Obviously, if you have children and you wish to move to Spain, then the schooling of your children will be your most important priority.

In fact, the overall welfare of your children will probably be the deciding factor as to whether any move to Spain is actually possible and their educational needs may define where you live. Certainly it is true to say that the happiness of your children in Spain will be critical to the success of your relocation. If children are unhappy then this can place tremendous stress upon the adults within a family - to the point at which it can strain a previously good working relationship.

Fortunately, education in Spain is good, albeit that (like the UK) considerable care is required if you are to obtain the best possible results. Of course, the big difference in Spain for a child is that they will be taught in Spanish (and sometimes in a regional dialect, such as Valenciano). As few North European children speak Spanish, it makes their entry into the Spanish schools system sensitive and it can mean that it takes a while for your child to settle. That said, it is extraordinary how fast children pick up a new language and I have only ever known one child unable to learn Spanish.

Of course, timing has a huge part to play when it comes to placing a child into normal (not international) Spanish schools. Without doubt, the younger a child the easier it is for them to assimilate Spanish and to therefore get to grips with education in Spain and the academic work itself. A far greater problem is faced by older children and experience has shown that there is an age at which children find it, to all intents and purposes, impossible to both learn a new language and deal with the demands of increasingly complicated academic work. In essence, the danger time for moving a child into Spanish schools (if they speak no Spanish) is when they are around 12 - 13 years old. Earlier than that and most children will easily learn the language and be able to catch up with the academic work. Older, and it will become difficult (to impossible), for them to keep up with their peers - and not to be able to do so will be demoralising and damaging during a vulnerable time of their lives.

Education in Spain for children is compulsory from the ages of 6 to 16, with primary education lasting 6 years - followed by four years of compulsory secondary education at the end of which a Certificate of Education is received. State Spanish schools are free and normally school uniform is not worn. However, the purchase of school books is the responsibility of parents and can be quite costly (around 300 Euros per child per year). After the age of 16, children can continue with their education in Spain and go to vocational institutes or study for the academically demanding (and highly regarded) Bachillerato. The latter takes two years and is needed should a child wish to attend university.

State schools tend to be as variable as in the UK and much depends upon the precise intake area. It is therefore always wise to check very carefully the reputation of what may become your local Spanish school. Of course, there are private Spanish schools which can often be a very wise choice. These can provide a superb education in Spain within environments that are controlled, safe and that have high aspirations for their students. They provide terrific value for money compared to the cost of their UK (for example) counterparts and, if you can afford it, are well worth using for your children. Fees (2008) vary considerably but can be around 350 euros per month (10 months).

Equally, Spain has a scattering of international schools which provide, in English, a British curriculum. Oddly enough, these Spanish schools frequently have a high proportion of Spanish children, as the wealthy Spanish have a strong urge to ensure that their children are completely fluent in Spanish. They are particularly pertinant if you wish to move to Spain and your children are over the age of 12. As a parent with two children, I have been very impressed by the standard of education in Spain - and my son now is attending university having passed the Bachillerato. This has been a tremendous success (he started Spanish schooling when he was 13) and proof that the existing system of education in Spain works for foreigners!

Help with Sociology homework......?

I am doing a paper in Sociology and I have to talk about a current event in the world and it has to relate to the conflict perspective theory. Conflict theory interprets society as a struggle for power between groups engaging in conflict for limited resources. I want to do global warming for this, but I don;t know if it ties in? I was thinking that some groups of people are for it and some are. I'm just wanting to know if I can use global warming for this theory?

Yes, global warming would be a good idea. You could use Al Gore (who is the foremost advocate for going green) for the pro-green side, and you could use Oil Companies for the other. Oil companies are very quick to refute the idea that they are to blame for global warming or that global warming even exists.

The future of higher education in the UK is destined to look quite different in comparison to how it does today. As education online gradually follows the footsteps of the USA and grows in popularity with full and part-time UK students, others are seeking to establish an open content higher education service that might eventually result in a high quality University of Europe. So what can we learn from the education system of Finland?

