to disassemble the wooden playhouse and reassemble in the new home might be the quickest way of getting the kids more comfortable with the new surroundings.

In all, although there are advantages to constructing a playhouse with other materials, such as metal or plastics, the advantages for wood outweigh it's perceived disadvantages. When thinking about building your kids' playhouse, choosing wood for the main building material is the most logical choice.

If you are stuck for ideas for your playhouse design, read my blog by clicking here. You'll find lots of ideas, not only for wooden playhouses, but other woodworking projects!

I need help on amazon?

I am a student and i need the eighth edition of Economics by Roger A. Arnold. On amazon I found this:

Economics Eighth Edition (Custom) (Paperback) by Roger A. Arnold (Author)

all i want to know is what "custom" means. Thanks

When a textbook is a "custom" edition it means that it has been customized to a specific school's specifications. This can mean that examples and questions could be different from the standard publication or extra notes or workbook section could have been added...or it might be almost identical to the standard edition, possibly with only the addition of the school's name to the cover or title page. If the book was not intended for use specifically in the class you are taking at your school then I would avoid a custom textbook, it will just end up causing you problems since there is no way of knowing when you're buying it secondhand what changes have been made.

The function of these custom text is basically to make money for the school (they receive royalties for each copy sold) and to increase sales for the publisher by making secondhand sales of their texts essentially impossible (some even put a statement on the book itself, like Gideon bibles, that they are not to be bought or sold used).

Here are a couple of articles that explain what the deal is with custom textbooks if you're want to know more.

Hope that helps. Cheers.

Just like preschools have centers, you can create your own centers in whatever space you have. Centers are collections of materials, games, and objects in specific curriculum areas that help encourage learning in a particular area. Some areas include art, music, dress up, reading, home, puzzles and blocks, math, and computers.

Centers can be shoe boxes of different items and games or large sections of the bedroom, playroom, or family room. For those that live in climates with extremes that do not allow outside play, so outside things can be brought indoors like small slides or climbers. Depending on your space, indoor play can look like a preschool or be fit into a small section of your house.

Here are some examples of things you can do to create you own centers for your preschooler.

1. A home center (even for boys!)- have a small kitchen/grill, ironing board, babies, and even a small table for children to pretend to be adults. Role playing is an important part of brain development and language development. Play with your child, have tea, make dinner. Interact with your child in their world.

2. Dress up Center- Again, the importance of role playing. Every child can have an adult pair of shoes, an old shirt or night gown, or even some small sized dress up costumes. This is a great place to use old Halloween costumes!

3. Reading Center- Provide a variety of books and magazines for kids. Books should be about real things like trucks, dinosaurs, bugs, and animals, and fantasy stories. Books should be available for children to reach without asking. You can also include books on tape/CD with a small CD player or cassette player with headphones. You may need to keep this up and away if your child does not know how to operate the player or does not know how to handle CD's. Remember to offer these occasionally if they do not ask.

4. Puzzles and Blocks Center- Kids love puzzles and blocks, parents don't love puzzles and blocks. Yes, they make a mess, but a child that can get to puzzles and blocks freely without asking, will play with puzzles and blocks. Make rules about how many can be out, clean up when you are done, and if they need help they ask.

5. Math Center- Have cubes and shapes that your child can play with without rules. They will stack the cubes, count the shapes, sort the shapes, and make patterns. Another great tool is called a Geoboard. The child uses rubber bands and makes shapes and pictures. You could also use a child's loom to do this. Puzzles with cut out numbers can also be included in this center.

6. Music Center- Have a variety of instruments, purchased or created, for your child to experience. You can also have music playing through free time play if your child likes music, or have the CD player available for them to use if they can. With the amount of downloadable music and electronic devices, your child may be more technologically advanced than you think!

7. Computer Center- If your child has access to a computer that may be something they choose to play with during their free time. At 4 years old, children can learn to manipulate a mouse and play games on the internet or through software on your computer. Educational software and online activities are great for your child to learn academic and language skills. Monitor the time on the computer, just as you would television time to make sure your child is not consumed with being on the computer.
