A good education relies mostly on one thing: a caring and knowledgeable teacher. Teacher shortages are the norm these days throughout the nation and specifically in California, the most populated state in the union. Certain subjects -- math, science and special education -- are in dire need of quality teachers. State colleges and universities are coming around to alternative teacher credentialing programs, to be sure, but there are also other credentialing options. One of these options, the Project Pipeline Teacher Credential Program, has helped fill the gap in California's classrooms.

Teachers-to-be come to Project Pipeline not to become qualified in their subject of choice but to hone the art of teaching. Most incoming teacher interns, as they're called at the Pipeline, already have real-world experience and need to get credentialed. "Teacher interns are career changers and hold advanced degrees," says Rex Fortune, executive director and founder of Project Pipeline.

The Pipeline Program allows teacher interns to become credentialed while they fill gaps in schools that need them. Interns are teaching in the classroom during the week and complete their credential requirements after school and on the weekends. "Like all alternative certification programs these candidates must meet state requirements," says Fortune. "We are not grabbing people off the street."

The program is a nonprofit and is accredited and supported by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The Pipeline focuses on preparing teachers to be high school single-subject teachers as well as special education teachers. As of the 2007 academic year, special education teacher interns make up 110 of the 312 total interns at the Pipeline. "Attracting prepared and experienced teachers is particularly difficult in special education, even for districts that do not have staffing problems in other subject areas," according to California's teaching force 2006: Key issues and Trends, from the Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning.

Interns who complete Pipeline requirements receive a teaching credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, which is recognized in all California public schools and more than 30 states that have interstate agreements to accept California teaching credentials.

Project Pipeline interns have a full-time teaching assignment, earning a full-time salary. Most participating school districts have a payment plan where monthly payroll deductions can be made to pay Pipeline tuition costs. The Pipeline Web site touts, "After 20 (30 for special education) equal monthly payments, tuition is paid in full without having to qualify for a loan or incur any interest. Books and materials are included in the cost of tuition."

The easy, timely shift of teacher interns into classrooms is what sets the Pipeline apart from other credentialing programs. Project Pipeline works with local school districts to -- in some cases -- connect qualified interns to a school. Each year the Pipeline holds a teacher recruitment fair where consortium districts come together and interview teachers prescreened by the Pipeline. However, Project Pipeline is not a job placement program; admission into the program is usually simultaneous with a successful job interview.

Project Pipeline addresses a very specific need: boosting the sparse pool of qualified teachers for local schools. But do the teacher interns stay in the teaching field? "The people in alternative certification programs tend to stay in teaching at a higher rate than traditional methods," says Fortune. "The candidates are competent in their field. They come to us to learn how to be a teacher."

Fast Fact:

Nearly half, 47 percent, of those entering teaching through alternate routes say they would not have become a teacher if an alternate route to certification had not been available, according to a survey of 2,647 respondents who entered teaching through alternative routes.

the teaching profession partly guilty of developing a yob culture by not disciplining bad behaviour in schools

I have had children in primary education for the past 22 years, whilst this does not make me a "proffessional" it does allow me to take a long term view of the outcomes of professional ideals.
My older children were punished if they were disruptive in primary school, detention, extra home work, unaceptable behaviour was discouraged and never rewarded.
Today we reward unaceptable behaviour, with treats for example in my childrens primary school, bad behaviour is treated with "graffiti art" lessons, day trips etc.
The well behaved children are not offered "graffiti art" nor do they get day trips, what type of message are the professionals sending aour children?. Be bad get rewards, be good get nothing?
Why cant badly behaved children be punished, I do not mean we beat them up, but could they not be given detention at lunch time, so they can catch up with their school work?
We can not just blaim the parents, teachers get it wrong as well.
Punish bad Behaviour, stop the yobs

Teachers are not to blame - they've been hamstrung by legislation. They cannot even exclude problem children without facing appeal after appeal, and probably losing at the end of it all.

Furthermore, it's the parent's responsibility to bring up their children; school is for education, not baby-sitting. It would help if parents would at least back up the schools, rather than almost always siding with their 'little angels', who they beleive to be incapable of all wrongdoing.