The reason for this short analysis of the Finnish education system came in the form of an article concerning Nokia in The Dallas Morning News today (February 9th). It seems that the mobile phone giant has established a headquarters at Espoo, not far from Helsinki, in an clever attempt to benefit from a higher education system that is, "skewed toward getting a master's degree...It gives us conceptually strong students with a wealth of theory, specialization and a capacity to learn - the one real gem that this system gives better than any other I have seen." (Heikki Norta.)

In fact, the Finnish education system has long been noted for the incredible proficiency of its students. In 2004, the BBC reported of the publication of findings by the Programme for International Student Assessment; Finland came top for overall mathematics proficiency, as well as achieving the best mean reading and science scores - ahead of Korea, Hong-Kong, and the Netherlands.

One of the key differences with Finnish education is the fact that after primary education, students are then allowed to focus on traditionally separate vocational (Trade School) or academic studies (Upper Secondary School). After students complete their secondary schooling, those from tertiary education are expected to enter the workplace, whilst those following the academic route are essentially taught in preparation for the certainty of higher or tertiary education.

Unlike the UK and USA, the Finnish education system causes the majority of its students to enroll in courses in quite different subjects such as engineering, computer science, and maths, whereas here and stateside, English, Graphics, and Media thrive pushing students to an already-saturated workplace. Simply, Finnish student are preparing themselves for jobs that are yet to be available. Conclusively, the success of a system such as this means that an open content University of Europe scenario will only be a good thing for the UK, presuming that the fins want to get involved.

There are many types of books. The key point when deciding what types of books to choose is: Introduce children to a variety of books. In this way, we widen their horizons. Here are some book types to consider.

Story books

When most dads think of reading aloud, they think of story books. These come in many types including folk tales, fairy tales, series about one character, adventures, mysteries, scary stories, and tales of growing up.

What about comic books? Don't say no to comics without looking at some. Many people who today are excellent readers, as well as some famous writers, started off reading comics. What is good about comics? The pictures help children understand the words, the exciting plots motivate children to want to know what comes next and the fact that most comics come in series, such as Spiderman, gives children much more to read after they finish one comic book. Wan Inn's son Julian took a big step toward learning French by reading the French version of the Astrix comic book series.

Yes, there are some junk comics, full of violence and other types of content may not want children to be reading. However, many other types of books (not to mention movies and television programs) contain the same type of content. At the same time, many educational texts can be found in comic book form.

Also, just because a book has drawings does not necessarily mean the book is easy to read. Comic books and other illustrated book can be for older children and adults. For example, the main character in Kayla & the Magical Tree is a pre-teen, and the book's themes are probably beyond the comprehension of younger children.

Wordless picture books

Who says that a book needs words? Babies, toddlers, and even older children can enjoy books with only pictures or just a few words. Talk about the pictures. Make up your own stories. Also, many picture books are made of child-proof materials, such as heavy cardboard, that little hands can't tear. Plastic picture kids books are great for reading in the bath!

Dr. George Jacobs, Ph.D., is the author of many books (including "The Read Aloud Guide", textbooks for teachers and students, curriculum guides, and children's storybooks).

Help with concentration/ Diff types of studying?

I need to learn Chemistry out of a book because I am moving out of the country and the curriculum is different. I can't seem to do it. I have bad concentration skills I can't just read and learn it can any one help me with different ways maybe?

Your condition is not peculiar. Many people have it. There are known causes for it and there are some known cures.
Let's start with the cures...

Concentration is like any other skill or habit. The more you practice any skill, the better it gets. The more you engage in any habit, the more deeply ingrained it becomes.

SO... One obvious cure is to make a habit of concentration. That sounds, simple (and it is, superficially) but there are some obstacles you will encounter. The most prevalent obstacle is an inability to focus for more than a few minutes. Another common obstacle is difficulty in staying awake.

Music can help!

Just listening (that is… really listening!) to a beautiful musical composition will improve your concentration skills and focus. To achieve the desired result, the music must be instrumental music because lyrics distract the mind. There are some interesting compositions that involve voices without lyrics, or lyrics in foreign languages. You could use those too, however, it is best to stay strictly with instrumental music of the Baroque era. Classical music, particularly J.S. Bach, has been shown to improve memory and concentration in children and adults. But you must truly LISTEN to it, throughout the entire piece. That's why it is best to start with short works, then gradually build up to longer more involved works.

