Sociology Core Concepts

Although, Enlightenment principles are rooted in a large part of the world there is much to be learned about its value and importance. Each person needs to embrace enlightenment as their personal life goal. Thus, approaching new experiences with an open mind allows you to engage more meaningfully in each moment.
Western philosophy, sociology and cultural teachings began including enlightenment in the eighteenth century and beyond to describe a more harmonious way of life. Thus, reason was advocated as the primary source and legitimacy for authority. It is commonly believed by historians that the signatories of the American Declaration of Independence, the United States Bill of Rights, the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizens, and the Polish Lithuanian Constitution were guided by 'Enlightenment' principles.
Your attitude (open mindedness and enlightenment) determines your level of participation and connection in your experiences. Thus, choosing to let go of preconceived notions and opening your mind to explore new aspects of every experience helps you to create and sense more awareness in each moment. Not only will an open mind help you to be more in tune with your life experiences, you will open yourself to a wide range of new ideas, that will ultimately enrich your life.
When you apply an open-minded focus to include all your experiences, you can create a greater sense of meaning in every moment. This total focus on enlightenment can be conducive to harmonious conversations, and an opportunity to open your mind to explore other topics that you might usually hold strong opinions or beliefs about.
One of the best ways to open up to explore enlightenment is to consciously put aside your preconceived notions and see each situation with a new perspective. When you approach each concept with an intention to learn more about it, you will naturally open your mind to new ideas and create a stronger sense of interest in every experience. If you have difficulty releasing old ways of thinking, you might find it helpful to visualize your mind opening like the petals of a flower - choose your favorite flower - each petal pushing away old layers of indoctrination and conditioning. Like the petals of your favorite flower, you can open to the light and bask in the glow of new information and enlightenment.

What is a good research topic pertaining to Sociology/Anthropology?
Looking for something to do for my final project. Anything pertaining to the course. We use the books by Lisa J. McIntyre, "The Practical Skeptic: Core Concepts in Sociology" and "The Practical Skeptic: Readings in Sociology," both are 4th ed.
! First, as this text, and I guess your lecturer, encourages you to:
- look beyond the surface; to be suspicious of what “everybody” knows. To think analytically
- look and understand how social institutions work, and how power is used in
organizations and how social inequality comes about (and its impact on people),
- write about complex issues.
the author is following the rules set out by C W Mills in his influential text 'The Sociological Imagination'
and, as C W Mills himself examined in detail 'The Power Elite' (ie the interwoven interests of the leaders of the military, corporate, and political elements of society of his own time, the 1950s/60s) you might be interested in the ways that contemporary sociologists** have broadened his definition to look in detail at the way that, in the last two decades, the 'Crime Control Corporations' have become key players in this group of intersecting elites who control, not only the material resources, but the culture and way of life of Western societies today.
Alternatively take Mills advice and
1. ask what personal problems do I and my firends have?* Then
2. begin to explore what are the broader social issues and social strucutres that created these problems and
3. how, historically have these individual problems and broader issues been constructed
4. what processes of change are they undergoing now?.
* unemployment/housing/ work and family balance/concern with environment/global health issues eg swine flu/asylum seekers and migration and population policies/the combination of sufficient food but inadequate distributions systems so that one in five USA children , and 49 million across the world, are underfed/or, paradoxically, obesity
