The iPod can be a wondrous device. It is smaller than a deck of cards (or a pack of gum depending on your model), and you can pop in your headphones at any time to listen to music. On a daily basis, we might use it while driving, walking, exercising, relaxing, or throwing a party. An iPod is even more useful while traveling. Unfortunately, there are also some drawbacks to this. This article will discuss some of the pros and cons of travelling with an iPod.

PROS

1. Block out annoying people

This is especially useful if you are flying on a plane. Some people don't bring any entertainment with them onto a long plane ride. Instead, they want YOU to be their entertainment. So they'll attempt to talk to you about the latest celebrity gossip and their husband's grandmother whom they are going to visit. If you are a naturally social person who likes to talk about these things, then you are in luck. Otherwise, simply pop in your headphones and you can tune them out. This method works best if you combine it with closing your eyes. Most people won't engage you if you have headphones on. You can even put your headphones on without any music. Other people won't know that you can still hear them, and they won't bother you.

2. Improve your mood

One of the most amazing things about music is its ability to improve your mood. If you are feeling stressed out from the hassles of travel, simply fire up some of your favorite music. This can be extremely comforting. Long lines and heavy traffic will be less of an issue for you when you can put on your favorite music and just zone out.

3. Educational

Music isn't the only thing you can listen to on your iPod; you can also listen to audio books and other educational programs. An audio book is a great way to catch up on the latest bestseller even if you don't have time to sit down and read. If you are traveling to an unfamiliar area, you can often buy a virtual tour guide audio program. You can walk around Manhattan while a soothing voice describes all the landmarks around you.

CONS

Despite all the great things about traveling with an iPod, there are some drawbacks you should keep in mind.

1. It can be rude

The first benefit we talked about was how you can use the iPod to block out annoying people. Unfortunately, this has a flip side. When you DO want to talk to someone else, they can be turned off by the fact that they are only receiving half of your attention. You may need to ask them to repeat themselves because you couldn't hear them over your music. If you are at a checkout counter, a grocery store, or anywhere else where you might need to interact with people, you might want to consider putting your iPod away.

2. You'll miss out on the new environment

One of the greatest benefits of traveling is that it gets us out of our everyday bubble and allows us to experience life from another perspective. However, if you're listening to the same music that you listened to when you were back at home, then you haven't left your bubble! You're missing out on the sounds of nature, the bustling city streets, and the children playing on the playground as you walk by. These are the sounds of life, and you're missing out on them if you've always got your headphones on.

3. Anti-Social

It's not just that wearing your headphones all the time is rude, you'll also miss out on a lot of everyday sociality. There's a good chance that when you walk down the street with your headphones on, you rarely meet anyone new. You won't be able to chat with new people in line at the coffee shop or that interesting person sitting on the park bench next to you. If you never take your headphones out, there's a good chance you'll never meet anyone new ever again!

Like most things in life, a good balance must be struck when it comes to using an iPod when traveling. It can offer many benefits such as relaxation and education. It can also distract us from our new environment and keep us trapped in our own little bubble. If you keep the above tips in mind, however, you can definitely maximize the benefits of your iPod while eliminating many of the drawbacks. One final tip to keep in mind is that it is important to leave your travel destinations better than when you arrived. That means always throwing away your trash. It's easy to find a commercial trash can if you're willing to look around for one. Often they will be in the form of a metal trash can.

Could a new religion be developed?

An amalgamation of several different religions to create this new religion. This is a hypothetical situation of course for the actual religions to do this they would have to renounce some of their most precious teachings of thousands of years, Scientology excluded. But could some of the following schools of thought get together, people like scholars of divinity, philosophers, scientists, doctors, rappers, Christians, Hindu's, Rasta's etc and then achieve with thousands of hours of arguments this idyllic religion where it is agreed there is one God, we have a soul it is eternal and our actions do determin what will happen after this life.

Are those 3 things not already taught to us anyway by most religions in some form or another? Or do we need a science fiction writer for such an undertaking?

I was posting my questions in Religion and Spirituality, but I think its more of an appropriate question for philosophy?

Of course it can be done, and has. What you're discussing has a name -- it's called "syncretism." Here's an interesting article for you to read.

Hope this helps.

Is there a best way to practice on your guitar? Of course you have to make your practice sessions effective but could there be a way to practice that is more effective than other ways?

There are many principles involved in an effective practice session and I think some of these are:

1. A motivation founded on a love and passion for the music you can produce on the guitar.

2. An acceptance of the fact that you must practice on that technical level you have reached.

3. A working knowledge of muscle tensions and how to minimize them when you play and how to work on reducing them when you don't play.

What shall we do until we find the most effective way to practice on the guitar?

When I was studying music at an academic level I many times had the question messing around in my mind about the ultimate method for practicing on my guitar and other instruments I played.

A well renowned jazz tenor saxophonist who was my teacher in jazz improvisation discussed this issue with me as I asked him and he gave me the most intelligent answer I ever heard before or after. He said with a smile, "until you find out the best way to practice, practice anyway!"

How effective can a practice session be?

My humble opinion after much practicing and playing guitar and piano and other instruments and also teaching piano and guitar is that you have to take many things into consideration like the time available, your motivation level, how concentrated you can expect yourself to be and more.

As real growth often is a slow gradual process you will not very often be able to measure the effectiveness of a practice session by how much you have learnt so you have to find other ways to find out if you are effective.

Can you practice too much or too effectively?

It depends on how we define effective practice sessions. If effective guitar practice is to work through a long list of things to improve in your playing and to practice ten hours a day without interruption I guess you can practice too effectively.

This will mean that you practice in such a way that you will get fed up with guitar playing and maybe you will even hurt your muscles and develop an aversion towards guitar playing for the rest of your life.