One thing can be said for sure about gadget lovers, they're always looking towards what new gadgets and technologies lie ahead. They're always in search of what's newer, thinner, sleeker, faster... and more bizarre. And, now that we're about ready to bring 2008 to a close, manufacturers are beginning to unveil some of the cool gadgetry we can look forward to seeing in 2009.

T-Mobile, Motorola, Using Android OS On Mobile Phones

More advanced gadget lovers who thrive on virtual social interaction will appreciate the new Android Operating System that has been adopted by T-Mobile earlier this year. And, now it looks as though Motorola may incorporate it into their mobile phones in the upcoming year, as well.

According to an excerpt from BusinessWeek, the idea behind Motorola evolving to the new Google-backed operating system, is to make their phones part of a new class of smartphones, which enable users to access social networks like Facebook and MySpace.

Napkin PC

It is said that many a great idea was born on a napkin. So Industrial Designer, Avery Holleman, developed the Napkin PC. The Napkin PC is a cool concept that uses a base station - disguised as a napkin holder - with seven different stylus pens that allows multiple users to scribble their ideas down on individual "napkins" that ultimately interface with the base station.

It's definitely an idea that has got creative types and businessmen thinking "outside the box". The concept allows users to not have to limit their creativity to in front of a PC screen. The "napkins" employ full color e-paper and multi-touch technology.

The napkins can hold the image drawn on it indefinitely, or until it's cleared off by the user. Which means you can hang it up, or share it with your coworkers at your next meeting. The Napkin PC took first place Judge's Award and Chairman's Award in NextGen's PC Design Competition.

Nokia Aeon

The Nokia Aeon cell phone is still in the research and development phase of its life, but gadget junkies the world over are already "wowing" over the full touch screen. Nokia is keeping all other details under wraps due to competitive pressure.

B-Membrane Computer

We may not see the B-Membrane concept computer for some time, but it's certainly worth mentioning just in case. The B-Membrane computer is a unique take on a laptop/desktop computer.

Korean designer Won-Seok Lee created his B-Membrane computer to look like no other. Indeed, it is about the size of a large round platter, and boasts an omni-directional projector, rather than a monitor. A keyboard appears on the membrane of the computer's surface when needed.

When not being used as a computer, Lee's design can be used to create a relaxing ambience using a variety of light effects through its projector.

Microsoft Arc Mouse

The Microsoft Arc Mouse is a handy little device that serves as both a desktop mouse and a laptop mouse, depending upon if you have it extended to its full length or folded. The mouse uses Microsoft's BlueTrack Laser Technology, and has a wireless range of up to 30 feet. It offers four customizable buttons, Tilt Wheel Technology, and comes in red or black.

This is a neat, money-saving concept. You can purchase this from Microsoft for $59.95.

Asus EEE Notebook With Touch Screen

The Asus EEE notebook computer is truly an awesome gadget for the college student, or business traveler who just needs to access basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. You know, it's rather like an electronic notebook of sorts. Its small profile is not much bigger than a regular book, and can easily slip inside your purse or briefcase. But what's really cool about this gadget, is the manufacturer offers a touch screen option with this computer. While it does come with a stylus, many users find that they're perfectly comfortable simply using their fingers to move pages and open programs.

Asus has also released a more powerful desktop version of their EEE computer with touch screen capabilities.Check out the Asus EEE PC now.

Schwinn Electric Tailwind Bicycle

In these tough economic times, when everyone is searching for cheaper ways to commute, comes the Schwinn Electric Tailwind Bicycle expected to hit the market in early 2009.While it certainly resembles a traditional bicycle, the Schwinn Electric Tailwind, dubbed e-bike, packs a lot more punch. Essentially, Schwinn joined forces with Toshiba to create a hybrid bicycle.

Schwinn uses a Toshiba Super Charge lithium-ion phosphate battery to help propel this bike down the road, giving you the option of pedaling yourself, or offering you adjustable pedal assistance if needed.Toshiba's battery charges in just 30 minutes, and can be recharged about 3000 times before it needs to be replaced. The battery slips discretely in the luggage rack, and off you go.

