English Language Teaching and learning methodology and didactic approaches have been in an almost constant state of flux since the advent of the Grammar - Translation method documented by German-American anthropologist Franz Boas and the Danish linguist Otto Jespersen during the early 20th century. Each of the English language teaching and learning methodology and didactic approaches of past decades has contributed to the state of the art that now exists. Here are a few key contributors to ELT.

Past Trends in ELT

Approximately every decade a new approach or methodology comes into vogue. Audio-lingual method, TPR, Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), Direct method, the Natural approach and the Communicative approach have all had their heydays. As elements of Computer-Aided Language Learning (CALL) began to grow, the very need for human teachers came briefly into question. Suddenly, everyone wanted to get "plugged in" like the hero in the movie "Matrix" and learn everything instantly. From Piaget to Pimsleur, ever widening facets of language and learning have been ladled upon our world. Many theorists, linguists, language researchers, educational psychologists and a sea of teachers have contributed to our knowledge and understanding of the language teaching and learning processes. A few of the many major theories, events and trends which shaped ELT during past decades include:

o Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences opened the way to more diversity of activities focused on the students themselves and their innate skills, preferences and abilities.

o Student-centered teaching and learning-based courses, texts and programs developed at an increased rate.

o Noam Chomsky's theory of Transformational Generative Grammar gave us greater insight into language learning vs. language acquisition and of structural linguistics.

o Stephen Krashen et al provided us with five hypotheses to deepen our insight into language acquisition and learning

o Psychologists Roger Sperry contributed the theory of Dual Psychology which explained our two innate brains and Paul MacLean's Triune brain model postulated the three layers of depth to our thinking and actions

o Hermann's Brain Dominance Model allowed us improved understanding of how personality characteristics, learning styles and language learning integrate.

o Several well-validated texts emerged in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia as international and regional benchmarks for EFL curriculum.

The listings could easily go on and on as there are many significant contributions that could be noted here. Each of the English language teaching and learning methodology and didactic approaches of past decades has contributed in part to our understanding and applications of English as a foreign or second language. The Total Physical Response of Asher put movement and motion into language learning getting students out of their desks and into the flow, for example. The article "Predictions of Trends in ELT for 2006: What to Expect in the Upcoming Year" will discuss continuing developments we might expect.

what are the best ways to teach 3-5 year old spanish kids english?

as a summer job, i have to spend 30 minutes a day with spanish children teaching them english. what are the best games or activities to do this?

Talk to them in English.

Read to them. Find books that are bilingual -- English/Spanish. Read BOTH sets of text to them. Honor their native language as much as the language you want them to acquire.

Also, find books that have characters they see on TV or TV programs that promote literacy -- Clifford, Dora, Reading Rainbow, Follow the Lions, etc.

Have them help you learn Spanish so they see that learning works both directions. If you already know Spanish, have them reinforce what you already know. Question your own learning, and let them teach you.

House prices in the UK have been rising at phenomenal rates. However many economist predict in the future house prices could fall. If this were to occur what would be the economic implications and should the government do anything about it?

Arguments for government intervention to prevent house price falls

1. House prices tend to be volatile, this is because Supply and demand are inelastic (if price changes people keep buying them). Also the housing market is subject to speculation, people may buy houses during house price growth to try and profit, however if house prices fall these speculators will be inclined to sell, causing a bigger crash in house prices. Therefore any fall in house prices could have significant consequences for the economy.

2. House prices can adversely affect the rest of the economy. For example if house prices rise quickly then it can cause inflationary pressures to build up leading to a boom and bust economic cycle. If there is a house price crash this will leave many home owners with negative equity. (This means that the house is worth less than what they bought it for.) Therefore this will significantly reduce consumer confidence and therefore a reduction in consumer spending leading to lower growth and possibly a full blown recession.(negative economic growth for 2 quarters)

3. The housing market has a significant impact on the economy, because over 75% of households are home owners and mortgage repayments are a significant part of people's income. Housing is the biggest form of wealth therefore the negative consequences should not be underestimated.

