Teaching Kids To Care
Healthful eating habits are usually formed long before kids start to select their own foods. Little ones adopt the eating habits of their parents. Parents and child care providers are the first role models that children encounter.
Little ones are awesome observers. When kids see what is going on in the kitchen, they can make a complete dialogue with their invisible friend on how to fry french fries or make a salad.
In several studies involving the eating patterns of kids, researchers found that their eating habits, including preferences for certain foods was traced back to the patterns and preferences of their parents.
As kids go from from bottles to bacon, they start developing eating habits that follow them throughout their lives. Healthful eating habits that are started at a very early age will follow them through adulthood.
Since it is documented that eating healthy can prevent serious illness, it is important that role models start giving a carrot stick or an apple for a fun treat rather than a sugar filled treat. Little ones eat what they see grown-ups eating.
Parents do not notice the major influence that they have over what their kids learn to eat. Following the eating habits of children, research has shown that the attitudes about food are almost as genetic as the color of their eyes. This fact puts a lot of stress on parents.
But understanding the far reaching implications of this study will result in healthier little ones and healthier parents.
Caregivers can relate to the fact that they relate both positive and negative memories with food. When kids are involved in fun activities, they tend to be snacking on junk food. The food offered at the park is all about hotdogs, ice cream and high sugar goodies.
The smell of Grandma's cookies baking in the oven might bring back feelings of love and security. While the smell of vegetables cooking might invoke a negative memory of having to clean the plate of vegetables before getting dessert.
Bribing a kid to eat nutritiously is a short term strategy that will almost always backfire. "These contingency strategies are effective in the short run; they elicit the correct response, says Dr. Fisher, Ph.D, assistant profession of Pediatrics at Baylor College of medicine. In a study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Dr Fisher made a direct link to the eating patterns of children and their parents.
Dr. Fisher and her researchers made some fascinating discoveries surrounding the eating habits of kids. The little ones of parents who consumed lots of fruits and vegetables in turn had kids who also consumed the same kinds of foods. Alternatively, parents who only encouraged healthy eating but led an unhealthy eating lifestyle, had kids who consumed low intakes of fruits and vegetables.
Little ones will appreciate and react to the power of influence. Because nutritious eating habits are as important for parents as it for the children, the commitment to eating healthier will be easy.
The moral of the study is that if you want your kids to follow healthy eating habits, the general rule is you must set an example - don't just tell them.

it's hard - good parenting does not come natural to many. We want to be gentle and fair, but it's hard to do that and still create structure. It's something that needs a lot of effort.
Thankfully there are great resources like Gordon Neufeld's book Hold On To Your Kids - give it a read!
Hang out with families who have great kids - their parenting will rub off on you in a good way, and your kids won't pick up nasty habits.

If you are a homeschool family, then you have probably invested a great deal of time and energy into your children. You have given much thought to the idea of their education and the curricula that you plan to use to further their intellectual growth. What have you done however, to prepare them for their social growth? Now, to many homeschooling families that question will seem out of place, but hear me out. I don't mean social growth in the sense of friends and parties to attend, but social in the sense of community awareness, adult interaction with others, and preparation to exist independently once they leave your homeschool program.
Homeschool families need to incorporate a valuable tool into their educational curricula beyond the books and core subjects. Homeschoolers have the unique opportunity to ask the question, "What would my child need to be able to do if something happened to me?" Asking that question will allow you to identify some of the additional areas in which you can be training and preparing your children while still at home.
Depending upon the age of your children, various skills can be incorporated into a homeschool program from an early age. These would include basic chores such as dishwashing, laundry, and bathroom clean up. As your child grows, homeschooling families can actually allow their children to be more involved in such things as preparing food, planning meals, managing a checking account and budget to include savings and long-term planning, and perhaps even participating in a family business. The more practical your homeschool education can be, while striving for excellence in the academic arena, the more abundant your child's training and preparation will be.
The idea that teenagers would not be contributing to the social life of the family was not around until the 20th century. Up until that time, and well into it, children of all ages were expected to contribute to the well-being and functionality of the home. They gained valuable skills in independence, purpose, social awareness, and cooperative effort through this practice. Somewhere in the late 1900's, however, this practice began to disappear and as a result, we have left teenagers far too unprepared to function as adults because we have extended their childhood for too long. They leave home unprepared for college or careers and end up in a financial or personal mess, or both.
If you desire to raise an independent, thriving, purposeful, and socially responsible adult, then you will need to begin to involve them in skills that lead to this from an early age. They will not learn these skills through osmosis. Imagine what they will need to be able to do, manage, or handle on their own without you, and then let them "practice" that while you are still there to be their safety net.
Independence and social responsibility are not ingrained into our children's character. These skills must be taught. Take advantage of the time and intentional learning opportunities afforded you as homeschoolers and see how their academic and social skills will thrive.