What is real effectiveness when you practice on your guitar?

Real effectiveness is better measured by how well your practicing methods and results are pointing towards you goals. Without goals you cannot measure effectiveness. The roads to Anywhere are many so to find out if you are on the right road you have to decide your destination.

If your goal is to have fun with your guitar then you have a very effective practicing session if you have fun with your guitar. If that is what you want then it is a worthy goal. I guess you could come upp with more specific goals with deadlines so you can measure them better. But it is up to you to decide your own goals, otherwise the goals will not be effective.

I hope these words on practicing guitar playing will give you some comfort and also help you realizing that when human beings like you and me are involved we cannot definitely say how we ought to play to be effective.

Human beings are funny things that sometimes behave like as if they were identical, but nevertheless they are unique. This also applies to guitar players like you and me. We are different in many ways but I guess we want our guitar playing to contribute to our happiness and joy so have fun and..."until you find out the best way to practice, practice anyway!"!

Clarinet players: Should I start the clarinet?

I am 15, and have been playing the piano since I was five. I now am in the advanced level of piano and have been picking up some other instruments as well. A couple years ago I taught myself how to play the guitar. Last year I tried the violin. I had a teacher for my first couple months of learning violin, but then we couldn't afford it anymore. Because violin is so hard to teach myself, I have been having a hard time with it. I have been thinking of starting the clarinet. Its music is beautiful, and I thought it would be kind of fun to try a woodwind. But would I be able to teach it to myself? Is it hard to learn? Are there any free resources out there that could help me? Have any suggestions of where to buy one?

Clarinet has a very beautiful sound and I would say one of the easiest instruments to play. It is very easy to play and you could probably learn by yourself, but just in case, if you are in High School, I would sign up for band ( as a class) and your band director could help learn a little bit better, all free of charge! There are definately free resources you can use, especially youtube, which can give you lessons in the videos there! You can buy a clarinet from your local musical instrument store. If that doesn't work, just go online (amazon is ok) and find one that best suits you. I hope this helped! :)

Parochial and private schools are educational institutions operated by religious or private groups which are funded in whole or in part by the students' tuition in contrast to public schools which are administered and financed by the local, state or national government. However, some parochial schools are also subsidized by government funds depending on the country or the institutions' affiliations. Private schools, on the other hand, are independent institutions that have their own programs and requirements in selecting students. However, they still follow the rules and regulations appropriated to them by the Department of Education.

Parochial schools in the United States were, in the past, non-public. In fact, Catholic elementary schools were often attached to local parish churches. But nowadays, parochial schools are no longer just Catholic parochial schools but also refer to schools operated by different religions. These include Protestant, Jewish and Muslim, among many others. Parochial schools are independently established and operated by a religious institution and run by lay trustees or the members of the religious order. These institutions may or may not operate under public school standards depending on the differences of laws which differ from state to state. Parochial schools include religious education into their curriculum that aim to teach students their beliefs, doctrines, rituals, customs, rites, and personal roles.

Private schools are independent schools which are not run by the local, state or national government. They have the right to choose their students and to design their own curriculum. They are funded in whole or in part by their students' tuition but can also be subsidized by a private company or institution. The tuition fee varies from school to school and whether the private school is boarding or day. Boarding schools in general are more expensive due to the board and lodging fees that are included with the tuition. The tuition also depends on the location of the school, the willingness of parents to pay, peer tuitions, and if the school is subsidized by another institution.

Parochial schools are subcategorized under private schools since they are privately financed and are also funded by the students' tuition fees. Both parochial and private schools design their own curriculum and regulations but often comply with the Department of Education's regulations related to the educational content of classes. Parochial schools often just add religious instruction to the curriculum provided in public schools while private schools can include special classes such as those related to languages, arts, and sciences among others. Both, however, provide better classroom conditions such as smaller number of students per class, low student to teacher ratio and facilities such as libraries, science laboratories, and computers, among many others.

What do you think?

Some school curriculums around the world stress on the idea that the sciences, specifically, should be "analytical oriented" when taught. In other words, they concentrate on teaching students how to solve scientific problems analytically and logically rather than making the students memorize facts and information about scientific concepts, theories, and scientists. However, other school curriculums aim for the latter. They think that making a student memorize scientific concepts, theories, and scientists would enable the student to understand and grasp problem-solving skills and analysis at university better. So what do you think? Do you think that the sciences at schools should be analytical oriented or memory oriented? Please, explain why.
N.B: When I refer to schools, I mean High Schools where the sciences are chemistry, physics, and biology.

I think it should definitely be analytical. By the time people have finished their high school career, they'll have forgotten most of what they've memorized. But understanding can't be forgotten. That's the path to life time knowledge.
In today's world, there's no need for rote memorization. Need to know the molecular weight of an element? It's on the internet. Avogodro's number? Internet. Or in a book, that, if you're doing these problems, is probably somewhere near you.
Even not just looking at the modern world, analytical skills have always been more prized in the science world than memorized knowledge. My chemistry teacher has told us time and time again how he never had to memorize the periodic table - Not in high school, not in college, not while getting his master's. He knows a lot of it because he's used it on a near daily-basis for decades, but never had any of his professors or teachers provided a single student to memorize it. Another, albeit also anecdotal, example, my father is a retired engineer for P&G. When he retired he brought home a lot of his books. They list nearly every mathematical and scientific constant you could ever need! All the formulas, the meanings of symbols. And my father is not a young man. Memorization has never been that prized in the industry. Scientists and mathematicians have always been provided with the formulas, with the constants. What showed you were capable was your ability to apply them.

Great question by the way. And great to see a person who (maybe?) knows some Latin, with the NB for Nota Bene.
