For ten years of giving street children free non-formal education through his pushcart classroom, teacher and social worker Efren Penaflorinda, Jr. emerged winner in the search CNN Heroes of 2009.

The guy, together with his 10,000 youth volunteers, deserves all the accolades for his exemplary endeavor of helping street children read, write and count. Also values on cleanliness, discipline and the like were part of the "curriculum".

This kind of creative way of teaching out of school youth, really had the world looked up to the emergence of initiatives coming from good-spirited people who knew the vital essence of helping least fortunate among us. In fact, Penaflorinda's clients were former gang members in slum areas where going to a formal classroom is a far-fetched idea to them due to extreme poverty.

If ( and when ) people who have more in life-- be it financial, educational or spiritual-- are going to go beyond their "comfort zone" and do the" extra mile," of course, this world would be a better place for all of us.

The world and humanity now deserves good people to do their part or share in helping everyone in making their existence bearable, their journeys meaningful and uplifting.

It is high time to show our human kindness to everyone. Be it little way of giving a lowly worker kind word, an orphan a home, a sick person medicine, and other small token of kindness, of course, the effect of all of these kind deeds would reverberate to every nook and cranny of our social environment.

Not only the rich people have the power to extend help to others, but the poor as well. A simple way of "bayanihan", caring for the jobless, single parent, etc. in your own backyard, or neighborhood... help can be given or be had.

Yes, if all are mature enough to look beyond their selfish views, and become selfless the world becomes a better place for those who have been in despicable living condition.

Just look around and see those who are in need. Do not look the other way when a beggar ambushes you for a small penny, an orphan boy begging for alms while clutching his empty stomach, etc. Have a heart by helping them find their true worth.

Opportunities to help abound around. It takes only a little courage to make a big difference to someone's life.

What colleges in Scotland offer courses in History and Learning how to Teach?

The first uni in Scotland to offer a concurrent teaching programme is Stirling University. You finish with a degree (with honours) in your subject plus a diploma in teaching in 4 years. Otherwise you can do a degree in history in most of Scotlands uni's and then do a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Strathclyde (Jordan Hill Campus), Glasgow, Paisley (Craigie Campus) or Dundee. However if you do that it takes 5 years as its 4 years for the initial degree then a year teaching on top of that.
That's only for secondary teaching, if you want to teach in a primary school you have to do the degree in history first and then do a post grad and convert (unless you do languages or environmental science in which case Stirling is your only option again)

Its a good course, you get a lot more time to do the teaching side of things as its over 4 years instead of 1 like everywhere else.

Apparently you can now go to Aberdeen as well.

The training program for physician assistants usually lasts for two years. The admission requirements for these programs differ among different institutions. Generally, most institutions require at least two years of college education and experience in the health care industry. Completing an accredited program is important so as to enable one to be eligible to obtain a license.

The PA training require students to study for such subjects as biochemistry, pathology, human anatomy, physiology, microbiology, clinical pharmacology, clinical medicine, disease prevention and medical ethics. Theoretical study aside, students are also required to undergo practical trainings. They may obtain training in areas such as family medicine, psychiatry, internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and pediatrics.

Upon graduating from the program, they are required to pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE). This certification examination is only opened to graduates of accredited PA educational programs. Those who pass this examination can then use this credential - Physician Assistant-Certified. In order to remain certified, PAs must complete 100 hours of continuing education every 2 years. In addition, they are required to pass a recertification examination every 6 years.

In the event that a PA wishes to pursue a postgraduate program, they can choose from areas such as internal medicine, rural primary care, neonatology and occupational medicine. In order to enrol in a program at this level, members of this profession must be graduates of an accredited program and be certified by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Alongside these educational requirements, physician assistants must also have the desire to serve patients to the best of their ability. Moreover, they should also have emotional stability and able to make decisions in times of emergency. Another requirement for these professionals is the willingness to engage in self education throughout the duration of the career.

The following further discuss Ekistics, as conceived by C.A. Doxiadis (1913-1975), prominent Greek architect and planner, who proposed Ekistics as a science of human settlements in 1942.

Core Concept

Doxiadis further posits that, in order to appropriately respond to the demands within an Ekistic environment, the following disciplines should be used: Economics, Sociology, Politics, Technology, and Culture. Doxiadis continually asserts that a synthesis of all these elemental influences is the motivation behind Ekistics; and that it is essentially a method of System Analysis. As such, a more effective understanding is facilitated by ably producing a system of design which directly responds to the needs of man.

Theoretical Framework

Settlements are man's response to his combined economic, social, political, technological and cultural human needs. As a result, man becomes successful with his response to this need only if he is happy and safe within the settlement that he creates for himself. It can be said that fulfilling this main criterion is the solitary essence of the whole Ekistic exercise.

Biological Essence

Doxiadis's view is that human settlements can be compared with biological essences such as a man or a tree, which have their levels of organization. The essence of hierarchy that pervades elements from nature are continually alluded to, in his magnum opus- "Ekistics- An Introduction to the Science of Human Settlements," with chapter titles such as: Ekistic Pathology, Ekistic Evolution, Ekistic Diagnosis, and Ekistic Therapy. Doxiadis underscores that human settlements are very complex and similar to (but not the same as) cells, bodies and organisms. They are similar, yet different because human settlements can neither be cells, bodies nor organisms-- and hence, can be looked at as biological individuals of a higher order because their creation involves deliberate effort. And they are built and inhabited by homo sapiens who move, act and decide their future independently.

