Just like preschools have centers, you can create your own centers in whatever space you have. Centers are collections of materials, games, and objects in specific curriculum areas that help encourage learning in a particular area. Some areas include art, music, dress up, reading, home, puzzles and blocks, math, and computers.

Centers can be shoe boxes of different items and games or large sections of the bedroom, playroom, or family room. For those that live in climates with extremes that do not allow outside play, so outside things can be brought indoors like small slides or climbers. Depending on your space, indoor play can look like a preschool or be fit into a small section of your house.

Here are some examples of things you can do to create you own centers for your preschooler.

1. A home center (even for boys!)- have a small kitchen/grill, ironing board, babies, and even a small table for children to pretend to be adults. Role playing is an important part of brain development and language development. Play with your child, have tea, make dinner. Interact with your child in their world.

2. Dress up Center- Again, the importance of role playing. Every child can have an adult pair of shoes, an old shirt or night gown, or even some small sized dress up costumes. This is a great place to use old Halloween costumes!

3. Reading Center- Provide a variety of books and magazines for kids. Books should be about real things like trucks, dinosaurs, bugs, and animals, and fantasy stories. Books should be available for children to reach without asking. You can also include books on tape/CD with a small CD player or cassette player with headphones. You may need to keep this up and away if your child does not know how to operate the player or does not know how to handle CD's. Remember to offer these occasionally if they do not ask.

4. Puzzles and Blocks Center- Kids love puzzles and blocks, parents don't love puzzles and blocks. Yes, they make a mess, but a child that can get to puzzles and blocks freely without asking, will play with puzzles and blocks. Make rules about how many can be out, clean up when you are done, and if they need help they ask.

5. Math Center- Have cubes and shapes that your child can play with without rules. They will stack the cubes, count the shapes, sort the shapes, and make patterns. Another great tool is called a Geoboard. The child uses rubber bands and makes shapes and pictures. You could also use a child's loom to do this. Puzzles with cut out numbers can also be included in this center.

6. Music Center- Have a variety of instruments, purchased or created, for your child to experience. You can also have music playing through free time play if your child likes music, or have the CD player available for them to use if they can. With the amount of downloadable music and electronic devices, your child may be more technologically advanced than you think!

7. Computer Center- If your child has access to a computer that may be something they choose to play with during their free time. At 4 years old, children can learn to manipulate a mouse and play games on the internet or through software on your computer. Educational software and online activities are great for your child to learn academic and language skills. Monitor the time on the computer, just as you would television time to make sure your child is not consumed with being on the computer.

This September thousands of children will start Kindergarten. For many this will be their first exposure to formal education. Kindergarten is no longer just a place to play or an extension of preschool. Serious learning goes on in Kindergarten, granted it is hidden within a lot of fun. Naturally you want your child to be as prepared as possible before the big "First Day of School". Follows are some fun and educational activities for the summer before Kindergarten.

Math Activities - The great thing about five-year-olds is that they are always ready to learn new games and as long as they're having fun, they don't realize they're learning too. In Kindergarten, students learn about counting (forward and backward), counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, putting things in order (first, second, third), money and telling time to the hour.

Teaching a child to count simply requires repetition. Try to fit counting into every activity. Count pages of books, pieces of candy, number of toys, etc. There are loads of books out there about counting as well as some good games for small children. Cherry-Oh! has always been one of my children's favorites. The Internet is also a wonderful source of free math activities including free printable play money to practice with.

Science Activities - Obviously five-year-olds aren't interested in learning boring old lab experiments nor are they appropriate for young children. Luckily science is everywhere in the world around us. Kindergartens will be learning basic facts about plants and animals, sorting objects based on physical characteristics, light shadow, magnets, weather and the five senses. A perfect activity to teach kids about plants is to let them grow their own small plant - sunflowers and marigolds are hardy and easy to grow. A trip to the zoo is a good interactive activity to learn about animals while the library and the Internet can provide information on animals not found locally. During clean-up or crafts activities, your child can practice sorting. Ask your child to put all the round toys away first or all the blue toys. Eventually work up to characteristics like soft/hard, and smooth/rough. Teaching your child about magnets can be easy too. If you have a refrigerator magnets (not fancy ones) or home office magnets, collect items around the house that are picked up and some items that are not picked up by a magnet. Place everything on the table in front of your child. Before your child uses the magnet on each group of objects, have your child guess what will happen. Borrow some books from the library about the four seasons and the weather that goes along with them. Every morning, ask your child to look outside and tell you what the weather is like. You can draw or trace and cut out picture symbols representing each season and ask your child to match the object with the right season. Actually you can probably find print-outs online for each season.

