Philosophy Of Mind Consciousness

Philosophy Of Mind Consciousness Philosophy Of Mind Consciousness

Would you like to really get a handle on the subject of philosophy? I mean really get to know the subject, the famous names, and the root of their thoughts? If so, let me recommend an excellent audio series to you, one that is so good, you'll want to keep it on your bookshelf when you complete your listening to it:

"The Great Ideas of Philosophy (Second Edition)" of the Great Courses 0f Philosophy and Intellectual History by Professor Daniel N. Robinson Ph.D. Oxford; The Teaching Company Limited Partnership Audio Series; Chantilly, VA; 2004. ISBN: 1-56585-981-2.

This is a five part series, and it is 60 lessons The lectures are roughly 30 hours of lectures and it comes on thirty CD ROMS. It is extremely comprehensive and moves very fast, and it must be listened to in complete silence, with full attention and probably best listened to in the dark. If not, if any distraction you will not be able to follow along. This series is one of the best I've found from the Teaching Company.

Robinson does a superb job on this; he is also the author or editor of some 40 books. You will be blown away by this course. I would also submit to you that since he moves very quickly, you will get an excellent over view of the subject of philosophy and the history or philosophy, along with all the famous names.

If you are a pre-college student, I'd suggest that you buy this series and listen to it twice or three times prior to taking your philosophy classes. I'd also recommend it to anyone who wants to brush up on the subject moving from a community college into a 4-year college if you are going to study philosophy. If you are retired and just wish to exercise your mind, yes, well this will definitely do that for you as well.

Why don't they teach meditation in philosophy classes?

I studied various philosophical theories of consciousness extensively in college, but it wasn't until I took a Buddhist meditation workshop several years later that I actually paused to observe how my own mind/body/unconscious really shapes my perceptions and experiences.

It is entirely a mistake to say that meditation is necessarily spritual, but in philosophy we are not by and large concerned with helping individuals 'discover themselves'.

It is also fundamentally incorrect to say that meditation is an Eastern practice, absent from Western philosophy (and from philosophy classes in general).

For one example, imagine setting out to discover a solid foundation for knowledge by attempting to maintain a constant attitude of doubt toward the reality of everything you 'know' to be 'true'.

That seems to me to be a pretty meditative procedure, and it should be familiar to anyone who's studied any Descartes (which will mean just about all first year philosophy students. Unfortunately you all remember the slogan "I think therefore I am", and forget that this was part of a much broader project!)

economics help fiscal policy

economics help fiscal policy economics help fiscal policy

I've found in life that just about anything the government has a hand in, is bound to get screwed up. I've seen people freaking out that the unemployment rate has gone up to 5.7%. Yet when Bill Clinton was president 5.5% was considered full employment and in June it was at 5.5%.

I guess the big question is what changed, what caused the jump?

One thing that changed was an increase in minimum wage. Minimum wage went up 70 cents.

When the government steps in and decides how we should run our businesses, we as business owners have to make changes to adjust to their stupid laws.

If I was an employee I'd much rather become an asset to my employer and get paid on my own merits rather than the government forcing my boss to pay me more. Of course the above problems belong to the US and I have to say that I love the US government. They help in alimenting my competition by passing law after law that hinder the ability of website owners to compete in an open market. Of course the funny part is the number of American people that want to pass even more laws that would hinder American business even more.

For example, a couple years ago a group of web designers wanted the government to step in and regulate the web design business. Set up a minimum requirement that a web design business must meet in order to sell websites. While they think this would be a way to eliminate competition, I saw it as a way to eliminate them. Had the government done that, the business owner would have to increase his cost to pay for the school and other regulations that the government would have imposed. Since I'm not in the US I would have not been affected and my prices would have stayed the same. Making it much easier to take their customers from them and increase my monthly income.

Now, don't get me wrong, I've got stupid laws here in Colombia I have to work around. And those laws, that were made to help the employee, have a direct negative impact on almost every employee I hire.

Let me explain.

Here in Colombia, the government in all their wisdom passed a law that said any employee that works for you for more than 3 months gets a tone of benefits along with bunches of money if they decide to quit or I decide to fire them. My past employees took total advantage of this law, some even quitting once the money built up. Then my accountant told me that the government fires everyone they hire, every three months and hire back the employees from the previous three months.

Now I do the same.

The people that got hurt where the people the law was made to protect. Had the government stayed out of it, my employees and many others would have a steady income year round but with the exception of a few that is not the case.

The reason for the rise in unemployment is because the government decided to step in and help out those people, whom on their own are unable to make more than the minimum wage. If these employees deiced to become an asset instead of a minimum wage earner, they'd have nothing to worry about. And if the government stopped trying to help them, they'd still have a job.