Hexagonal Settlement Patterns

One of the main precepts given by Doxiadis is the use of hexagonal configurations in the design of human settlements. To him, gridiron (rectilinear) planning was an inappropriate response in the critical need to provide zones within a community which should adequately answer man's innumerable requisites for his body, mind and soul. He claims this to be so because six-sided systems most efficient cover a uniform and plane field, providing short distances from any designated settlement center. An efficiency which is difficult or almost impossible to duplicate when using four-sided configurations. He must have taken inspiration from hexagons in nature--such as the beehive honeycomb and the scutes of a turtle carapace--as confirmation that man could draw inspiration from nature; further affirmation that Doxiadis drew heavily from biological essences.

Sociology Project ! help I'm lost!?

I need information and facts on eduation in the United States and its correlation with a social problem regarding eduation. Does anyone know of any good websites or places to find this? Any ideas of what to discuss. I have to base it off of volunteer work I did at The Science Center and what they do to improve education.

The best place to find anything like that would be JSTOR at:

http://www.jstor.org

It is not free, but if you are doing a project, I am assuming you are either a student or with an organization that would probably have a subscription. Use your library's proxy into JSTOR for free access. Most libraries will give you access through their "content collections" or "journal collections."

Philosophy Dictionary Definition

Philosophy Dictionary Definition Philosophy Dictionary Definition

The dictionary defines success as, "sucocess (noun), the accomplishment of an aim or purpose". Buried a little deeper in the definition, is the reference to, "a person who attains profit or prosperity". At what point, did the definition of "success" become so aligned with net worth? I remember a line in a movie when I was very young where an overly aggressive executive made the comment that "net worth was a way of keeping score". I can't recall the movie, but it created a lot of debate, because at the time, it was inappropriate to discuss your net worth, salary or success in business.

Much later, in the 1987 movie "Wall Street", the character Gordon Gekko created the infamous line, "Greed is Good!" Throughout the 80s and 90s it felt like society embraced Gordon Gekko's philosophy, and materialism reset the definition of success. We have reached a point where if someone comments that an individual is "very successful"; we assume it means they are very wealthy. We never ask what they are successful at, because we assume the reference is to wealth. The only question is, "how did they make their fortune?"

It was not always this way. There was a time when you could be a successful artist, athlete, mentor, volunteer, parent, teacher and yes, businessman. I have recently posted a number of articles discussing the changing corporate world and after a great deal of discussion, I believe one of the key factors driving this change is our new definition of success. When the singular focus of our careers is to attain prosperity, everything else becomes a distraction. Activities that don't add to our net worth are considered a waste of time, and the "ends justify the means" seems to be a daily rationalization.

Many people will argue that this is not a recent phenomenon and that business has always been a cutthroat environment. This may be true, however today it seems to permeate the entire family. It feels to me that our advertising and marketing efforts have unfortunately succeeded, and we are all more materialistic and consumer focused than a generation or two ago.

Regardless of whether this is a new phenomenon, I am interested in how our definition of success has affected our corporate cultures. When I look back on the companies I have worked for and think about the cultures, I see dramatic differences. I worked for a company early in my career where the company was truly a family. I loved the people I worked with and appreciated the bonds, the mentorship and executive leadership. The company peaked and essentially fell off the radar over 20 years ago.

However, employees still meet every Friday the 13th at a specified location for reunions. Most people look back on that experience as one of the best in their career. On the other hand, when I think about the company where I made the most money in my career, the culture was terrible. The only reason any of us stayed was that we were paid exceptionally well. There was no moral compass within the organization and the stress levels were incredibly high. There are no reunions and no one would attend if they were organized.

There was a time when success meant more than the bottom line. It meant building teams of highly motivated people. Individuals were proud to work for the company because it was an energizing environment. The board of directors, the executive leadership team, middle management and every employee in the company understood that we were part of a family, and that the people were the most important asset.

This was not a slogan, but a true belief. Companies focused on training their employees and nurturing skill sets. Organizations offered back to the community, not as a public relations ploy, but because they knew it was the right thing to do. Companies did everything they could do to avoid layoffs, rather than using it as a tool to increase profits.

Do we really have the right definition of "success", or is there a definition that is more accurate - and in the long run, will be more effective at driving world-class companies? Can profitability be a byproduct of companies being "successful" at creating a positive culture of growth, support, integrity and respect?

What is justice?

My philosophy class is going to have a discussion on what is Justice tomorrow, and I want to have something to say.

Besides the dictionary defintion, what is your definition of justice?

Justice to culture is socialized revenge. Individuals use the 'state' to exact repayment for an event the individual perceives as an offense.
The mystical idea of justice is that everybody will somehow get what is deemed fair and equal by the individual.
Nature does not work in this manner. Justice is an imagined cultural idea.
