With so many disabled people searching the internet to find love and friendship, several mainstream dating sites have also begun including a dating for the disabled service on their sites. This service attracts users with disabilities who are looking for an able bodied companion, who understands their situation. Equally, it helps non-disabled users who are already registered on the site to widen their search for a compatible partner by including those who may happen to be living with an impairment.

By giving users an option to experience dating a disabled person, the service itself also benefits. If this option is utilised by enough members the service attracts advertisers from the disability market and is able to capitalise on profits. Specialised sites have a wider base of users who understand what it is like to live with a disability. They take into consideration the challenges their subscribers face in order to use the internet and many sites are designed to make it easier for disabled users to access them. Allowing changes to text size to suit members with visual impairments and dyslexia and having spoken text labels attached to pictures are some of the measures employed. Accommodating technology in this way underlines the sensitivity of the specialised dating sites.

Today many mainstream dating sites offer dating facilities for disabled people. But experts continue to view the services with suspicion. They feel that these sites may have a hidden agenda (like profit, for example) and so may not be completely devoted to finding dating solutions for the disabled. They advise disabled singles to choose specialist dating websites rather than opt for general mainstream dating websites. The reasoning being that with the plethora of dating sites on offer, why not choose one that focuses exclusively on your special needs. This is especially so when one is not searching for that special someone and is simply looking to be a part of an active online community that understands disability.

Primary Education Games

In a previous article I gave a fun Scripture activity to help your preschoolers learn the truth of Psalm 139:14 which says, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I know that full well!" Here is another activity that goes along nicely with this verse. It's called "Who Did God Make Swell?" Try playing it with your children to help them learn that God didn't make any mistakes when He created each one of us. (By the way, the Bible says that God looks at our hearts. Let's help our children both young and old realize that even a person with a disability was carefully made by God's loving hands. His children are precious in His sight!)

Who Did God Make Swell?

For this activity, you will need to take pictures of your children - the bigger the better. Cut them into four pieces. Place the pieces of each picture in its own envelope. You are now ready to play the game.

Read Psalm 139:14 to your children. Talk about how wonderful God made each of them. You might try and point our something special about each child. Now say that you have some envelopes that contain pictures of every child in the class. Ask a child to come forward and pick an envelope. Take one of the pieces out and lay it on a table for all the children to see. Ask, "I wonder who this is?" Let the children make a guess. After each guess add another piece to the picture until the full face is revealed. End each unveiling with the words, "I think God made (Joshua) just swell!" "Now let's say our memory verse together. Have the children recite the verse then have someone pick a new envelope and repeat the activity.

The NRI community in the Gulf has promoted medical tourism to India for orthopedic surgery. People of Indian & Asian origin in Gulf countries like Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, feel safe in the hands of Indian Doctors, although Free health is available in Government hospitals.

Staffing

Doctors, nurses, para-medical staff of Indian origin constitute the care providers in many of this ministry of health hospitals. Private hospitals also have the same pattern of employment; However para medical staff from Far East countries like the Phillipines is more common. The ministry hospitals are fairly well equipped for delivering reasonable care in emergencies like road traffic accidents.

Elective orthopedic surgery

Indians find this hard to get at an affordable cost. The number of Outpatient days for expatriates is very much less in relation to the demands of the proportion of the population. This may be one day in a five day week. Where there is no fixed outpatient day/clinic for Indians, they have to wait for long hours to see the doctor. Ministry Waiting lists for visiting orthopedic surgeons from Europe or USA totally excludes expatriates. In some countries, the ministries of health hospitals have started charging Indians for deliveries and it will be not long before they are charged for other elective surgery as well. The health budget has no provision for the advanced orthopedic treatment of expatriates.This is reflected in the numbers of patients from countries like UAE and Oman visiting Chennai for medical tourism.

Having worked in this region, I have come across non uniform levels of care being provided to the locals versus expatriates in ministry hospitals. This is but natural. Many Indians are forced to put up with this maltreatment as the cost of private treatment is exorbitant. Health insurance provides a cushion for the affluent. However not all can afford it.

Is Orthopaedic treatment in India of excellent standards?

This is for you to judge. Indian doctors have excellent qualifications and skills like their counterparts in the UK, Australia and US. A recent article in "INDIA TODAY" quoted that Indian hospitals and doctors have become the health care destination for foreigners.

Is it cost effective?

When you can get world class orthopedic surgery in Chennai at half the cost as in the West, or even in the Gulf, then it is certainly cost effective. For e.g.: A total knee replacement in some of the private hospitals in the Gulf costs about 50,000 UAE Dirhams (17 000 US$). The same treatment can be provided in India for half or three fourths of the cost. An ACL reconstruction can be done in Chennai for 60-70,000 rupees as opposed to $ 3500 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Philosophy Purity Made Simple

Five plus years ago, my elderly father came to live with me. My father was not only elderly but was attached to an oxygen machine and so his quality of life where entertainment was concerned was limited to doctors visits and television. Little did I know, at the time, my father was an HSN, QVC and Infomercial fanatic and to hear him say, many times, "I know a good deal when I see one" was something I got used to hearing as first this gadget, and then another, started appearing on the kitchen counter. In telling my six other sisters about his "gadget-ism" they were concerned about his budget as he lived well but his money was fixed by social security income.

As was my usual way, I would open the box and then find some way to use the gadget while he sat at the kitchen table watching my face and reaction to the newly acquired gadget. Most of the gadgets were for the kitchen...you know the kind: the spaghetti pot with built-in drainer, the eggs extractor, the slice and dicer. I didn't need these gadgets but never told my father that and always expressed a heartfelt thank you.

I'm a cook. I love cooking, and in my opinion, a cook has to have two things in the kitchen: a good set of pots and pans and a really good set of knives. I take great pride in my Henckels and my six sisters, who are also cooks, take great pride in their knives as well which range from Chicago Cutlery to J. A. Henckels. Because my father taught us that every job needs the right tool to be done well and because we have no brothers, that philosophy translated into having the right knife in the kitchen. I always believed that the more expensive the knife the better the knife, the longer life of the knife, the sharper you could sharpen it. I'm sure there are others out there who would agree with that idea. How wrong that idea proved to be and I'm not sure if it was a commercial, or HSN, QVC or the Ron Popeil Infomercial that proved me wrong. I'll never forget that day.

On the kitchen counter, opened and spread out was a delivery of knives and a couple of gadgets the variety and like I've never seen. My first thought was "Oh no, I've got my Henckels and here my father bought these stupid, cheap knives and I'm going to want to use them "only" because it makes my father happy." I picked up a few of them and slid the paperboard covers off, commented and then in my usual manner started dinner but this time instead of pulling out my friend Henckel, I used a Six Star+ Cutlery knife.

To make a long story short, the Henckels are used but now only occasionally. There are times when you cannot judge a book by its cover and Ron Popeil's Six Star+ Cutlery is a prime example of not judging. These knives are the best I've ever used and I'll take a Six Star over any Henkel any time. Sharp and staying sharp is extraordinary - those paperboard sleeves are there for a reason - I did remove them and after I cut my finger just going into the drawer to retrieve one I put them all back on. The variety of knives included in the 25-piece set makes for having just the right knife for the job. I don't sell for Ron Popeil even though they have an affiliate program off their web site. I'm just a new fan and never again will I giggle at Mr. Popeil should I be awake in the wee hours of the morning watching television. My father paid $39.99 for the set and in the words of my father: "I know a good deal when I see one."
