It's amazing to me how interested people are in bees and honey. When I meet people for the first time and they find out I'm a beekeeper, there are always questions. Why do honeybees swarm? What's happening to our bees? Are they really in danger? How do bees make honey? Why do bees make honey?

When I get phone calls about removing bees, people say they have a swarm, a nest or a hive. The first few times I was told that there was a hive in someone's backyard, I imagined it was a square wooden box painted white which someone had left there.

In fact, what people mean is that there is a large cluster of bees somewhere and they would like me to deal with them. The difference between a swarm, a nest and a hive is quite significant.

A hive is really the container in which the bees live. Man has invented the removable frame hive. You often see them in fields and orchards, white painted wooden boxes, sometimes on pallets. Bees naturally build their honeycombs inside a cavity, a hollow tree, an upturned plant tub or a sprinkler control box. These can be regarded as hives although I tend to think the only real hive is one that has been built expressly for the purpose of containing a bee colony. If their nest is in an enclosed space they are able to air-condition it, warming it up if it's too cool and cooling it down on hot summer days.

A honeybee nest is the combs, brood, eggs, honey and of course all the adult bees which make up the colony. It's what the bees build inside the hive, although occasionally in very warm areas they build their nest in an exposed place, perhaps just protected from the elements by overhanging branches. As Winnie-the-Pooh said, "They might, or they might not, you never can tell with bees!"

A swarm is a big cluster of bees, in the order of 20,000 individuals, and almost always with just one queen bee. It is a transient thing. When a colony of honeybees become too crowded in their hive, they create a new queen. Just before the new queen emerges from her cell, the old queen leaves the hive and flies off with about half of the worker bees. Soon after leaving the hive, they congregate somewhere, often on the branch of a tree. They cluster there, sometimes just for a matter of a few hours, sometimes for days. Scouts are sent out to look for a suitable location for the new nest.

Once they find a suitable location, they take off flying in what looks like a haphazard or random cloud and then they drift away to the new site. Within 20 or 30 minutes they will enter the hive and almost immediately the workers will leave on foraging flights. They collect pollen and nectar in order to fuel the workers as they begin the task of building honeycombs in preparation for the queen to begin laying eggs so that a new colony will be created.

How much to support family of 5 in Nakuru Kenya?

I am sending money to support a family of 5 in Kenya (2 adults, 13 year old boy, 5 year old boy and 1 year old girl). My mother-in-law met them as a missionary and we are committed to their support.

We send $300 USD per month for food and other items, and also pay for the secondary education of the older boy. How much does $300 USD pay for in Nakuru in 2008?

Wish I had met your mother in law before she met them. 300 usd is an O.K. amount but when one get used to a certain amount they always want more .Your heart is in the right place and I hope this family don't become totally dependant on your generosity but instead use the money sensibly to help them stand on their own feet which can sometimes be hard in Kenya. They should be made aware that they should find their own solutions to any problem and not come knocking on your door .I am Kenyan born living in the U.K. and every time I go back on holiday people approach me with amazing stories which are heart breaking and they always promise to pay me within a few days but Houdini is still alive in Kenya.300 usd is not a big amount but just keep track of it.