The fall in house prices could also lead to a negative multiplier effect, where the final fall in GDP is bigger than the initial because of the bandwagon effect.

4. Preventing a crash in the housing market will help prevent people have their home's being repossessed. This is because with negative equity and high interest payments people would be unable to pay off their debts.

However there are arguments against the government trying to prevent a housing crash.

1. Firstly it is difficult to predict future house price inflation. For a long time people have argued house prices are overvalued but house prices continue to rise. Therefore it is hard to judge whether house price changes are due to pure speculation or have good fundamental reasons.

2. Housing is a private good, there are alternatives like renting a house.

3. If house prices are overvalued then there are benefits of letting their prices fall. Because it will help first time buyers be able to afford to buy a house, at the moment many key public sector workers are unable to buy. Cheaper house prices would increase efficiency of the economy and increase geographical immobility e.g. easier to buy houses in London.

4. A fall in house prices would reduce house price speculation therefore in the future house prices would be more stable.

5. It is difficult for the government to intervene in the housing market. Interest rates could be cut. But if the MPC cut interest rates it may conflict with other objectives like the governments inflation target of CPI= 2% +/-1

Conclusion there are significant costs to the economy of falling house prices. Therefore if possible the government should seek to avoid house price volatility, however due to the nature of the housing market it is quite difficult in practise to prevent falling house prices once they occur. This is because the government only has limited tools to prevent this. The best option is to try and reduce house price volatility through meeting supply constraints and making mortgages less sensitive to changes in interest rates. i.e. more fixed rate mortgages.

Different Teaching Styles

Different Teaching Styles Different Teaching Styles

One trend in recent years was student input into classroom rules and consequences. The premise is that the students help to create the classroom environment by assisting in choosing the rules, rewards, and consequences. If the students have a vested interest in making the process, the thought is that they will be more likely to abide by the parameters they have set. This is a great idea to use in any classroom from K-12. Students do enjoy having a say in their education and this is an easy way for the teacher to allow for some flexibility and decision-making. An important factor is that while the teacher does ask for input from the students, in the end, she or she can sway the students to the most important concepts. All in all, the students do know what should be involved and the consequences are usually tougher than the instructor would have picked from the beginning!

Another k-12 education trend involves the use of student portfolios to track student work. With the time investment that was required, many districts have backed off and allowed individual teachers to decide whether or not the student portfolios were worth the time and effort involved. The idea is to collect student work throughout the year and use it is a basis for students to reflect and see their growth. Many districts also asked that the portfolios be used during parent teacher conferences as evidence of learning taking place. There were no specific parameters to the portfolios in many cases so the level of complexity and attractiveness varied greatly from teacher to teacher.

While all k-12 education trends come and go, it is important for districts to realize that teachers have individual teaching styles, much as every student has a different learning style. Not all trends will "speak" to all teachers; therefore that is why the latest beginning of the year new idea dropped down fro above will not work for the entire district. It may very well be a phenomenal tip that will work in wonderful ways for part of the staff, but perhaps not so well for others. Maybe the new start of the school year meeting should be to allow teachers to sort through all the recent trends and self-reflect on what will work best with their instructional methods to create a toolbox of effective strategies. Only then will districts have instructors that are ready to show others what great test scores look like!

Concerning a child repeating a grade in elementary: placement w/same teacher again or different?

I could be wrong, but it just seems like it'd be ideal to give this child a bit of a different experience, as all teachers have their own individual teaching styles. As well as giving the child an opportunity to develop a teacher/student relationship with another teacher.
Also, wouldn't it seem that the child might harbor resentful feelings toward the teacher who held him or her back?? Or perhaps feel as though they failed to meet this person's expectations and therefore feel "defeated" by this particular teacher?

A different teacher, definitely is the best choice.