Music Activities - Music activities are the most fun of all. If your five-year-old is anything like other five-year-olds, they love to make noise! Most libraries now let people borrow music and videos as well as books. Borrow some music of famous composers. I'm sure you can also find online clips of classical, opera, folk, jazz, and other types of music. Spend the summer creating your own "orchestra." Create drums from empty containers, symbols from pan lids; you can make maracas, guitars, chimes and horns. You may need to pick up some basic materials but most of the items you most likely already own.Sharing these activities with your child won't only better prepare your five-year-old for Kindergarten; it will also make the summer unbelievably fun.

Imagine the convenience of gifts, crafts or decorations you can "whip up" from home, using little more than your computer, printer and a handful of paper. Is the meteorologist calling for a rainy day? Are you dreading an afternoon of children going stir-crazy, wishing they were outside? Or perhaps you just remembered that it's your best friend's birthday, or the boss is stopping by for a drink in 45 minutes.

The crafting resources available on the World Wide Web are almost limitless. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can navigate to printable paper crafts for just about every occasion. Print out a Father's Day card and have the kids add the finishing touches. Find thematic place cards or wineglass markers for your next holiday table. Select a gift box template to assemble by hand and hold your choice of edible goodies.

While the kids may fight over their turn on the computer, a few minutes of guided searching using your family's favorite search-engine can turn up armloads of crafts for kids too. A great place to start is by typing in the keyword "printables" or the phrase "printable paper crafts" in your search window. Try narrowing your search with the name of your child's favorite cartoon or current hobby. Here are just a few of the creative and fun crafts out there waiting to be discovered online:

*Elaborate origami projects

*Fun hats & masks

*Toys

*Paper dolls

*Coloring pages

*Mobiles

For avid scrap-bookers, there is a wealth of patterned paper that you can print from home. Tags, fonts, borders, clip art, printable stickers, and more are also readily available.

For classroom teachers, online templates can be printed in black and white, making them easy to mass-produce for the classroom. Some sites also offer reproducible materials with no copyright concerns.

One of the wonderful things about printable paper crafts is that many are free or can be had for a very reasonable price. Locating crafts on the web also saves you a trip to the art store, card shop, or teacher's resource center, thus guarding your valuable time.

With the high quality of printing available to the general public by today's desk-top printers, your completed paper crafts can look polished and professional. What's more, even if your first attempt turns out less-than-perfect, it's easy to print out one more copy and try, try again!

To make the most of your online crafting experience, here are a few tools you'll want to consider having on hand for that rainy day:

*An ample supply of white computer paper

*A pack of white cardstock for projects requiring a stiffer surface

*Scissors

*Tape & glue

*A small table-top paper cutter

Printable paper crafts are one of the true goodies that the internet has made possible. In the case of each craft out there, someone else has already done the hard work of design. Why reinvent the wheel? Take advantage of the treasure-trove of cards, decorations, toys and more available at your fingertips.

The idea behind "time lapse photography" is take a series of images or short segments of video over a set interval of time. Combine these images together to make a slow event happen faster, or a fast event happen slower.

One fun way to watch a solid turn to a liquid is to build a miniature snowman in a pan, set up a camera, and begin taking regular photos throughout the melting of the snowman. With a miniature snowman it only takes about an hour or so to completely melt.

If you don't have snow to build a miniature snowman, you can do this same activity with a couple ice cubes or a bowl of ice cream or a popsicle.

This activity works best if you have a tripod to put the camera on so there isn't movement.

There are also video cameras that have a time lapse mode. This is the simplest way to do this. You plug in the camera, set the time mode, and then come back later to see the results.

Once the snowman has melted, import the photos or short video clips into a movie software program. Then have children voice over with descriptions of what is happening in the state of matter change. Or, for a more creative twist, document what the snowman is thinking during the melting process!

To show the liquid changing to a gas you can set up the camera along with a hot plate. Put a shallow pan of water on the hot plate. With this you will want to take photos at a faster rate, such as one per minute. Then you will capture the water begin to boil, the steam rising, and then the pan emptying. Be careful at the end as the empty pan will begin to burn!

You can use one set of clips for the whole class and then have the students work in teams of two to add the voice documenting the experience. It is interesting to see how different the movies can be with everyone starting with the same footage.

States of matter become much more interesting when students can teach others and document the changes through time lapse photography.