Visit Schwinn Tailwind to take a look at this really cool set of wheels. You'll be able to get yours for about $3,200.

Test Tube Hamburger

And, while this next item is not actually a gadget you can put your hands on, it seems that it may be something you'll be able to sink your teeth into in the upcoming year.Back in 2006, stories were circulating about test tube hamburger. Yep... scientists believed that they could make enough fake meat from one stem cell to feed a million people for one year. Their goal was to have it on people's tables by 2009.

People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and fellow vegetarians, of course, are thrilled with the prospect of the lives of thousands of cows being spared by this in vitro beef. In fact, PETA is said to have offered a $1 million reward to the first scientist to produce and market in vitro meat.

While it may sound questionable to some, the in vitro beef expected in 2009 is said to look, smell, and taste just like the real thing. Real, on the hoof, beefeaters may be skeptical, but meat created like this might give vegetarians a reason to say "where's the beef?"

adult education theories versus motivation

So, you've been thinking about advancing your education so that you can gain that extra earning power that college graduates enjoy. It is well known that college graduates have a lower risk of unemployment, enjoy better job quality, are more likely to be in high-level positions and have much greater promotion prospects because of their advanced level of education. Perhaps you already have your bachelors and want to get your masters so that you are ready for greater opportunities that come your way. No matter what degree level you want to pursue, you can do it all from the comfort of your home through online degree programs offered by online colleges.

If you are considering studying for an online college degree, then you are not alone. Online colleges and universities are becoming very popular as more and more people are realizing the benefits of online learning. Pursuing a college degree online is an advantageous way to study as you can learn at your own pace and on your own time. But even with all the advantages of pursing an online college degree, is an online college right for you?

Pursuing an online college degree is not for everyone. You need to have the right characteristics to study for an online college degree. Some of the characteristics needed when pursuing an online college degree are:

  • Self-motivation & Self-discipline
  • Ability to prioritize
  • Ability to set your own goals
  • Good reading comprehension

Self-Motivation & Self-Discipline

You need to be highly self-motivated and self-disciplined and thus, be able to work without supervision. Since you don't have a set class times at online colleges, it will be up to you to set your own studying times. It will help if you plan out your day and carve the same specific time each day to study. Self-discipline is required so you resist the urge of other distractions in your home such as doing the laundry, washing the dishes or watching TV. Self-discipline will also help you stick to your deadlines.

Ability to Prioritize

If you are choosing to pursue an online college degree, then it is probably because you have many other commitments to juggle such as work and family. Once you have made the commitment to attend an online college, then you must keep in mind that your education is just as an important of a commitment. With that mentioned, you should possess the ability to prioritize your schedule.

Just because online college degree programs are flexible, this does not mean the courses are easy, nor does it mean you can procrastinate class assignments and projects. With the many other commitments you have, it is important to prioritize your schedule, set deadlines, and as mentioned above, stick to the deadlines you set.

Ability to Set Your Own Goals

As with getting a degree through a traditional campus college, it is easy to fall off track without clear goals. Thus it is important to set both short-term and long-term goals when you pursue an online college degree. Some online colleges allow you to get a degree at your own pace and your pace will determine whether you get your online college degree in two years or ten years. When you pursue an online college degree you should set reasonable short-term goals such as taking 6-8 units (or as much as you can take) per quarter or semester. These short-term goals will help you reach your long-term goal with ease and will show the progress you are making towards achieving your long-term goal.

Good Reading Comprehension

A good level of reading comprehension is needed as online colleges teach primarily through written material written at college level. While you may have interaction with your classmates and/or instructor, the interaction will be done primarily through e-mail, chat rooms, and message boards.

If you find it difficult to attend college courses on campus, attending an online college is a great way to earn your degree. With online colleges and universities, you now have the opportunity to advance your education without having to push aside previous commitments. Just keep these characteristics in mind and you can be successful in advancing your education by earning your college degree online.