Can you help me with Economics?

I cannot find the answer anywhere - online, in my book, in my notes... nowhere! It's actually part of a question (one question... 7 questions WITHIN the question):

What is cyclical asymmetry? Discuss how Monetary Policy suffers from this ailment.

I have WHAT cyclical asymmetry is but I can't really find how monetary policy "suffers" from it. Everything I see says fiscal policy causes it more.

Cyclical asymmetry means that while a tight monetary policy will work to stop inflation it does not mean that an easy monetary policy will not always stimulate the economy to stop a recession.
At the end of chapter: http://www.oswego.edu/~spizman/eco200ch15.html

This one (best):

http://www3.shastacollege.edu/aeckhardt/powerpoint/BUAD%2015/BUAD%2015%20pdf/Chap%2016.pdf

On page 34 says: "Cyclical asymmetryis the potential problem of monetary policy successfully controlling inflation during the expansionary phase of the business cycle but failing to expand spending and real GDP during the recessionary phase of the cycle."

I am thinking that im gonna talk to my counselor in my school for some further intructions. I need suggestions or anyn advices. Thank you sooo much!!

Yes, you will need an F1 (student visa) to study in the United States but first you must apply and be ccepted into an accredited U.S. learning instition.

The best advise would be to apply to a community college in the U.S. and complete your GED. This is deemed the equivilent of a high-school diploma and is accepted by colleges and universities as one.

general educational development ged test

One of the challenges of getting a GED is paying for classes, study materials or the test. And many students can't afford the cost of childcare or transportation to attend classes. Or, some adult students simply can't go to classes on a regular basis because of family and job responsibilities.

There are solutions. Though resources for adult learners vary, no-cost or low-cost classes and study materials for self-guided programs are readily available in most communities. There's also help available online for GED students working on their General Education Development credential.

Here's a guide to help you find resources:

1. Your Public Library may have many of the study guides and GED lesson plans available for loan, and may also have videos and CD ROM GED testing study courses as well. In some communities, the library even sponsors free GED classes.

2. Most Community Colleges offer free or affordable GED courses or classes in basic skills, which will apply to a GED study program. The cost of these GED courses will vary from area to area, but generally they're not expensive. If classes are fee-based, check with the community college Financial Aid Office. You may be eligible for free classes.

3. In many communities, even childcare costs and transportation are available for GED students. Talk to local GED instructors; check with the community college Student Support Services.

4. Community-based nonprofit Family Support Agencies or Family Resource Centers are excellent sources for GED students. Contact your local agency and ask about classes, materials and other needs related to your educational goal such as childcare, transportation or adult education classes or grants. You may even qualify for a grant that allows you to study at home, on your own schedule.

5. Your local Public School District or University may have continuing education courses or adult education courses. There's often grant money available to school districts that sponsor programs and classes for adult learners. Give them a call to see if they have the material you require for the GED test. You'll probably want to check with the Central Office of the public school district, the nearest High School and with the Adult Education Office or Career Services office at the university.

6. Don't forget about the local branch of your State Unemployment Office and local Department of Social Services. Both of these agencies may have funds or resources available through programs related to job training, workforce development, job readiness or a DSS family support or welfare-to-work program.

7. If you're employed, your workplace is an excellent resource for adult education. Your employer may already sponsor a program, or be willing to sponsor your GED program and costs since your goal is just as significant to your employer as it is to you. Check with your employer or supervisor directly, along with the Workforce Development, Personnel or Human Resources officer or department. You may find you need to ask a variety of people in the workplace to find the answer you need.

8. Your local PBS television station broadcasts GED courses that you can take. PBS also offers some online courses for basic skills required for the GED test. They're free.

9. PassGED was created to provide free support and low-cost help for GED Test candidates. Lots of free information, test advice and study guides are available, along with financial aid for an online GED program. You'll also find a learning community of GED students and instructors at the online Message Forum who may have additional advice about free or low-cost GED materials. The website address is http://www.passGED.com.

10. You may also want to check with the American Council on Education, the national administrative agency for the GED. The ACE provides information about testing, official test sites, GED scores and transcripts. To locate your official state test site and administrator, a complete listing is available at http://www.passged.com/test_state.php.

GED Tests - If you pass, do you get a high school diploma?

is that what ged tests are for? on wikipedia, it says "General Educational Development (or GED) tests are a group of five subject tests which (when passed) certifies that the taker has American or Canadian high school-level academic skills."
It only certifies that the taker has the academic levels or can you also get a high school diploma?

It will depend on your state - I know at least one gives you a diploma if you pass the GED. But most don't consider the GED quite equal to a diploma, so you have a GED instead of a diploma.