Ideally, you could also take music lessons. Scientists have now proven that studying music changes the way human brains function. It doesn’t turn you into a genius overnight, but the broad exercise of mental capacities that music requires automatically improves all other brain functions. Music improves your brain.

Next, Habits have a lot to do with concentration. You have to pick a regular time to study and stick to it. Just as exercise programs are more successful when the exercise is at the same time every day, study habits become stronger with daily reinforcement at the same time. You need to find a time without distraction. You also must find a time when you are feeling alert anyway. Biorhythms influence this. Some people study better at night. Other people are “morning people” and will have more energy in the early hours. Either way, find the time when you get no phone calls, have no other responsibilities and have high energy.

Caffeine does not help concentration. Caffeine is a enervating compound that may help some people wake up in the morning, or help some drivers stay awake on long boring drives, but no one gets better concentration from caffeine.

The worst thing you can do is watch TV. Television is in fact one of the main causes of your condition. Modern TV programs are always in short segments. Sitcoms, drama, even documentaries are intentionally produced to provide stopping points for the insertion of commercials. It’s no wonder that modern people have a shorter attention span!

Further, broadcast producers (especially of commercials) know how to manipulate the masses. They use “fast edits” (known as “formal features”) that are specifically designed to make a subliminal impact on the consciousness. Commercials sell by repetition. They use short entertaining bursts of emotionally-provocative material to influence buying decisions. Commercials also reduce concentration by lulling the human brain into a soporific state… a state of “non-critical thought.” Commercials try to impress “front of consciousness branding” …a state of mindless acceptance where the idea or “product” becomes “real” in the mind of viewers.

The pernicious effects of this are felt throughout society. We see “news” that is “packaged” as entertainment. (Just watch Fox News for ten minutes! You’ll see!) And many times nowadays, the “product” TV sells us isn’t something we “buy” like a car or a pair of designer jeans. Many times the “product” they are pedaling is an IDEA. Almost ALL broadcast media has now adopted the “conform or perish” mentality. Everyone uses fast-edits, bright colors, flashy graphics, dehumanizing violence, shock, horror, terror, fear, …and always in short controlled bursts. Television destroys brains.

You can read more about these ideas by searching for yourself. Use these search terms:
“front of consciousness” “TV advertising gimmicks” “Blink” “Formal features” and ‘television brainwashing techniques.”

You will discover a pernicious trend in human evolution; Mass media uses brainwashing and subliminal persuasion techniques to sell products… some of those products are not things, but rather are memes, ideals and beliefs that we “buy into.” Media has an awful ability to affect public opinion. Commercial media is ruthless and unscrupulous in its application. The resultant dumbing-down and attenuation of attention spans is a mere by product.

People can debate whether or not selling is inherently evil, but one thing is clear; the fast-editing “formal features” of broadcast television directly causes diminished capacity to concentrate and reduces critical-thinking.

So… if you need to get better study habits and develop concentration…
1-) Turn off your TV. Better still throw it away or destroy it.
2-) Study when you are alert, have energy and there are no distractions.
3-) Study at the same time everyday. This inculcates a good “habit” which the body and mind become accustomed to. Your energy and mental readiness will “gear up” everyday at the same time automatically.
4-) At least listen to some good music everyday. Don’t use it as background noise. Don’t be a “consumer” of music” … be a participant! Better still, take music lessons or a music appreciation class. The rewards far outweigh the minuscule investment of time and effort.

In the meantime, you do not have to take my word for the fact that television is intentionally using formal features to “dumb-down” the populace. Research that fact for yourself. I am not a conspiracy nut and do not believe there is any single agency responsible for this alarming trend. Nor do I have a problem with honest profit.

By researching this matter for yourself, you will discover that there is a difference between good profit and evil profiteering. Greed and Power are the motives behind modern mind control. You can choose to be less of a victim by arming yourself with knowledge.