Home School/Alternative Education - Where do adults start?
Hi. My husband and I are interested in delivering an alternative
education to our future children and would like to try homeschooling
them.
We would like to do "group" homeschooling with other like minded parents 1-3 times each week is this possible?
Do we have to follow a specific curriculum or just make sure that the end results (grades) of each school semester/year are satisfactory and, how are kids independantly graded/marked - I mean, what is stopping parents from giving their kids all a's?
What do you think about this- start training kids on how to answer SAT type questions at a very young age (grade 4?) so by the time they need to take the test they are masters?
Do parents get tutors for homeschooled kids or do all of the work themselves?

There are many homeschool groups that are out there to offer support, and several of them do have "group" classes. I guess the best way for you to get started is to look at the state laws regarding homeschooling. Each state differs in its requirements, but you should be able to obtain access to the laws pretty quickly. Try internet searching your state and homeschool law, and you should find a site very quickly detailing the requirements.
Generally, you have to be evaluated by an independent teacher each year in most states and report to the school district in order to make sure your child's grades are up to snuff. There isn't a specific curriculum you have to follow, but there are many out there. From what you have said, a curriculum such as A Beka may be a good match for you, as they are generally pretty tough and will turn your child into a well rounded individual. You can get tutors for your children, but a large majority of individuals do most of the work themselves. That is a matter of personal preference. And starting your children out at an early age on SAT type questions is good. You can never be too prepared, and it does help. Good luck in your endeavors!

The Aquarius Sports Resort Hotel in Marawila, a sleepy western coastal town of Sri Lanka is always a fascinating place to me.
The beach-end restaurant of the resort facing the scenic Indian Ocean will become at times a forum for various international issues.
I had a good discussion with Marita Kantar at the beach-end restaurant of the Aquarius Hotel. The sun had started to go further and further towards the deep-end of the Indian Ocean's horizon. The evening sunlight shone on Marita's face as she was seated facing the ocean directly and I asked her whether she would like to seat opposite the ocean at the rectangular table. She smiled and opted to stay where she was enjoying the glorious sunset in the Indian Ocean.
While I was talking to her on various issues, I asked her how she felt about the massacre of Jews by Adolf Hitler. She said, "They are only the victims for a person who was mad and power-hungry." She further continued, "He managed to brain-wash many for his unjustified cruelty on Jews and others in the Germany and neighbouring nations." She burst out at one point by saying that the act of one lunatic had the effect of giving a bad image of them.
I placated her saying the act of one megalomaniac does not necessarily tarnish all Germans. I told her not only in Germany even in other countries by the act of some of the reckless leaders, their nation and people have become untouchables or villains for other communities and nationalities.
In our recent past, we have seen many like them. Saddam Hussein in Iraq for his marginalization of Kurds and Shi'ite Muslims and some of the leaders from then Yugoslavia for their violation of Bosnian Muslims and Croatians are too the perpetrators of crimes against humanity in their own way. Some of the culprits had been prosecuted by the International Criminal Court for War-Crimes, but others escaped. Still there are many war criminals around the world at large.
I told her, "These culprits are either hiding or not punished yet or still the law is not strong enough or its enforcement is too weak".
As Marita was a Diploma student and doing her field of studies in managing social science, I asked about the unification of Germany which created a lot of unemployment problems in Germany and some Germans in the former West German part are uncomfortable about it. I knew as she is from the former East German part, she might feel uncomfortable at my question. Her eyes had gone really blurred over my question and answered with a sobbing emotion, "the Germans won't like them to be seen as East Germans and West Germans."
She further went on that she had been all over the Germany and saw minor changes in their dialects and couldn't identify any major differences.
What she said is correct. Even East Germany is only a creation after the Second World War when the major allied forces divided Germany into two parts. East Germany had been left out with the communist USSR and their puppet East German administration. But when the cold war came to an end and the demise of the Berlin wall in 1989, the new united Germany had made East Germany part of the existing federal system in other parts of the Germany as a new territory. The capital of the new unified Germany was shifted from the then West German capital Bonn to the then East German capital Berlin.
